GS, love these vids. Can you recommend a decent VR goggles for these sims? I bought one (can’t remember the name) but the resolution was such low quality it was unplayable/couldn’t get the position to centre inside the cockpit, just kept starting out on the wing roots or something :(
There's probably a touch of the comments that sound like we don't enjoy your modern fighter videos. This isn't true. We love those too! There's just something about WW2 planes, the sound. The visuals, the piloting that just is so satisfying and entertaining to watch. We love your work GS!
I love all your content but the WWII content is absolutely my favorite. It’s like aerial sword fighting and I love to hear those beautiful piston engines screaming as well!
Probably not going to be as interesting, in a one-on-one fight the Spitfire or Mustang would dominate the Me262. The reason why it was successful, no battle in WW2 was a real one-on-one battle. But the Schwalbe can't turn with the Spit, and the Spit can't dictate the battle, the Me262 can just disengage at will and there's no fight. And since the 262 is is a bomber interceptor and not a fighter, it's not meant for that kind of fight. The only way this can work is with a Spitfire or Mustang protecting a bomber squadron, and the Me262 attempting to shoot down the bombers without being shot down by the fighters.
The fight would just last half an hour, and it would consist of the 262 flying straight for minutes on end just to build enough extension for a single joust, which the spit will dodge, after which the same pattern repeats :/
Thanks for another WW2 video! Yeah we love these because they're so close and personal. I don't know a lot about modern air combat, but it just feels like there's more things out of control, like how well the enemy defends against a missile, while with WW2, you can see the enemy and what he's doing, and react to that, not have a missile do the work.
Love seeing all diff gens of warfare but the WWII fights are def more immersive for the viewer. Something about hearing the propellers and glancing around instead of using the instruments just puts us in the fight a bit more. Great vid.
The K4 came with a standard armament of 1x30mm cannon and 2x13mm machineguns, all in the nose (which eliminated the need for worrying about convergence zones). It could optionally be fitted with underwing gun or rocket pods, but those were universally LOATHED by the pilots because it took away the aircraft's maneuverability.
@@daszieher No. The 30mm was standard, shooting through the prop spinner (aka the "motorkanone"), but a lot had to be fitted with 20mm because of supply problems. You know, because of the whole "Combined Bomber Offensive" thing.
@kristianfischer9814 yes, we are speaking about the Motorkanone Mk 108 firing through the hub (and between the cylinder banks). I had just been under the (erroneous) impression, that - much like in the G-6, G-10 and G-14 - the base version came with a 20mm MG-151/20 and had an upgraded U4 version with the 108.
Still aching to see an F-15EX loaded down with AIM-174s! Given the sheer ordnance weight the Strike Eagles can load up and fly with, it would seem to be a match made in heaven.
You are one of those few content creators that i watch on a regular basis since i found your channel a year ago, even though i dont play flight sims myself. WWII content is nice, but even nicer are the story driven videos. Keep ´em coming, good stuff.
There is never enough videos of ww2 out there , whether its from a history channel or from GS . We can never underestimate what these boys went through to allow the freedoms we have today . Just unreal the sacrifices they made .
I enjoy all your dogfight videos, but I *especially* enjoy the authentic WW2 dogfights the most, because I can actually visualise that this was actually what those brave young pilots experienced on a regular basis. Almost every manoeuvre you or your opponents pull has probably been done many time all those decades ago, so it seem more real and life like than the imaginary dogfights between modern jet fighters. That is the extra appeal to me.
So glad you're doing WW2 again where we can see skill and airmanship instead of button pushing. Echoing the other comments here. Lining up on their tail is why I've been a subscriber for a couple years.
Really loving the WW2 era plane videos. Not sure if you can but I'd love to see a Hawker Hurricane video if possible. As much as I love the Spitfire, the hurricane was very under rated and was the workhorse of the RAF.
love the modern stuff, but ww2 planes are just special. my granddad lived in the Hague in ww2. he was 9 years old at the time, and he told me many times that you could feel the allied bombers and planes before you could hear them. and then they all went in the basement just to be sure, and laughed because they knew the germens where gonna get it.
