From what I've heard, they recorded the cymbals separately from the rest of the drums so that the cymbals sounded cleaner. Grohl said it was weird to be hitting these muffled pads for cymbals during the pass where they got the drum part.
Yep that's right, I could have uploaded only the cymbals but that wouldn't have been that exciting of a listen I feel.
