Teaching kids to write a sentence can be daunting. In kindergarten, introducing the idea of making sure you have a noun and verb can go right over their heads. So instead, teach them to have a "complete thought". Even though emphasizing having a full line of words can still result in a fragment, if gives a jumping off point to say "well what was the puppy doing?" or "who was running?"... "finish the thought". Instruction on sentences for kids should include: starting with a capital letter, finger spacing, a complete thought, and ending punctuation (period, question mark, or exclamation mark). This is a good launching off point for kindergarten sentences, or first grade sentences/1st grade sentences. Focusing on "grammar for kids" can be a little academic - focus on parts of speech usually is most appropriate in first grade. Obviously if the child is ready to digest it, go ahead and teach it.
