Probably my all-time favorite artist. The amount of emotion is insane. I used to listen to this at night and enter a state of pure euphoria. A combinatino of happiness, nostalgia, and sadness that I can't describe with words. This is something special.
I was at this gig and it was one of the spine tingling jaw dropping mesmerising audience silencing moments and while I'll never forget it, it is nice to relive it years later
My goodness...That was heartbreakingly beautiful. It is pretty hard to get through the whole thing without shedding a few tears. The Staves add so many gorgeous layers to the original song.
This is a message I want to get to Bon Iver, but I feel like anyone who reads it can help me appreciate what I feel ----------------Hi 🙂 I understand that your songs probably weren't written thinking of people like me, but I wanted to let you know how much your music has carried me through such a hard time. From around the age of 12 I have struggled with my sexuality and when I was 16 I found your music through suggested videos on RUclips. I used to watch many videos during the day and during sleepless nights and even though the lyrics didn't relate to my situation your music made me cry in a way that helped my accept who I am. I am now 19 and have passed my first year of medical school as an openly gay teenager. I am a massive fan and appreciate your authenticity, it has helped me to overcome huge obstacles and appreciate who I am. Thank you for everything you have done and will do in the future, it means more than I can ever explain. Thank you so much.
Tweet him @blobtower he has retweeted me and liked one of my tweets to him. So there is a good chance you can tell him how you feel and he will see it! :)
Sweet jesus. The ultimate version, and the crowd showed the proper restraint as well. Thanks so much for recording and uploading, really happy that I can watch this.
Is it just me or does this version sound slightly better? It's probably the way he and The Staves sing that mix so perfectly and also the sound of the guitar. Makes me tear up.
+ToraydoBull the thing that music has, that poetry rarely has, that short fiction and long fiction never have, is live reinvention. He's had years to rehash the structure of the song as well as, and more importantly, the emotions that inform it. Of course his talented friends add ; )
I discovered The Staves a couple months ago thanks to Angus & Julia Stone, the girls were touring with them in France. And a couple weeks ago, I discovered Justin Vernon produced their album. Such a weird but good feeling, you know when you find out that your favorite meal is even better with your second favorite meal (does that make any sens ?). Well, Justine and The Staves together, that's what it was to me, the perfect and sweetest association !
I completely agree. I've loved Bon Iver forever and about 3ish years ago I seen The Staves sing on the Jools Holland Show and fell in love. Went to see them live and fell even more in love, Then Justin announced he was producing their new album!
lea3ify Justin Vernon just put on a spectacular happening in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Two days of spectacular(hot) weather. Wind & storms at night couldn't stop 40,000 people in the wilds of the Midwest from having the time of their lives. Sufjan Stevens, The National, The Staves, Sturgill Simpson, Bon Iver, Phox & more collaborated with impromptu interchangeable members throughout the weekend. The sound system was better than most outdoor venues. There were performance artists & video premiers. It was like one big musical family. Cheese curds & Packers set the tone. What just happened? Once in a lifetime. The Staves singing Lump Sum was .......AMAZING. I love English vocalists.
flyingfishsurf I KNOW! (still crying out of emotion, jealousy and disappointment not to be there haha). I'm stuck here in France while you guys have the best things out there.. :p I would have loved to hear Bon Iver's new songs, especially #2 which sounded awesome !! Sufjan Stevens, The National, The Staves, a lot of my favorites artists were there, that seemed like a pretty awesome festival..
+lg3ify I found the staves and Justin Vernon a week ago after their BBC 6 music's live at maida vale set. A perfect association is an understatement. (BBC iplayer for 20 more days)
Dude, I was not expecting to cry at work today. Thanks a lot! Never heard of The Staves before, but when she came in with the verse by herself, whoo weee! That got me good.
One of the best live performances of one of Bon Iver's best songs. Can some one please explain to me how 22 people disliked this video? Though in a wonderfully ironic fashion, that's the perfect number for Bon Iver. Now if only we can a get a million likes ; )
he said he has changed the song a lot since the album version- but thats okay as he likes change. i mentioned that stacks was written in open D tuning and we spoke a lot about open tunings and how cool they are. he was such a cool guy. I was really inspired after talking to him. he tolled me to aspire to make music that sounds good and to keep it simple and stuff. but yeah when i saw them in edinburgh it was easily the best performance i'd ever seen. i would have loved to have seen this
Near seven years ago he played this song for my mother, just before her unfortunate heart episode. Tomorrow, on the nigh anniversary, I will happily listen to this before I see my mother on her 61st birthday. I feel the spiritual prevalence of this song helped me find the guidance to get the exact help my mother needed at the time. That you God and thank you Bon Iver. You helped save my mother.
So beautiful. You can feel every ounce of his pain, even after singing it a thousand times. Thanks for the upload. I'm a big Staves fan and they led me to Bon Iver, which I'm really grateful for.
Wow, didn't know they collaborated, funny how genius find genius. Seeing him do this solo live on the 2011 tour was one of the highlights of my 40 years of concertgoing. The capacity crowd was completely rapt; someone sneezed and they got loudly shushed. NPR posted the show on its website and said, "there was so much love for Justin in the audience, it seemed like the crowd would rush the stage and eat him alive."
1:07 song starts 3:38 The Staves This my excavation and today is Qumran Everything that happens is from now on This is pouring rain This is paralyzed I keep throwing it down two-hundred at a time It's hard to find it when you knew it When your money's gone And you're drunk as hell On your back with your racks as the stacks are your load In the back and the racks and the stacks of your load In the back with your racks and you're un-stacking your load Well I've been twisting to the sun and the moon I needed to replace The fountain in the front yard is rusted out All my love was down In a frozen ground There's a black crow sitting across from me His wiry legs are crossed He is dangling my keys, he even fakes a toss Whatever could it be That has brought me to this loss? On your back with your racks as the stacks are your load In the back and the racks and the stacks of your load In the back with your racks and you're un-stacking your load This is not the sound of a new man or crispy realization It's the sound of the unlocking and the lift away Your love will be Safe with me
I didn't think this song could be any better, but what do you know, Justin is just too awesome. And what's up with those three angels next to him. I can't stop smiling.
Please record the official of the tour at this time! I could see in Tokyo, the tears did not stop because I was moved. It was an incredible experience.
Every performance he has done of this track has an a unique yet different emotional undertone, I was sad to hear Justin had to cancel his tour but he is human and frail which is part of the reason he writes and performs such incredible music, The album "For Emma" was recorded in a log cabin in Wisconsin in the middle of winter, you can hear it if you really try!
this is amazing. this is my favourite bon iver song and i really like the staves too- I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HAVE SEEN THIS- i met JV in edinburgh a year ago and had a 30 min conversation, much of it about this song
Was actually there that night, never seen this video though. wow feels like being being taken back in time, such a powerful and emotive song and Justin just kills it with the Staves.
The worst that can happen is that 'you' are less desirable and 'you' feel uncomfortable enough in your own skin that it affects how 'you' live your life. Shaving it all off doesn't work for everyone. But, I know... Shave it! Man up! - The usual advice.
It is a difficult business to deal with, losing hair follicle production. Being positive is a great path to travel. Bald or not, Bon Iver is on stage singing/playing amazing music and performing that music with the Staves. Life could be worse, right???

