Thanks, Jack, I love the Stone Roses cover, thanks for the information about the connection to the 1968 riots, and the reason for the lemons being on it. The Only Ones 'Even Serpents Shine' (1979) I think is a enegmatic cover and Black Sabbath's eponymous debut (1970), nobody knows (including the band and all involved) who the woman is on the cover, which adds to the atmosphere.

Hey Nick, I was going to show the Sabbath debut as one of my favourites. It's a beauty. Sabbath's covers are hit or miss. The debut, Vol.4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Heaven and Hell are cool, but I don't like many of the others. I'd heard before that no one knew who the woman was on the cover. Like you say, it's a very enigmatic cover. I also love the Even Serpents Shine cover... its such a great album all in. Cheers for watching and commenting, Jack

Hi Jack. That combination of Scottish and German names is hilarious. Like music, visual art is so much a matter of taste and in general I'm drawn to warm colors. To be honest I'd never looked twice at the Quadrophenia cover which had always struck me as nondescript. My favourite cover of all time is Late for the Sky by Jackson Browne, which is based on a painting by the surrealist painter Magritte.

Hey James! You’re so right, all forms of artistic expression are purely subjective. I love top 10 lists and stuff like that, but they‘ve got to align with my own tastes. So, they are pretty pointless really (but fun). It‘s funny, but Late For The Sky isn‘t an album cover that has stood out for me. I’ve got the album, but don’t think I’ve really properly listened to it. Though I do like Jackson Browne, especially For Everyman. We spoke the other day about Sensual World, which I think is one of Kate‘s least interesting covers, which is probably why I’m less drawn to it. We like to collect shiny things, I suppose, and are drawn to things that we find aesthetically pleasing. Makes me wonder why I like Booker T‘s Green Onions so much. Cheers for watching and commenting!

I don't like The Next Day sleeve either , it's a fine line between the greatness of the original (Heroes) and the complete disappointment of this. I suppose that's the medium of Art for you.
    A couple of my favourites that reflect the music therein ;
Genesis - A Trick of the Tail.
Pink Floyd - Wish you were here.
And you are absolutely spot on Jack with The Specials debut. They absolutely nailed it !!! So iconic.
A poor one in my view is Blur '13', but really like the LP however. Great video Jack. 😍🎵🎵🤘

Hi Peter, I think a lot of Blur's album covers are quite poor. I like the cover to Modern Life is Rubbish and I also like the The Ballad of Darren, because it's a photograph taken in my hometown of Gourock. Wish You Were Here is such an iconic cover and it helps when you love the album so much. Many thanks for watching, Jack

Ah, yes. Always an endless debate around good vs bad album covers! I didn't know all those references on The Stone Roses cover (which I agree is pretty great). The Specials cover just makes one want to give it a spin. Simple and effective. Clowns: they creep me out a little, Jack! Great overview 😎🎶

Cheers Ed! I’m not overly fond of clown generally.. I kind of find them creep too. These ones just look sad! Cheers for watching and commenting pal!

Amazing how unbelievably bad some of those covers are!! ‘Clip art special’ had me rolling 😆 The good covers are well & truly thought out, though 👍 Really enjoyed this! Cheers-R

Hi Richard, I think the ones I dislike the most are the lazy ones like the Pixies and Vampire Weekend. There's no way on earth the bands could have thought they were good covers. You wonder how much input they had on the design. Cheers for watching, Jack

Great choices, Jack. Jiminy Crickets, that Now and Then cover blows! The famous pop artist, Ed Ruscha, designed it. But it just doesn't speak to anything. Even a screen grab from the video would have been better. That Bowie cover irritates me, too, even though I know he was attempting to signify that he was breaking away from his past works. That Jimmy Campbell cover, it's weird and unnerving, but in a good way. I think I'll give it a thumbs up!

Hey Mark, I loved the promo video for Now and Then... had a lump in my throat watching it for the first time. Like you say, a simple screen grab would have been better... a never before seen photograph of the band would have been nice too. The Jimmy Campbell splits opinion, but I find it interesting to look at and it holds a little mystery. Dull album covers are the worst.

Excellent look at and thoughts about design or the lack thereof.
Love that Neutral Milk album, both look of and sound. Wish I had the box set.
    Stone Roses of course,
    Magic stuff that.
    Cheers Jack

Hey Morten, I could have picked up the NMH boxset earlier in the year for 40 pounds... kicking myself now for passing on it. It was full of cool stuff!

Some really nice album covers Jack. Sweet Revenge is just very cool and understated. I also really like The Neutral Milk Hotel cover even though I'm not to keen on the album itself.

Surprised you don't like NMH, Mike. Thought they'd have been right up your street. Have you listened to many of the other E6 bands?

@@TheVinylVoyage-ud3uf It's the vocals that spoil it for me. I think it makes all the tracks sound the same. I wouldn't say I hated the album. It just doesn't excite me.

