Like others have said, this is probably the most informative video I've seen on sprinkler adjustments -- and the first one ever that revealed the ability to swap out nozzles! I never knew that and have worked on my own sprinkler systems before. Kudos on the video, Silver Cymbal! (As the "Professor" mentioned below, very good instructional technique - good verbal information with synchronized visual explanation. As a DIYer, I especially appreciated the little PVC mock-up stand you put together to show a rotor head in a working, out-of-the-ground demonstration for clarity. That was an extra step and bit of effort you went to, that was appreciated.)
Very kind of you. I felt the same when someone finally shared these with me too. These make all the difference on having your system tuned for your yard.
It should be said that the ability to swap the nozzle should be thought out prior to doing so. 90% of the people watching this wont have the water pressure through the city to throw 5.0 GPM nozzles in multiple heads on one zone without the zone tanking from low water pressure.
You are one of the best video teachers out there, all subjects. Very few people would take the time to assemble an above-ground sprinkler as you did, solely for delivering a 100% clear video on the topic. And you stick to the point. Thank you for this great video series.
I did not know about the nozzles, that they can be replaced. I have a few sprinklers that need this. I thought I was going to have to replace the sprinklers, again, but now I won’t. Thank you.
This is the absolute best video I have watched regarding sprinkler heads. Thank you for providing this information. So thrilled that the amount of water flow can be adjusted simply by changing one tiny part of the sprinkler head. Very interesting.
I think some people get intimidated by in-ground sprinkler systems. They are very easy to work on and adjust. Thank you for putting together these type of videos!
Thank you.... never realized the nozzles could be switched out? Unreal. Probably just saved me a few hundred bucks to fix several problem issues with my system. Keep up the great content.
With the sprinklers running, take that white adjustment key and stick the plastic end of it into the hole with the plus and minus signs and turn it until you feel it engaging. Hold the running sprinkler head with your left hand and turn the key either to the left (-) or right (+). This will either decrease or increase the lateral swing of the head. With most brands, the right swing remains the same while the left is what the key adjusts. If the right swing needs adjusting, do that first. Grab a pair of channel lock pliers and turn the whole head so it's right swing stops where you want it. Don't grip it too tight because it's only plastic and can crack. Once the right swing has been set, use the key to make adjustments to the left swing.
Excellent Video, Having the sprinkler attached to a base platform was excellent to see all parts of the sprinkler up close. Your video was not jumping around and easy to view. Excellent precise instructions, good clear voice and sound quality and no background wind noise or music. I am going out right now and change a flow nozzle. Thanks so much for your time and effort to produce a top-notch video.
This is amazing, thank you! I just installed an extremely DIY system with no experience. I had no idea you could change out nozzles. I thought I had to swap out the entire sprinkler head!
Thank you. This helps to where i moved in to. An acre and a half with a creek fed watering system. Ive been learning by trial and error. This is little tid bits of information that is helpful. Thanks again
Great, understandable explanation. I had my lawn and sprinkler system redone last October so of course I didn't find out the sprinkler system wasn't covering the entire lawn until now. I've been researching how to fix this and you had the answer. I just need to get one of those adjustment tools. Thanks!
Glad it helps. Mine was the same for years and installers don’t want to deal with tuning the system they just tell you to run it longer until you go bankrupt. Thanks for the nice comment and for watching
Just remember that picking it out is not as easy as shown. The nozzle fits pretty tightly. Picking it out will destroy the nozzle, better to release the retaining screw and turn the water on. The nozzle will just shoot out.
Outstanding instructional video! I had no idea the sprinklers could be adjusted or the nozzle changed. Now I can do this myself instead of hiring someone which is very expensive. I really appreciate you sharing this video :)
Good video but I have a couple of comments. 1) one thing you didn't take into consideration is if the system can handle a larger nozzle. So say with your current pressure and gpm you can only run 8 gallons a min per zone. If your zone has 4 heads 2 gpm nozzle size by increasing nozzles on that zone you will loose pressure. 2) the best way to get even coverage is to do an irrigation audit. Set up little cups in your yard. Run all zones for 30 min then measure how much water in each cup, times that by 2 and you will figure out how much water you are actually putting down per hour. Then you can adjust from there. Remember in the heat of summer in full sun you need 1.5" of water a week depending on soil type. I just did this with my system and realized I wasn't putting down nearly as much water as I thought I was.
Excellent video.... Tip: If you get dirt in the set screw hole in the small hole inthe rubber cap. You need to clean the dirt out so you cabn use the tool. You need to use a water hose on high power to clean out the dirt so you can adjust the set screw and therefore adjust the spray pattern using the tool.
