    Has to be 2008-2010. The writer’s strike really impacted television

      Yeah definitely affected TV much worse than film!

    2008 was one of the worst years for Television yet Breaking Bad still managed to be one of the greatest written shows during that era.

    2020-present. Watching shows was my biggest source of enjoyment (and allowed me to wind down) at the end ofd a work day. But shows are so bad now, I had to switch to RUclips, and cancel basically all of my subscriptions. imo, treating shows like political platforms ruined the entire industry. I hope to God it recovers.

    In a way, TV is having another 70s Jaws moment. In many areas, independent content is far superior now. For instance, I like true crime, history, space, science... nerdy stuff. TV can't hold a candle to RUclips or podcasts. There are RUclips channels and podcasters who cover that stuff in long form, and don't dumb it down. And I lap it up. (Sometimes RUclips is a bit draconian on the True Crime stuff though). The thing is, TV networks have the resources to produce to outstanding content: location filming, CGI, hiring decent actors for re-enactments etc. but they don't do it. It's all 45 minutes, a baritone narrator, a recap every 3 minutes... it's beyond banal. Which is why a history grad student with a laptop microphone and passion is far more compelling to me. It's really only drama, I think, where TV has the advantage.

    The 80's & 90's TV was a lesser art form? I may be wrong, but I think those 2 decades hold like every TV record ever. And I'm talking about real viewers choice - cultural phenomenons that haven't existed since. MASH, Happy Days, Seinfeld, Cheers, Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond, Frasier, Home Improvement, The Nanny, Fresh Prince, ... this list can go on and on. TV in the last 20 years hasn't done what those shows did previously.

      You are forgetting all the truly awful shows that were a part of those decades. Add in the '70s (Happy Days, MASH) and that's thirty years of shows. The few you list might be good, but the majority were horrible. And there were so many of them.

    Uhh, the reality tv craze kicked off with MTV's Real World in 1992.

  • @yondie491
    @yondie491 10 месяцев назад +4

    How can you blame 2001 for modern reality tv? The Real World should get at least half the blame/credit and that's 1992.
    Or, if you want to point where it changed into what it is now, that would be 1994 where Puck changed everything.
    You cover 1975 so there's no reason why you wouldn't be fully aware of TRW's impact. You talk about "remember when The History Channel was about history?" The OG version of that was "Do you remember when MTV used to play music?" What changed that? The Real World.
    If you had stuck to the "we're going to focus on recent years" and kept it to the past quarter century then... fine. 2001 and Survivor is the correct choice. But you went back 50 years so... sorry... TRW wins.
    The *POINT* about reality TV is 100% correct, just attributed to the wrong show, to be clear.
    (and 2024 is a cop out but I kinda respect it on a certain level)

    • @yondie491
      @yondie491 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@waverlyking6045 You basically confirmed my point.
      The Real World is what started the modern iteration of "reality" tv. *of course* it didn't dominate the airwaves in 1992, because that was the birth of the era, and "a few years later" was Season 3 with Pedro and Puck. It's like how "found footage" didn't dominate movies in 1999 when Blair Witch (not the first found footage film but *undeniably* the progenitor of the modern era).
      The stated metric included "influence" and The Real World was the birth of the genre, not Survivor.
      The exact wording is just after four and a half minute mark is "the most significant influence " Survivor may have been the numerical peak, but The Real World was the cause.
      Now... if you don't want to include 92/94 because the seeds of horrible tv were planted but the actual content of those years was still great... that's fine.

    Krofts Saturday morning programming alone prevents '75 from deserving to be on this list.

    Ironic how you used MCU as an example, which, today, yes, most of everything has been mediocre,
    but that 2021 lineup is still its latest best of its tv series. After that, most are awful.
