Today we're taking a look at the Panasonic Lumix BS1H which is one of the best cinema cameras under $4000 - this thing competes with the Blackmagic Pocket 6K, RED Komodo, and Z Cam. In my opinion it's a better value than any of those cameras. But is there a catch?

the contrast in tone between the short film and commercial is hilarious. who likes tomatoes?
Only on burgers
Patrick Tomato 🍅
Loved both samples in the reel. Beautiful work. Appreciate your sensibilities.
All Hail the Cube!
Always appreciate your honestly Patrick! Keep up the great videos
Loved the reel, and the rant at the end. Very appreciative of the focus on making films and less on the next best thing(s). I recently traveled with only a point and shoot and was constantly reminded of how the quality of my experience increased hugely while the quality of my video/photo wasn't actually much lower than if I brought my full kit. The camera quality plateau is real!
Woah, when you mention Nona, I know you're not messing around. Seriously though, I truly enjoy your take on things, very different than what I see on most of RUclips. Keep it up.
I'm always enjoying your very honest opinions. And now you've said what I want to say as well. A lot of the new cameras out now are truly amazing and any conversation about specs, this one vs that.. is kinda lost in the fact very few decisions out there are bad when it comes to buying a camera..for photo or video.. So why even focus on such trivial issues when we should all be making compelling artistic content instead. Use the gear as a vehicle but focus on the ride. For now at least.. I am on a "one for me, one for them" system. Eventually, a one for all of us.
nailed it! love your videos, Alex.
NO NO NO , you wana stop the camera rant 😂 , I'll do it for you:
I want to add something Important for the viewers that are still shopping for their cinema camera . Do not buy online without holding the camera in your hands first , shoot with it first to know how it feels !!! Patrick is right, the image quality in most cameras right now is good enough for skilled filmmakers. For me it came down to the "Easy Of Use" and the "Form Factor " . I spent a whole entire year watching reviews and comparisons everywhere online. I had rigged out my X-T4 to the Max with, monitor , battery grip , side handles , small Shotgun mic , Magnetic ND's, but it was too clunky! So I went to B&H with the plan to buy a C300MKiii or a C70 or even an Ursa 4.6K G2 , spent 2 days at B&H driving the people working there mad, during those 2 days I never once looked at the Sony because I was anti-Sony, and thought the images they produced looked bad compare to other brands. Then On day 3, I met this guy who let me try his FX6 for a bit , and Oh Shit!!! Today I am a proud owner of a Sony FX6 simply because it fits the work that I do better than any of the other cameras. Of course I would have prefer to have 12 bit B-raw or 16 bit RED code raw. But I would be damned If I have to screw on an other ND filter or have to go into menus to adjust my audio levels when shooting Documentaries run and gun styles. The "conclusion is that Form Factor is REALLY important for you to feel comfortable, especially when you are shooting for long Hours, the camera needs to be balanced!!! . The FX6 maid me understand that my X-t4 is perfect for Photography and that's it. Always pic the right tool for the job you have right Now, not the job you think you will have in 6 months. My rant is over, you are all welcome.
My mouth dropped!! Goodness this thing is gorgeous! I’m loving the colors and overall image! Man this might make buying the fx3 a tad bit harder for me!
I have both the FX3 and the S5-I usually opt for S5 if I don’t need 60p (since the Lumix FF cameras dont shoot 60p in FF 😏) b/c of the 5.9k and image quality.
@@cinema-q 🔥🔥🔥
I have the FX3 along with the S1 and GH5II. The image quality is way better on the Panasonic bodies.
The low light (12,800 native) and AF are why I purchased the FX3 so if you don't need these two things, Panasonic is the way to go!
I have the A7S3 and S5 and usually prefer the image that I ge out of the S5, I feel like it holds on much better in mixed lighting conditions. The Sony does have a bunch of other good strengths tho
Patrick Tomasso I like watching your videos because I'm interested in short film making and story telling, and your have an amazing eye for visuals. I like seeing what you do with the gear, so it never feels like just another review.
"Trying to think outside the box." Oh, pun definitely intended. Well played, Sir. Well played.
thanks for this review. Was considering buying the camera but after hearing your take on the camera industry in general, I think ill take a closer look at these different ecosystems before upgrading.
Thanks for the video. I was considering the BS1H so I could have 2 cameras, but I don’t think it’s for me rn. I wish there were NDs at least for no IBIS. Also, Your thoughts on your channel are totally fair!
thanks Patrick! excited for the incoming content!
cheers!
When you say full frame, is the sensor Super 35 4-perf, so I can potentially use 2x lenses or is it 3-perf (or other; full 4K)
Oop, never mind. I see the 5.9K res is in 1.50:1
Re: the ‘camera plateau,’ I think there are still considerations beside form factor that put some cameras above others. For instance, shooting full frame in more than 1 frame rate is a big deciding factor. I think the Panasonic cameras are the only ones left that crop to S35 for high frame rates.
I know what you mean but I also realize my best camera is micro four thirds. Even though I can appreciate FF it’s not the end all be all. It’s subjective image quality not actually technically better. I don’t care about the S35 crops. I ordered a Sony a7iv that also crops S35.
Interesting. Thanks for all the info, man. Cheers from Italy
Great review. This camera looks amazing.
I enjoy the style of your reviews and practical opinions on gear. So while reviewing new cameras does feed into the hype, I feel like your reviews tend to bring it back to reality.
The other issue is nobody watches them.
@@impatrickt fair
Tasty. I’ve always wanted a Hasselblad style cinema camera
Just found your channel and loving your work. The main camera I have is the S5 and just watched your video on FD lenses. Looking to get the 50mm and 28mm and excited to see what the FD lenses can do.
Nice!
Dude your insanely talented. This intro def gave me the vibes of the new Candyman movie intro, but better color grading!
Haven’t had a chance to watch it yet but was liking stuff from the trailer. Thanks for stopping by.
Thank you for this video. The Panasonic S5 and Panasonic S1 are on my list. Also the Panasonic Gh5s
Keeping it real 💯. The cinema reel at the restaurant looks incredible 🙌
Standing applause for the camera rant.
Hey love your thoughts especially when you mentioned what it says about about the industry and where we are going etc… btw, how is the autofocus?
same as any other S camera
@@impatrickt thanks 👍
Loved the review.. so good, beautiful. ♥️♥️

