Great review, always love the shots of the driver pulsating. I remember once on Interstellar I had my normal two SVS subs as well as the Starke and I had a hard time breathing during some scenes it was so intense. That's when I knew it was too much for that room.
The bass in Interstellar is so insane, especially during the launch sequence. During the launch you can hear the ship rattling and wanting to come apart, and the bass makes it feel like the same thing is happening to the walls and windows in the house!
Good review. Would be great if you mentioned both other comparable or better subs in that price range, as well as sub as good that cost less. Thanks for the review.
Thanks Shane for this sub review!!! I know you weren’t feeling well but this is greatly appreciated. Not many people do sub reviews but you are certainly the best at it!
M & K, was the very first sub I purchased, in the 80’s. This was long before the term “Home Theater,” was even a thing. I remember being a bit underwhelmed, as it just didn’t deliver the punch that I was expecting. I guess it had everything to do with the fact that, I had zero clue as to what I was doing. 😊 Imalso picked up a new Yamaha receiver with DSP, which seemed to mean something different back then, as it was hey, this sounds like a theater, this sounds like a stadium, etc. Good times!
Shane, another great video! These seem to be the precursor to the Perlisten subs. How do they stack up again them? The prices is much lower, almost by half! Also, when you do the voice-overs for these videos, do you shoot the video acting first or record the voice-over then act out the actions? Curious, you do a great job of that actiong and timing is always spot on. Thanks for sharing.
Shane, did you ever measure the bass response between the 4K of Edge of Tomorrow and the bluray. The 4K Atmos mix seems to have cut the Ultrasonic that is on the bluray DTS-HD track. There is still a low rumble on the 4K, just not the ultra low rumble. Just wondering if you measured to verify.
Very beautiful subwoofer. Probably performs as good as it looks. Price wise there are much better options that will perform about the same at a much lower price. They won't look as nice.
@Shane What dimensions for your room and where do you sit in the room? I'm very interested in the in room response you had and your remarks around the room modes you have. Also I'm making subs just now so have interest in the sub itself!
The amount of “yeah, but…” comments on most of Shane’s videos that usually involve names like JTR, Rythmik, PSA, and some others is just nauseating. No, your direct to consumer brands (who have no dealers in the field to help actually service any customers btw) aren’t the messiahs you think they are. In fact on the contrary I’d say their lack of dealer support is a net negative to the industry. The more dealers that close their doors the less help there is for folks interested in home theater, and that diminishing customer base will hurt us all in time. Not everyone who wants a home theater is a DIYer. Which makes almost all of those brands basically useless to the majority of home theater customers. And no, they don’t sound as good as people think they do, those saying such things have not had longer term exposure to true hi-fi brands.
Great review Shane. I do have one question about placement. Why didn't you place the M&K behind your seating position like the Perlisten as you mentioned, it was the place for best sound in your theater?
Shane appreciate all you do sir!! Now who makes those killer caps you wear? I wanna know cause they are badass sir!! L8R bro!! M&K are worth it as I have placed many a system using them. Long live my Velodyne but they are legacy. Thanks!!
I’ve heard the older M&Ks subs of back in the day when they were the king of subs IMO. Have not heard any of the newer ones though. But judging from what you are saying it seems like they still got it.
Has anyone ever heard the now discontinued Monitor Audio PLW215 II ?. This subwoofer is 1400W RMS (700W RMS per driver). Just want to know how this sub will compare to the MK Sound X15+ in terms of it's performance (db output, distortion etc). Thanks
Still have a M&K V-2B sub from long ago when Ken Kessler, the K in M&K was involved and before they went out of business. The M&K of today is a different company with different people, not sure i would equate the product of today based on the original brand.
@Scruffy I hear you man. They made some badass subs back then. I worked for a guy who is a multi millionaire and he had theses subs all over his penthouse. Could have had anything but chose M&K. Says a lot.
Shane please do a top 10 favorite sub and revise it annually. I know Perlisten would take the top 3-4 spots according to your reviews😉 and also Mad VR. Love watching your channel and even picked up a few recommendations based on your reviews. I’m going to sell my Anthem AVM70 soon and the next few purchases will include dual Perlisten D215, Trinnov Alt 16, Mad VR and Kaleidescape. Thanks again for all your hard work.
The perlisten are good subs. Measure well and sound good. Problem is their price to performance ratio. Funk, jtr, dss to name a few will walk all over the perlisten sub in every category for the same or less money. You get so much more performance for your money when you can skip dealers and go straight to manufacturer
Is there any use to knowing peak power numbers on amps/drivers these days? Everyone agreed a decade+ ago that this was used more as a marketing tactic than anything useful from a performance standpoint. However, it seems most brands are still also listing the peak number for their products.
I love the M&K MX1000! I purchased the sub when it first came out in 1988! Ken told me that I was first to buy one. The frequency response is, 18-125 hz +3db. It picks up the low bass that's in the gravy that's stuck to the skillet. The MX2000 plays down to 16 hz +3db. I have also had the MX150THX and the 350THX subs. They are smaller cabinets and with different drivers. The earlier models play deeper than the ones from the late 90's. The early models had 2 dual voice coil woofers vs the single coil from the 90's. I want a sub that will sound like the earlier M&K subs but with more power. I like deep bass extension for my music over HT listening.
Nice but $6K… little steep… spec wise looks similar including amp power etc as the HSU ULS-15 MK2…. I wonder how these compare but at that price you could get 6 HSU subs haha and that undoubtedly would be better. I doubt the differences are much 1 on 1. I’ve played all those demos on my set up before and have had similar results that you described here.
@@Paranimal86 You would think so. A lot of people go with what they are told by a dealer. A dealer will push whatever puts money into their pocket. Some are easily influenced by a reviewer etc. And some have just never heard of these internet direct brands because most don’t spend a lot of money on advertising

@@pf5658 I have two Polk audio HTS12s and two Polk audio psw505. Which the psw505 I had them for awhile now. So I replaced them with the HTS12s in the 5.2.2 setup. And put the psw505s in my mancave which is the 5.2 setup. And they both kick ass. Do I plan to upgrade not really. If the amps die I will just get them replaced. And they both get super low.
