  • This was a great lesson with Cavin and Javon showing a lot of progress. We started with sticking exercises and went over how to read the sticking patterns again. I wrote it down in each of their sheets. Then, we went through the page of basic 4/4 drum beats. These were 1 measure (a bar) of 4 beats for the drum kit.
While having them read the measures out to me using the reference page, I played what the bar was supposed to sound like. I gave them freedom to go at a comfortable tempo for themselves, then, let them try to go through the entire page until failure. If they failed, they switched out. Since they were able to make it through the entire page without messing up too bad, I let them have a minute of freestyle play where they could try to play whatever they felt like, but it had to be an actual rhythm. I think it was our most fun lesson yet.