Very well done and informative. I have had a system for years and am just now starting to replace some of my Hunter PGP rotors. I needed a good tutorial and thank you for providing it.
Thank you! I wondered if that key thing was to adjust the sprinkler heads! I had found it inside the sprinkler control box, which I can’t get working correctly, but I watched your video anyway and learned a valuable tip!
A you kidding me!! For years all I have done is try to control the stream with that tool but I had no idea the dang nozzles could be replaced. Now I have lots of brown spots in this Texas heat and could have avoided it. Thanks for this video!! I’m off to find the clip and lots of replacement nozzles.
good informative video. Two additional comments....the screw adjustment in the head not only controls the distance. It provides a more uniform coverage when screwed down a bit more. If your throwing max distance on a head....typically you aren't getting as even a coverage from the head all the way to the max distance. Also, the rate at which the water goes down is also dependent on the number of degrees the sprinkler is set up for. Meaning....if a head is only watering a 90 degree area, and another sprinkler in the same zone is throwing a 300 degree pattern....the head only watering the 90 degree area will have put the same amount of water (assuming its the same type/same nozzle GPM), but to a smaller zone, hence....more water in a smaller area for the area.
Great information to be added. I will caution that it is important to not put the screw down too far. Often I see the screw to far down preventing the sprinkler and nozzle to function as they are designed. We need more water at the outer edge of the arc than we do in the middle. As the sprinkler rotates, it spends less time at the outer edge of the arc over any sq. inch than it will in the middle. I have found that to do this, it is best to lower the screw so that it barely touching the water. It seems like the stream at 7:20 is about right.
I notice that there isn't really a "seal/gasket" around the inserted plastic nozzle piece, and you can see water 'leaking' / streaming down the side of the head, causing puddles. Is there a way to fix that? I had this issue with brand new Saturn III heads. I tried making adjustments with that screw, which seemed to help hold the nozzle in better.. I am thinking I could take the nozzle out, and wrap it with some Teflon tape, and then re-insert it. You can really see what I'm talking about at 1:36 (Watch the water running own the black cylinder head)
Hey did you ever figure out how to deal with the leaks around the nozzles? I just bought the same heads from orbit and they all leak past the nozzles, seems wasteful.
Not bad. You should also include that obtaining optimum du (distribution uniformity) can be done with nozzle selection. Ie if one head is set at 180 degrees and another is set at 90, then the 180 should have a nozzle twice as large as the 90. For example if I use at 2 on a 90 then I need a 4 on a 180. BTW I'm a certified irrigation technician with the I.A. (the irrigation association).
As always, on point. I love how you thoughroughly explain the process and go to the extent of building a contraption to illustrate how the sprinkler functions. Great educator!!🌾👍🌞💧
This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much! And the added links too. I went directly to Amazon and ordered what I needed and it’ll be here next day!
Very clear and informative video. While I knew you could buy sprinklers with different output, I didn't know you could interchange the nozzles. The only additional piece of info that would be helpful would be the range of outputs available. What is the least output and most.
Thank you changing nozzles can make a huge difference. The pros never tell homeowners about it and it can fix issues and make sure the pattern is right.
Is it better to keep the line on a 3/4 or 1/2 Inche if I have 75 psi pressure? I put 2 that do 180 degrees , and 2 voyager II , I feel like the voyager is not pushing as well as your video thanks
Your channel reminds me of Chris Fix. You sound and do your production just like him - awesome job. New fan, new subscriber, new homeowner trying to learn and understand everything irrigation better. Can you tell me how I determine if I have enough pressure in the line to add another zone? I have tree hoses that spew water and I wanted to replace this with a head, but am unsure if I have enough in the line to fire a sprinkler up like the one in this video. Any advice?
Good stuff Maynard! Many thanks. Did you make any other videos that illustrate how to set the right stop position or the pattern fan width? Those would be helpful too.
Excellent instruction! Very clear explanation and visuals are perfect! Are the nozzles interchangeable among manufacturers, or specific to each one. I have both Hunter and older Rainbird in my yard. (in different stations,).
You also have to take note that depending on the system your sprinklers are running on. City water or Well water, you'll need to consider some things. Not so much with city water as pressure consistency is not really a problem. However on Well water run systems, the larger the nozzle, the harder the well needs to run to maintain a steady flow of pressure, but at the same time if you cut the water flow too dramatically, you'll cause your well to begin cycling, (switching on and off repeatedly) which could put further wear and tar on the pressure switch. It's why the placement and quantity of sprinkler heads is so important.