To be fair, though, K -Model 109s were extremely rare along the channel coast in 1944. "Air Supremacy" was the first time that term was used, in history during that time and in that theatre. The Allied Air Forces could range wherever they wanted with little risk and the Luftwaffe only left their airfields under peril.
Well, I guess count me in with the fans of the WWII aircraft facing off. Didn't know the 109 was faster than the Spit, but was aware that the 109 doesn't want to get in a 2 circle, turn rate fight against a Spitfire. However I have always thought the Messerschmitt could take a Spit one circle...🤷 Great video dude 👍✌️😎
The 109K isn't going to turn with a Spit one way or the other. The Spit's turn rate AND radius are going to be superior (the K-4 added a lot of weight without increasing wing area to compensate). The K-4 really needs to use its speed advantage and rely on energy tactics pin the Spit down. Also, he's flying a 1944 109 against a 1942 Spit. The K-4's contemporary would have been the Mk.XIV, and that would RADICALLY change the equation.
It would be cool to see a modern fighter vs a swarm of various WW2 fighters airframes with good pilots using coordinated ambush tactics. Betting the modern fighter will have to gun and run to not be overwhelmed
Here’s the math: Spit - better turn rate, two 20mm cannon with very good ballistics, 4 machine guns or 2 machine guns (depending on year/variant). 109K - more power, one 30mm cannon but with mediocre ballistics, 2 machine guns.
Hey GS, seems like others are as happy as I am that you came back to WW2 stuff. There's so much potential in that era, with air to ground, dogfights and some naval action maybe, oh, by the way, whatever happened to pacific theater maps and aircraft carriers from that period, they were supposed to come at some point?
Nice work man, apart from all the spitfire kills! Boo, jokes. Thanks for the WW2 content, love it when you're in VR. Jump into some WW1? Thanks again, keep it up.
I like the WW2 and Vietnam-era dogfighting because that's when dogfighting was still a necessary part of fighting between planes. With modern aircraft, a dogfight is either entirely fabricated, or a result of one or more likely both pilots royally screwing up. I'd hate to have been a pilot back then though because I absolutely cannot pick out silhouettes, so I'd either be downing friendlies or else waiting until I got *way* too close to a bandit before firing.
Weird question for you GS…can modern fighter radar principles be used to better defeat police radar? I noticed I went past and officer who was turning around and when his radar targeted me I was traveling almost exactly 90 degrees to his direction. 90+ in a 65 and he didn’t get me-did I accidentally beam his radar?
I have to wonder, with all the combat flying you do, do you have those nightmares where you’re being chased but no matter how hard you urge, your plane just won’t go any faster. Maybe you’re in a WW1 biplane and, OMG! you’ve got a 109 on your tale. (Please don’t blame me if you bale out of bed tonight screaming.)
Here's a silly idea, AWACS mission. I have no idea what that actually means but what if you were the awacs for blue side vectoring your allies onto target. While they are trying to smoke you out. Kinda like the other side of the f22 early warning Radar mission from a few days ago.
I really appreciate how much you consider viewer interest, GS. I expect you began uploading videos because you enjoyed DCS, and your channel has only grown with your skills, video quality, and consistent production. While I enjoy all your content, I agree with your thoughts about WWII content at 8:02. But there’s also the added skill required for deflection shooting with the slower rate of fire guns that require you to hold your time on target longer. And when it comes to WWII vs. modern air combat, there’s also this - 7:54. *No jet can compete with that sound!* 😁
I am a private pilot and would love to get into dcs. I fly a Pitts aerobatic biplane and building a sopwith camel ww1 replica from the airdrome company. I have flown a t6 Harvard trainer. It is incredible thinking about these pilots in ww1 and 2. Flying the aircraft would have been a dream but flying them into these situations would have been less than ideal
Not sure which version of the Spitfire this is, but it's definitely a Merlin engine. It looks like a Mk 9, and if so is a couple of years older than the K-4 version of the Me109. It would be interesting to see a similar contemporary of the K-4, like the Spit Mk 14 - if there is one in the DCS inventory...
