Increased cost of living has some retirees fleeing Florida

  • Florida's warm weather, beautiful beaches, and low taxes have made it a dream destination for many Americans to retire, but it is now becoming out of reach for some. Lucia Laureano has always pictured Florida as the ideal place to live out her golden years. What she didn't expect was how much it would cost. "When I got hit with the first increase, I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe it. I was shocked," Laureano said.

I live in Minnesota, a beautiful, healthy, liberal state with a great economy. Minnesota has four seasons. You have to like or at least tolerate four seasons to live here, and sometimes the winters and summers are brutal. My one-bedroom, rent-controlled apartment has a panoramic view of the Mississippi River and of my father's historic landmark office building. The public library is next door; the police department is right across the street. The rent? $345 per month. The secret? Years and years--think nearly a decade--of being on an annoying tedious waiting list and having to renew my application every twenty four months. I have friends and former co-workers who fled to Florida upon retirement and who are shocked by the recent cost of living increases in everything there. It appears to have hit suddenly and seems to be associated with the American economic collapse of 2020. Some apartments in Florida now cost more than rowhouses in downtown San Francisco. And for what? Endless heat and humidity and a sedentary, aging population. Also, Florida is a cultural wasteland, a right-wing backwater with a reactionary state government. Buying a mobile home is one of the worst "investments" you can make. First, you don't own the land and have to pay rent to park your mobile home. Second, you have buy the home. Third, the home is practically stuck in one place. You are better off renting a house or an apartment. At least you are not responsible to maintain and repair it, and you can easily move to another place to live.

I have said this to many people I know who want to move here to Florida since Hurricane Ian. And they told me that I'm too pessimistic. Now, half of them are complaining and want to move back north. The NY pension rate may not help anymore. Unless your household makes it close to $10,000 a month, even if you are in retirement, all kinds of insurance in Florida will only increase, no matter what. It doesn't matter which part of Florida you plan to live in. Even if you live in a small town in the middle of the state, the insurance will still hit you as if you lived in Orlando or Tampa. The whole state will be unlivable, even for those who make six figures in the coming year. Let alone those who live paycheck to paycheck. Even as of right now, $20 per hour barely covers individual basic needs. If you are a native Floridian and live without a mortgage, congratulations! You may have a chance to survive. For those who plan to move down here, my humble advice is to reconsider. For those who are already here, I hope you still have a place to move back to where you came from. Or consider having a plan B. This is just the beginning. The California Model is about to happen in Florida sooner than it happens in Texas.

A place gets popular, people move there, and costs go up. That's how it worked in Austin, Norcal, Phoenix, and any other place that people have flocked too.