Camera reviews are my most favourite thing in youtube. I feels like digital cameras are reached at some point successful level nowadays. Most of the users will not sell a camera like S5, S1H or A73s as some DSLRs of early days. But more new consumers will be there. Photo/Cinema/Broadcast cameras are being a requirement of larger community. Camera companies will be growing and competing for more new consumers and diversed products.. For me, everything that I needed are already here, and I don't think I will watch reviews as old days. There will be new and diversed products, new reviews and new viewers for them.
-
When it comes to Panasonic, I think they really don't needed any S5 (or any S series Camera) users to upgrade to any other model if you aren't purchased a wrong camera for you. They are expecting us to buy any S series camera as a first full frame ugrade from MFT, First Lumix Camera as a non Panasonic users or as an B Cam for existing S series camera. I think there will be more varities are yet come like a giant photography cam (Large body/Stacked CMOS/PDAF) and more and more Cinema Cam varieties.
Love seeing this! Definitely a camera that's too pro for me haha, but now you got me craving El Catrin
Panasonic is killing it these days. Damn! Great for a drone and gimbal, the cube design. I wish youtube would get on board with better (less) compression. Indie films would benefit. Also, storage card options need to get cheaper and bigger. Batteries need to get better. Full frame cinema primes need to get cheaper. There's a lot of improvement that needs to be made in other places than the camera, you're correct
Patiently waiting for Fuji to make a box camera, preferably with internal prores since the h265 can be a pain during editing.
if you switch to an M1 machine you will LOVE h265. it's my go to codec.
@@impatrickt looking to pick up my first camera. Loving the Lumix s line and I have the 13” m1 with 16 ram and 1tb storage. Does the m1 cut through h265 with no hiccups? Do you use fcp or DaVinci?