Man I wish I had jumped on board this thread I’m guessing it’s too late now but you’ve shown some great (and not so great) covers here! That Message LP is awesome! I just didn’t get that Bowie cover You’re right It seems lazy LoL!
Man I’ve been after that Jimmy Campbell album with the clowns for awhile I love that cover!
What’s that Mantra album like? It looks cool!
That Stone Roses album is so good!
I have an OG of that Specials album I used to listen to it a lot back in the day.
Man I have never seen anyone else show that Picnic comp Love the Pink Floyd tracks!
I still need to grab a copy of that Neutral Milk LP I have one begative about that album cover and it’s that the bands name or track list is nowhere to be found Haha! I’m not sure why they did that but the record is really good! Great stuff Jack! Peace ✌️👽

Hi Brian, the Mantra album is a Canadian folk psych album. Sounds a bit Simon and Garfunkel at times, but with a little psychedelic sound. I really like it. The acoustic guitars sound lovely. The Picnic Harvest Sampler has some beauties on it. The Floyd track Embryo is great, plus I'd love to pick up that Forest album (UK folk psych). If you've not already heard them, I'm sure you'd love a lot of those other Elephant 6 bands. Check out the song Jumping Fences by Circulatory System... top drawer Beatlesy neo-psych. Cheers for watching and commenting pal! Jack

I think Now and Then is a bland song which reflects the unimaginative cover perfectly in my opinion..as you quite rightly said Jack, a poor Swan song indeed.
Quadrophenia is a perfect cover and music is likewise..a great match.
Picnic is a great comp and the cover is so intriguing, slightly sinister yet almost comical, typical of early 70s period pop art.
    Great video.

Cheers Rob! 😂 I quite like Now and Then, but it definitely feels like it's missing something. It is a little flat, but I think the sense of occasion still helps me enjoy it. I love those 70s record covers, so much better generally, than modern album art. Often it feels like an afterthought. Cheers for watching and commenting, Jack

    Wank : Sleaford Mods
I like Chips but not this cover
    Steam : Steam
I picked this up a few months past just for cover
Original version of Hey Hey Kiss him goodbye is on it , but the cover ; so bad its good
Shot of Love : Bob Dylan
    Really ?
    3 of my favorite
Paris 1919 : JC looking very cool
PJ Harvey : Rid of Me
Maybe because I was playing yesterday
We’re only in it for they Money
    The Mothers
Every detail on that cover is as deliberate as Beatles choices

    • @TheVinylVoyage-ud3uf
      @TheVinylVoyage-ud3uf  21 день назад

Hey Jesse! Oh yeah, Shot of Love is a howler!!! I really like Paris 1919 too. An album that oozes elegance and good taste. There's something grimy about all Sleaford Mod's covers 😆 I'm familiar with the We're Only In It For The Money cover, but don't haven't examined it closely. Just really know it's a parody of Sgt Pepper... I'll take a closer look! Cheers, Jack

Jack, I think boring is worse than dogshit. At least dogshit elicits some kind of reaction 😂That Message album cover looks like what is possibly going on in my head when I get hay fever 😂 I love the Next Day cover. It's conceptual and brilliant. It's him showing a healthy disrespect for his legacy....And then you show the clown cover!!! 🤦‍♂ I gotta say the more Hipgnosis covers I see the more I don't understand what all the fuss is about. They're all look a bit naff & dated to me. Stone Roses, Specials & Neutral Milk Hotel are the winners for great covers and equally great music contained for me. Nice stuff Jack 👍

    • @TheVinylVoyage-ud3uf
      @TheVinylVoyage-ud3uf  14 дней назад +1

Hey Ben, can't argue with that. Boring is definitely worse than DS, or BS or any other faeces you care to mention. The Message is all existential dread and the blurring of reality and dreams. NOT HAYFEVER 😆C'mon the JC cover has everything: it's big, bold, sinister and surreal! I thought you'd like the Picnic cover... gas masks, picnics, nuclear war. I agree that a lot of the Hipgnosis are poor, especially the later 70s stuff. But Saucerful of Secrets, Houses of the Holy, Atom Heart Mother etc are beauties. The Bowie would have been better with Hunky Dory replaced with a big clown face 🤡 Cheers for watching and commenting, Jack

I took an instant dislike to the Beatles cover, but I do like the Bowie cover, though I can't articulate why. Oh, man, Jimmy Campbell clown cover! I'd give it a downvote, mostly because I detest clowns. You are right: the Hindu Love Gods cover is boring. The Vampire Weekend cover was on my shortlist for bad design 🙂

Just reading up on the Next Day cover. It’s supposedly to do with moving on from his previous work by obscuring the past. A number of previous Bowie covers were used, but Bowie thought it worked best with Heroes. Who am I to argue with DB!!!!
