They also have a much faster turn around. The big jets need to go back to an airport, land, load up with chemical or water, get back in the air and then get back to the fire. That is why those planes are typically using chemical and are creating the fire break. The helicopters and the scoopers put out the fires. The one other thing with aircraft is there is no such thing as the best aircraft. It really depends on the situation. If a helicopter has access to a water source like a smaller river on large pond that is right by the fire then they can actually move more water then even the scoopers. We had a forest fire close to where I work and 4 helicopters were just going in a rotation so as soon as one helicopter had grabbed water the next one was coming in to grab water. The fire was less than a mile away from a large pond so they were moving some serious water.
Incredible amount of talent I would imagine, to fly one of these, skimming water and picking up weight as you skim must be such a precise move. When you dump, they must gain altitude quick.
Our fleet was comprised of retired military aircraft. The US has not built a military seaplane since the late 1940’s. The companies that built them no longer exist. We are looking at buying ones made in Japan. The US capability is invested in small amphibious aircraft.
I don't think it's THAT simple or all the countries currently buying these from us in Canada would all be doing that. You can't just use the same design I'm sure and you also need expertise and experience. These planes have been built for decades in Canada, there is a LOT of expertise not just with the planes but Canada, with the largest intact forest in the world, also has a LOT of experience at fighting wildfires and experience with wildfires encroaching on urban settings. That's why California has asked Canada to send experts there to help.
@@silkeotd7194 They are also single purpose aircraft. It’s great they found the niche market for them. It also takes very deep pockets to procure and operate. No aircraft is perfect. Canada developed them because of the vast remote country. They had also previously relied on retired US military amphibious airplanes. We have more airfields, more desert, many things that determine how to choose an aircraft.
How can a state right next to the biggest ocean on the planet burn year after year??? Not one other piece of land bordering the Pacific burns, just Cali that boasts about having the largest GDP in the country, the 5th biggest economy in the world, but this continues to happen.
Because salt water is very corrosive. Only this aircraft is made to withstand corrosion. Also, the land receiving that salt water will not be very productive for a while. This is why using salt water is only used in extreme situations such as this.
They have legislation that prevents using ocean water for anything but the ocean. All natural freshwater sources are directed to the ocean. Money for reservoirs is missing. Standing reservoirs weren’t filled. Dams were torn down that had previously held water in reservoirs. This made salmon more available. Israel wanted to show California how to remove the salt from the ocean and have useable water. They declined. They outlawed control burns to keep the forest floor cleared because of some insect.
Quebec Canada are proud to send our best and fearless pilots. California should have bought a fleet of CL415 à long time ago. France has bought 6 over the years and they fight fires in the Mediterranean every summers. Spain have over a dozen and ordered new ones. LA County should have a fleet of 10 more but never invested and only rented two every fire season . But we will support our California friends regardless of the economic impact Donald wants to impose on Canada.
British railways used to refill tenders using a similar scooping technique, long troughs filled with boiler water between the rails, and a scoop was lowered as the train passed over at a high rate of speed and the pressure forced the water up into the tender. It makes sense to use such a fast refilling method without relying on pumping, hoses, etc.
Because when the aircraft was hit, all other aircrafts were grounded so that the fire commandment and the FAA can make sure no other unauthorized crafts are in the air. Normal security procedures.
Proud to be Canadian! Doesn't California receive like 12 feet of snow or something crazy in the mountains every winter?? Store that runoff in the spring into reservoirs and then you have reserves ready to go, just open the tap and let it rip.
According to a chart I saw online with all the countries who've been purchasing these Canadian planes, the U.S. owned 10 back several years ago. So they do have some but they are likely owned by private companies maybe?
Anyone ever ask, despite their abilities, how effective are these planes are to contain or extinguish the fires? My understanding is that the water turns into a mist from the heat, and prior to reaching the ground, and has little to no effect.
You can't extinguish a fire from the air. It's the ground crews that eliminate the hot spots to extinguish a fire. Water bombers however are crucial to the ground crews success. They protect the ground crews safety from advancing flame fronts, they can protect structures and they can subside the fire enough for ground crews to move in. It takes a team to put out wildfires and the air assets are a vital part of that team.
@@wally7856 yup.... ideally you have fire fighters on the ground, helicopters and planes dropping water and then with California they have the larger planes dropping chemical which basically create a firebreak. Its basically a military style operation. They also have the spotter planes which are coordinating everything. Its actually really cool to watch.
Drones are used to look for hotspots (if they are thermal equipped) and relay the locations to aircraft and guys on the ground. Drones DO have to yield to manned aircraft, but they are an important tool.
Of course we don't manufacture super scoopers here in the U.S., what do we build here anymore? Not much of anything. But we did build the largest rubber band ball in the world 😢😢😢.
It's not that different in Canada you know. It's not like the U.S. is the only western nation that lost a lot of manufacturing when jobs went to countries with cheap labour. We also lost a lot of our manufacturing too. However, these planes are our design and require expertise that we have in Canada, having the largest intact forest on the planet. It would make little sense to outsource such an industry. Besides, as the interviewee said, they only build about a dozen of these a year (if I'm remembering the # correctly) ...
Well I believe the interviewee noted another water bomber that is perhaps American-made but just is lower capacity and cannot handle salt water as easily. If you do the research, there are other models available across the world.
John makes it sound as though it’s the only aircraft to solve firefighting problems. That aircraft is one very small piece of what it takes to fight fires. One has to ask if they are in such high demand why only 12-15 a year? That would be expanded if they placed satisfying the need over job security.
Because, they're a smaller company that makes a lot of different types of aircraft and trains, with a small division that has continued making amphibious aircraft since the end of WWII--one of a few on Earth to still do so. The reason why the production is paused and a new factory being built is due to corporate restricting and relocation of its primary facilities. That, and they were originally ahead of the curve and their first model of waterbomber wasn't widely sold, so the subsequent generations had been made in smaller batches. But now that there's more wildfires, the Europeans have been snapping them up in large quantities, while the USA pretended like they didn't have a problem.
"Super scooper" is a cutesy-poo term for the Canadair Water Bomber type that has been in service for 6 decades. They also operate all over the Mediterranean.

Not that simple. The area has been in drought mode for a long time and the winds over 100 miles an hour stop everything.