is it worth getting a the lumix 35 mm 1.8 if i already have the sigma 28 to 70 ? thxxx
With all that cameras what coming out I am still mega happy with my purchase 2.5 years ago. I would not swap my S1 for this 😎
Night shots were excellent! Thanks for sharing. We shoot with all Panasonic S or GH for our docs but not the box yet - if they make it global shutter it’s probably the only thing we’d use.
That would be cool. I’m holding up for a FF EVA-2 🥂
I like your vibe mate
The short film was freaking incredible.
so yeah, i hear you with the state of cameras now days. it's really the same in the audio world with a/d d/a converters. now days every modern converter just sounds great. so it's all about workflow/connectivity, and yeah, not super interesting (well it is for some folks, and that's cool). i just upgraded big time and got an S5 with the kit lens and i'm looking at that 35mm, but yeah that's pretty much it for me an cameras or even thinking about cameras for a good long while.
I’m here for the Kumato review!
…but the import question how well do they autofocus?! 🤣
whooooooo cares
@@impatrickt hahaha I don’t want to manually focus my kumatos! They need to lock onto my salad even when it hides behind my pepper mill!
What camera/lens did you shoot your own speech on? Looks good.
This actually looks really cool
The Panasonic S5 and Panasonic S1H used are on my list
I just ordered the s5 with the 85 1.8 kit, it's on sale right now! I'm debating whether I should buy the Sigma 28-70 2.8 or the Sigma 24-70 2.8, do you have an opinion on these lenses? I plan to use them for portrait photography, low light wedding photography and video, as well as racing action video. Thank you Patrick. Keep up the great content!
I have the sigma 24-70 and love it. I really like 24 on full frame (watch my 24mm F1.8 review) I think it’s worth it go 24.
@@impatrickt thanks Patrick! I appreciate the advice. The price between the 28-70 and 24-70 is very small. I'll plan to buy the 24-70 soon.
Hey Patrick, any thoughts regarding PL mount glass? I think that mirrorless-to-PL adapters will always be around given that PL mount has been a cine glass industry standard and likely will always be given its universality across numerous camera manufacturers. Because of this, I think I might(!) invest in PL mount glass in the near future. Sure, some PL mount glass is like buying a gently used vehicle that you might need somewhere between a 12-48 month long finance cycle for, but the longevity the lenses will have can be carried from camera to camera, regardless of jumping in and out of different camera ecosystems; the only thing you'd have to buy is an RF/Z/L/E mount adapter for PL glass. What do you think of this assessment? I ask because I remember in the S5 video you made, you said all cameras are great but glass these days is the real difference-maker; and I wholeheartedly agree. As long as Arri is setting the industry standard for their PL and LPL mounts/adapters, would you agree it is a safe bet that PL glass would be a sound investment? Curious what you think. I have (antiquated) Rokinon EF glass right now and am tempted to invest in higher end cine glass and figure PL mount could be the way to go; thinking either Zeiss CP.2/CP.3 spherical or potentially anamorphic lenses if Sirui can release a PL mount kit in either a 1.33x or 1.66x squeeze format. Goal is a 4-lens kit for ~$10K, give or take. I largely just do my own filmmaking but lock down video gigs here and there. I'll be taking the next year or so to save and assess the market. Hope you see this! Any and every opinion you might have on this would be appreciated.
there's enough great native mount glass that I'd rather not adapt anything. im not sure if PL-L exists but it likely does. I don't have any need for PL I prefer to have electrical contact.
@@impatrickt Thanks for the quick reply! Yeah, electrical contact is the biggest sacrifice for anything PL, sadly, so everything will be manual though I suppose you're expecting to go full-manual investing in any kind of PL glass. Fotodiox has some new mirrorless mount-to-PL glass adapters with the only element in between being a variable ND wheel; no speedbooster/magnifying element in between, just variable ND, so I'm led to believe it's not going to impact a crop factor on your sensor and the lens will be true to form. It's an interesting concept.
Hey Patrick first of all I gotta thank you a lot for your previous video about the bgh1 since when I was looking desperetely for reviews when I decided to buy it, your video was the main one I watched over and over again, and me being someone who already invested a lot in m43 lenses I happily paired the bgh1 to my old and trusty gh5.Having said that I agree with you when you say that rigging the camera with two monitors or using the phone is kinda cumbersone and a long process.60% of my shooting I'm more than happy with the 400mbps All I internal Codec, but with the latest update form Panasonic you can assign a Fn button to activate HDMI RAW OUTPUT and that is really a game changer.I just had done two commercial work and I tried the feauture on the field and that really solve the issue we both don't like.I think the same is possible with the bs1h or at least it will through firmware updates.A mirrorles like an S5 or a GH5 is for sure much more handy but trust me when I tell you that the more you use the box camera the more you get used to it.After 6 months of using both I can say I am equally fast with both systems.Cheers mate
I won’t buy one until there’s a screen. I don’t care about the raw to be honest.
Looks pretty cinematic to me ;)
Do you have a separate link to the short film? It's amazing.
Just search my name on Vimeo.
Panasonic really does some special stuff. I’m impressed!
hi tom
nice Video Patrick. i bought a s5 couple of months ago. i was former Gh5´user and im totally agree with the IBIS. it ´s a mayor red flag to me.
damn the footage looks so good, How is it with Auto focus? I want to use this on a Gimbal
Would be awful to balance on a gimbal.
I freakin like this video!
Because of the Kumato, you sir, have just gained a new subscriber. You're welcome and thank you.
Kumato > Komodo
The story is more important than the camera… I agree and felt the same about cameras for awhile.
I feel like for $2K, this is a steal.

