    2. China is having one of the worst flooding years
    3. 3 reasons that may cause the Three-Gorges Dam collapse
    4. Why flooding is so bad in China?

I saw a video by a dam engineer who said Three Gorges construction was unique. Usually damns are built in horizontal layers, built up upon each other, from one end to the other, 10-20 feet at a time. Three Gorges was built vertically, where they built an array of monolithic towers, from bottom to top, then filled in between the towers. He didn’t explicitly say that was a problem, but that it was an unusual, non-standard choice.

The CCP knew even in the planning stages that the Dam was a bad idea. So many Chinese experts wrote dissenting reports (let alone the numerous overseas experts), giving predictions of the terrible cost on the environment and people of building the Dam in that location.
Predictions of a steep rise in regularity and frequency of extreme environment events such as torrential rains, droughts, temperature fluctuations, earthquakes, landslides, floods, diseases and illnesses, land destabilisation, sinkholes/subsidence issues/etc, fauna and flora destruction/issues, river/coastal erosion, etc. I mean, they built the stupid thing on a *known seismic fault*. WTAF.
They were suppressed in one way or another. The CCP knew and didn't care, they could can-kick any problems. And they likely will continue to not care until it hits the top eschelon's wallets and homes.

@@trailwalkerhk0125 Not very intelligent if the dam isn't properly engineered for longevity, appropriately sited, engineered for safety and well-built and maintained is it? That includes all risk management and planning. Chinese willpower is considerable and impressive but it cannot compensate for these essential facts.
The Chinese historically have a wise and impressive culture but the refusal to seriously consider risks, nor admit to mistakes is what is bringing the entire regime down. I happen to care about the ordinary people of China and am very concerned for them and the rest of the world environmentally and economically, because the challenges are immense. Good luck with it, but don't pretend you don't have serious problems because we aren't stupid, either.
""Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."
      - Ernest Hemingway from the famous novel For Whom the Bell tolls.
Hemingway uses it as a metaphor for the Spanish Civil War, implying that people in America or other countries should care about what was happening there, and not ignore it because it was happening far away. We could say the same about the people of China, living in the shadow of these dams, and in the wake of the crises that are besetting China.
      We care.

      - With stimulus and measures, China's debt will be at 400% to 500% of its GDP in the next decade, according to Reuters.
-Chinese 🇨🇳 property Ponzi sector, which accounts for 30% of GDP, is crashing
-Tofu Exports and Western imports, accounting for 37% GDP, are down.
-Foreign investment is falling over 90% compared to it's peak in 2018.
-Foreign visitors are down 96% compared to the pre-pandemic level in 2019 with less than 200 americans left.
      -Consumer prices are experiencing hyperstagdeflation.
-Youth unemployment hits over 21% (in reality 50%+ after eliminating faked numbers), a record.
-It's fast shrinking workforce is 10 years old than neighboring countries.
      - During the years 1990-2021, the US printed 6.5 time more money while China printed 147 times.
      - It has printed more money than the US and Japan combined, while it's economy is only half of them.
      - Current Chinese debt-to-gdp is already highest in the world, at 300%, according to Bloomberg.
      - This is a macroeconomic nightmare created by the party going way back in 1994 when they took the Tofu money off the international exchange. Now in 2024, the banks and the average little pink have no idea what is the ACTUAL value of anything within the country. Any stimulus from the Central state. will be meaningless and ineffectual because the Central Bank is a part of the Party. Thereby merging both fiscal Central and monetary private policies into one ongoing disaster. Local province officials were doing stimulus spending for decades in tandem of the "Economic Miracle" which will undermine any Central stimulus during an actual depression/recession or more accurately.. HYPERSTAGDEFLATIONARY NIGHTMARE.
-- in the future house prices will drop to 10%, youth unemployment will be over 70%+ without streams, and middle class people over 35 will all be laid off.
How will you do in a country where real estate companies, local governments, and banks across China have crashed or fled? That is your challenge for the future (will you own a trash house with the mortgage?). Pensions will be laundered and your daily pay will be 1-2 dollars while you drink Poop Water and eat gasoline cooking oil while the Party and Porkpooh eat Tegong Special food supplies.

Just seeing what happened in the past, when smaller dams in the US broke apart... like outside LA, it is indescribably horrific- the thought of 3 gorges collapsing is mind blowing. I hadnt realized this was such a big concern, but it makes TOTAL sense. Plus, I know that anything large built in China can easily break down, especially without top notch upkeep, & I have little hope that any signs of damage would be heeded; as the structure will likely show signs if its integrity were compromised... I obvs worry red flags would be overlooked or played down. The whole flooding problem is insane.

For a long time, various YT channels have been claiming it would collapse. It is a terrifying thought, and I am so relieved it has not happened. But I compulsively have to check all thumbnails claiming it will collapse. I can't imagine how they can make the dam safer, other than somehow tearing it down slowly. 😢

Well, I’ve been looking at a number of analysis of the construction of the dam, the fact that secrecy surrounded it during construction, that there are earthquakes in the region, that there are substantial cracks constantly being plugged, that untrained migrant workers finished off the task in ‘record time’ and that currently the water behind the dam has been at unsafe levels for three weeks, I’m feeling that time is almost up on the dam.

