My trees are in the woods and the squirrels get them before I can. They leave me the wormy ones!

Yeah, I've talking about this in my acorn videos. The woods just isn't a good place for nut foraging!

Same here...I leave mine for the wildlife, so they come back and maybe someday (when I need it, they will feed me)?

Growing up, we had a hickory nut tree in our yard. My 3 sisters and I used hammers and little metal picks to crack and dig out the nut meat.
Arduous and painstaking efforts produced only small amounts of edible nuts, but the flavor so well worth it.
Years later, we still recall it was the most regrettable aspect when we had to move away and leave that tree behind.

At around 2 min 50 sec that was a osage orange by your knee, those are good to put under your house to reduce spiders population in your home. Supposedly.

But why would you want that? Spiders are almost always harmless to us and they eat insects that are not. They eat bed bugs, they are our friends.

I noticed that, too. I've also heard that advice about osage oranges and spiders. But I've heard more people say that they've tried that in their home and the spiders didn't care one bit. So, maybe it depends on what spiders a person has. Or the mood the spiders are in. Or something. 🤷‍♀️
Ps. I'm with the first commenter that I prefer to have spiders around. I just look them in the eye and ask if they're black widows or brown recluse. If not, I wish them well to carry on eating the other critters. I especially like spider eating spiders like wolf spiders. I do live in black widow and brown recluse territory. I would prefer that a wolf spider cross paths with them before I or my cats or my dog do.

It looks like the older ones tend to break up as you rake them. I assume that can help uncover still edible nuts.

Just bring a bike and bike under the tree without a helmet to make it rain nuts. They grow along recreational trails all over Toronto and I hate those f...... trees.

You're way too late for hickory. They stopped falling in boston a week ago. Raking destroys the tree's soil structure. Lay down a tarp. Harvest during the season.

Raking with a plastic rake less than a 1/4 inch down does not destroy the soil. The entirety of human knowledge in the palm of your hands, and people still talk out of their asses.

This method does not have a time window.

lightly raking above the soil will not disrupt the tree

I have a hickory tree in my back yard. It’s very big and has been trimmed up beyond reach. It must produce a thousand nuts a year. The only thing I get from it is cracked nut shells and bad nuts. The squirrels feast out of reach all month on them.