I really appreciate the very nice comment! Thank you for saying this and watching my videos.
Unless I missed, you should also show how to adjust the turning pattern, I’m waiting for that mahalo
@@SilverCymbal wich brand of sprinkler you recommend
They are secrets to me! As a retired college professor, I must compliment you on your excellent instructional video. You're a master teacher!
I did not know about the nozzles, that they can be replaced. I have a few sprinklers that need this. I thought I was going to have to replace the sprinklers, again, but now I won’t. Thank you.

Thank you very much
Thanks silver I had no idea that the number on the nozzle corresponded to gal/min.
Thank you I appreciate that
Wow, great! I've been running my sprinklers 20 minutes and getting 1/10th" of water! This will definitely help!
This is the best sprinkler video
This was very helpful. Thank you. You told me in minutes what I’ve been struggling with for years
Me too! Dido...
Thank you.... never realized the nozzles could be switched out? Unreal. Probably just saved me a few hundred bucks to fix several problem issues with my system. Keep up the great content.
Great video, very informative. I would like to learn how to control the watering angle of the sprinkler. I mean 45, 90, 180 and the full circle

Learning about the clip holder was great! Many times I tried holding the nosebleed head to make the adjustments! Both hands
free is very wonderful!
Can’t thank you enough. You have saved me hundreds of $$$ with you tips. Thank you so much!!!
As a new home owner this is the video I have been looking for!!!! Well done.

Excellent video...just moved into a new home with an automatic sprinkler system.. now I learned something new...tks!
Thank you to the point with a close up of the rotor head . Very helpful
This is excellent info on adjusting water flow that most videos do not cover. Easy fixes. Great work!
This is amazing, thank you! I just installed an extremely DIY system with no experience. I had no idea you could change out nozzles. I thought I had to swap out the entire sprinkler head!
This video has improved my watering so much. Thank you for doing this video on how to improve the sprinkler head

Very informative I got more information in this short time than I got from the manufacturer. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for explaining the instructions by making a video. I guess folks will watch this instead of reading the instructions👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks. Now I understand picking (and installing) the correct nozzle. I needed that.

@Shim Barax yes inches a week
A picture and word perfect instructional video. Thank you.

Great tutorial on sprinklers system adjustment. Just what’s I’m looking for. You’ve earn a sub 🙏
Thanks, just got sprinkler system, good to know!
Glad I could help!
Good stuff Maynard! Many thanks. Did you make any other videos that illustrate how to set the right stop position or the pattern fan width? Those would be helpful too.
thanks.......very simple to understand.
thank for the excellent tip on sprinklers heads
Happy to help!
Awesome video!! Thanks for the clear and concise advice!! You rock!!
Totally wicked video! Awesome, I enjoy watch this video and definitely I will buy it soon thanks 😊👍😁😎
Excellent video. Love it. Where can I get the clip you used to keep the adjustment screw visible and able to work on.
Excellent instruction! Very clear explanation and visuals are perfect! Are the nozzles interchangeable among manufacturers, or specific to each one. I have both Hunter and older Rainbird in my yard. (in different stations,).
Thank you. Brilliant job on explaining.
Glad it was helpful!
Appreciate the info ! How about adjusting the direction of the spray?
Thats funny, i just got my first sprinkler system and knew all of that. How you ask. Because i read the fkn instructions 😂
Not the system I use, but the information very helpful! Thank you!
Thank You!!! Beautiful backyard!!!

I have learned something new today, I didn’t know that you can change the nozzle on sprinkler head. Subscribed and like, thanks friend.👍
Wow, this is very detailed, thank you for sharing and teach us, very nice videos!!!!!
Thank you for the nice comment I have fun making these too.
Thank you. Great video. I would also like to know how to adjust the area the sprinkler covers from side to side.
Thanks now that I know how to make adjustments on my system.