You talked about symphonic concert recording,it s my side job as classical orchestra musician and Audio ingénieur.
I am actually shooting concerts multicam with 2 GH5,1 GH4, and GH5s,2BMPCC4k...all second hand.I must shoot Vlog 10bit422 to match them and for the flexibility in post and all Resolve color grade I love.
Shooting High ISO with vintage zoom Adapters and multitude of primes...
I am happy with the result but MFT has their limitation...was thinking to upgrade for one main camera for Solists or a Totale of orchestra...so have you any suggestions?
6K Pro,S5 just wait go FF...need unlimited recording time 10bit422 log minimum.

@@impatrickt thanks probably do that with the kit lens 20-60 you can buy it here in Switzerland for 1490 CHF so 1500$ +- aftertaxes
I’d love to use cameras like this in a streaming / video creation setup. Tbh tho… that’s just me daydreaming. It’s not like I would make the use of it to make it worth it for me. 😅
Why do you prefer the S5 over the S1H? Because you mentioned that you might choose the BS1H instead of the S5 if it'd basically be a S1H :)
The S1H is simply too big as a hybrid body and it kills the benefits of that form factor because of it. S5 is small, light, and easily rigged - or completely compact and tiny if you need it to be. The S1h is this weird ugly middle child.
@@impatrickt definitely valid points. Thanks for your answer!
At this point Lumix should just name their cube cameras the Tomasso Edition

I asked a Panasonic rep if the LUMIX cameras were capable of recording “true” 24fps and 48fps to a blackmagic 12g and an atomos ninja v recorder for that matter, and he told me because Panasonic adheres to the HDMI standards, you cannot record these frame rates to a recorder over HDMI. I was wondering if you had a chance to test this out with your blackmagic raw recordings and, to be honest, I am hopeful that you were successful in recording these frame rates that are supported internally by the S1H (and now the BS1H)🤘🏼
Edit: I should specify we were talking about 4K recording
I only shoot 23.98 - it's a standard for film and commercials. at least here in Canada - HDMI won't do 24fps - you get 23.98 - Panasonic was correct.
Thank you for that confirmation. I am still unsure as to why there is so much talk around “cinema” cameras supporting those frame rates when it’s not used by a vast majority of professional work…
@@jakekeele because people like to gate keep and try to pretend it’s the gear that makes you pro. blade runner 2049 was shot 23.98

