Gyamtsho and Tashi, fondly known as Lopen Gyamtsho and Lopen Tashi in 1980s, were a strong force in the genesis of Bhutanese rigsar genre. They started their collaboration in the early 80s when they would be scoutmasters during winter scout camps for students. This was where they taught their songs.
Further when they both relocated to Thimphu in the mid 1980s, they started composing more songs and would go on to record their songs. One of their first recordings was done at HRH Ashi Chuki’s residence and Her daughter HRH Ashi Sonam Wangmo was the one who recorded their first album. “Wai lhamo” was one of the tracks in that album. The songs were recorded with only an acoustic guitar. The duo’s other hits include “wai dorozam “, “gola bumtha mathra”, “Ausaphaley jomi boom”, “droba atara”, and many more which are more familiar with 80s young adults and scouts.
Gyamtsho and Tashi were the first to breakaway from traditional style and their songs were perhaps the first ones to be recorded using a guitar.
Gyamtsho and Tashi, because they were both Dzongkha teachers then, also composed nursery rhymes. Most popular ones being “chap chi chab dey” and “dumra na lu chi ngyi sum”.
Thinley Gyamtsho’s solo works include “nga gi choelu masong”, “sazambuling dina”, “aye mo”, “ya gung gi thridu Nima di”, “wai dorozam (1979)”, “dari nalu joenbi”, “Druk Yul di na gawalu”, and “nangi norbu”.
Tashi Gyeltshen composed many hits especially in the 1990s with Norling Drayang. Some of the more notable ones are “nga gi labi khabsu”, “ashi kuzu “ and many many more.
Lopen Tashi sang into the 1990s and 2000s and released many hits.
Gyamtsho didn’t actively sing after early 90s. He got relocated to Paro Teacher Training College (1993-1999) where he was HOD and started the Dzongkha teachers’ training course. Later he would become Principal of Royal Academy of Performing Arts where he continued composing songs and dances.
Please subscribe because we are bringing back all of their hits from 1980s.

    Lyrics