It was. The problem of such a large dam structure is that it is not a permanent fixture, and amassing that much water also affects weather cycles, which was one of the widespread problems, and it's also why there's stronger weather that lasts for longer periods.
These dams are not designed to hold the weight of a full/occupied dam, they are a temporary structure to support the weight in temporary measure. Usually for hydroelectric consumption or weather/temporary seasonal effects.
If they were designed to hold water for longer periods, the venting / output points would have multiple ingress/egress points for spill events, and you would have multiple gates to separate the flow into pipes, pumped around hydro, gas/refineries, or nuclear stations, data storage centers that require cooling, and other heavy-water consuming equipment that isn't used by utilities. Which you do see in other places where ships are able to cross a multi-gate elevation to lift/sink cargo boats and shipping lanes.
Tied to this, they put all water conservation under military secrets, which is obscure, but it also explains why they no longer give warnings to flood releases, as these releases would cause flooding risk to downstream dams and reservoirs, and form the basis of claims for losses.
Which is likely why the chinese government and SOEs that manage these dams, no longer announce dam release, or why it's often scheduled for midnight during rain storms, so that there are no emergency vehicles and no preparation in place, to make it seem like a natural disaster.

    I had 2 comments;
    1. Lei not understanding that she comes across as abit whimsical is funny, but expected. I think covering such a serious but unknown (to the viewer) topic lends itself to this, as the viewers surprise at the dysfunction of modern China tends to translate into humor. Not a complaint, just an observation, and please don't change, I rather like this aspect. 😁
    2. The three gorges dam could be taken down by military action, albeit with difficulty. It would take either a great deal of conventional or a small amount of nuclear ordnance to accomplish a catastrophic breach. Compare this with the Aswan high dam in Egypt, which is basically an artificial mountain damming the river, with a few tunnels around it for water release. If I had to build the three gorges I would have built it like the one at Aswan as it would have been extremely difficult to breach it in a way leading to catastrophe.

As someone, who was dealing with rremote-sensing data, I can say that the deformation of the 3GD seen on satellite imagery may be real or may also be just an optical phenomenon. Secondly, your export is absolutely right: leakage is a much bigger problem and usually underestimated, when because it does not look dramatic. Usually laymen-engineers will try to inject concrete into the failed zone, which seems logical but makes the problem much worse, because it destabilizes the bedrock. Remember the failure of that iron-ore sludge lake in South-Amerika (Chile?), a few years ago?

When I first heard of plans for the project, I thought it was the "Three Gorgeous Dams."

They have had years to fix the dam so it is hard to get people to care.
Years ago they could had dig next to the dam making a new dam-- they did nothing.
What they have built cities no one lived in but they can't fix a dam that so many people could be harmed?

In 2020 the dam authority did admit that the dam did have "slight deformations" after a record flooding.

I still remember Saudi Arabia thinking that China could turn the Saudi desert back into a green forest and the only thing on site they managed to do was spray paint some rocks green and the ground and remember how the Saudi Bunch claim that they was going to make the Miles City the 100 km long City funny it only turned into 2 mi

Lei did you read about: The Three Gorges Dam is so massive in scale that it has slowed down the earth's rotation and maybe the expansion of universe. Who knows maybe some advanced Aliens from another distant planet can detect that. It is fascinating how powerfull Dragon can be. But the Dragon veins are much older than dams and they are more respected. Dalai Lama meditated this and he concluded that our planet will burn. Until that we should enjoy and love eachother not suffer like making wars...

I think most likely scenario is landslides into the reservoir. That would drastically increase the water lever immediately.

Yeah those photos are showing distortion due to composite image of multiple satellite shots. There could be real distortion of the dam but not shaped like that. If it truly deformed to that degree the dam would have already failed.

Sad that the poor people downstream are just not safe. Especially now in this bad season. We have no idea how that feels. If you say 1/2 of the nation is effected by the floods it will also effect the whole world. Very sad 😢

Could you explain the reasoning behind releasing waters at night?

    • @Akiss
      @Akiss 2 месяца назад +10

Because if they publicly release the water, the govt is liable for damages. Secretly releasing the water at night they can blame the flooding as being natural and avoid compensating for flood damage.

There's a lot of water that needs to be released. There might not be enough hours during the day. Flow rate is a function of two factors, volume and time.

The picture shown at 19:40 is a photo artifact of "stitching several pictures together. Not only the dam has "wobbles" in its outline but other features next to the dam that are independent structures. For sure the dam is a worry when so much construction in china is Tofu built.

I doubt the government lets too many concerns of the dam spread enough for the people who are working hard to make ends meet (the vast majority) to even be concerned about moving in the first place.

I never understood why the decision was taken to build a single Three Gorges dam rather than a system of smaller dams. If you look at theYangtse river on a map, you can see that by having a dam te engineeres violated one of the most important principles of engineering: to avoid creation of a single point of failure that is the Three Gorges Dam. Had they built a system of smaller dams the destruction to the ecology would have been minimized, SPOF avoided, time provided to coordinating opening spillways/sliuice gates on those dams to minimize damage. Also many of the artifacts of the Chinese culture and history need not have been lost for ever. It never pays to threaten the environment to satisfy human ego. I pray SPOF never materializes

After commenting on this video I couldn't find it again; it wasn't listed under your channel.
It may be just a RUclips glitch. Anyway I googled grumpy Pooh bear and immediately found one with a frown. It's a soft toy from Japan.