I kinda hope Panasonic makes a bs5. Split the difference between the two
I think bgh1 and bs1h are first drafts for sure. we'll see more iterations and features in the future.
Why S5 over S1H?
same image quality. fraction of the price.
It’s hip to be square
But does it shoot 422 or 4444???
these are 422 cameras. ive never... ever had to shoot anything at 4444. VFX, broadcast TV, commercials etc. 422 is a-ok.

Man, you tried to explain like Ryan conolly from Film Riot

@@impatrickt Film Riot.
I hate full frame and the BS1H kills me every time I shot product shots. The depth of focus sucks.
During a commercial, the director got pissed, and we switched to the BGH1 and the added depth of focus and depth of field saved the day.
you should be lighting for the shot you want so just stop down your lens. nearly every modern film/show is now shooting large format (full frame) - Sony Venice, Red Raptor, Alexa LF etc. MFT annoys me to no end. It’s easy to get the DOF of crop sensors on FF, harder to get the DOF on FF with crop sensors. Pick your path.
@Patrick Tomasso No you don't. I never shot beyond T2.8. Ever.
Borg inspired
I hate tomatoes, who knows, I might like the Camato 😅
Kumatoes have been around for a long time now. I believe that they derive from one of the plethora of tomato species which were introduced to the West when the Russians dropped Sovietism.
In the 1970s, Luis Ortega would often go with his father to the fields cultivated by his family in the village of Agra, on the Almerian coast. His curiosity led him to discover that the tomatoes at the end of the lines, which received less water, were a different colour, but were much more intense and sweet in flavour. Having observed this, the young farmer set himself a personal challenge: to grow a tomato with an authentic and intense flavour that was a different colour. This was how the Kumato® tomato was born, on the shores of the Mediterranean.
@@impatrickt Interesting, thanks
@@impatrickt Here in Spain they are everywhere and we have a cherry tomato version. They are nice but there are much better varieties as well like Raf, Monterosa, Mar azul, Corazon del buey etc
I looked at the BS1H and the BGH1. I actually had the BGH1 for a bit. For me, the "form factor" thing is so absurd it's literally a meme. I shot a feature film with the GH5, and its "form" was never an issue or a limitation. The shape of a camera has nothing to do with what you can achieve with it. Plus, you put a cage on your camera and all those "access points" you get on a cube shaped camera go right out the window. The DP for Villaneuve's "DUNE" is shooting his next film with the Sony FX3. What? Not a cube shaped camera? Yea, exactly. I'll let the kiddies drool over their fetish for cube/box cameras. Let 'em at it. I'll be on sidelines pointing and giggling.
What's key about this video for me, is that you showed that in the right hands, almost any camera will give you what you want. Just get to know all the ins and outs of your camera, and you can probably create impressive work. Great content, Patrick. Thanks.
Greg using the FX3 is proof that form factor absolutely does matter depending on what you're trying to do. I love the Gh5 but I wouldnt use it for a film - not because the image isn't great but ergonomically it doesn't fit the needs of what I'd need on set. I could see the FX3 being a bit better too but not quite what I'd want - I much prefer how easy it is to rig up cubes which in turn makes the experience better and I produce better work accordingly. Very silly to completely negate a hundred years of camera developments that obviously includes form factor improvements. The shape absolutely matters. Ultimately you can make anything with any camera - but it has to be the camera you enjoy using.
@@impatrickt Like you said, “you can make anything with any camera.” That’s all I’m saying.
@@AllThingsFilm1 you didn't say that though - you implied that form factor has no meaning and you'd laugh at people talking about it. Bizarre stance. Cameras matter, sensors matter, form factor matters... just because you can make something with anything doesn't mean it will be good.