I‘d gladly give My left kidney for a proper recording of this
Probably my all-time favorite artist. The amount of emotion is insane. I used to listen to this at night and enter a state of pure euphoria. A combinatino of happiness, nostalgia, and sadness that I can't describe with words. This is something special.
So true. Only artist that does this to me.
seriously, it's so beautiful
Ed sheeran though 🙄🤣🤣
he should be up there with the greats, so underrated, also he can sing those super high tones and then switch to incredible lows. A musical beast.
re: Staves.
The Staves bring a magic to this song, which is beyond everything i ever heard of
I was at this gig and it was one of the spine tingling jaw dropping mesmerising audience silencing moments and while I'll never forget it, it is nice to relive it years later
My goodness...That was heartbreakingly beautiful. It is pretty hard to get through the whole thing without shedding a few tears. The Staves add so many gorgeous layers to the original song.
i broke into tears when they sang.....

My favorite artists - this is what I imagine heaven to be .
My favorite bon iver song with my favorite female trio... I’m in absolute heaven
Sweet jesus. The ultimate version, and the crowd showed the proper restraint as well. Thanks so much for recording and uploading, really happy that I can watch this.
mschmidler I also love how the crowd showed proper restraint too!

It is absolutely better. I wish I could buy this version.
The Staves make this work.
❤❤❤❤That is the magic of live music it’s gonna be different every time and always is the best version.
That was incredible, goosebumps when the staves do the solo , just perfect, must have been a out of body experience to be there

Dude, I was not expecting to cry at work today. Thanks a lot! Never heard of The Staves before, but when she came in with the verse by herself, whoo weee! That got me good.

All 4 of those voices blend and harmonize together SO well! Ahhhh, I can't get over it :)
First time listening to this I don't know who they are it is so beautiful it left me speechless.
Crazy to get a full video of the greatest performance of a song of all time
One of the best live performances of one of Bon Iver's best songs. Can some one please explain to me how 22 people disliked this video? Though in a wonderfully ironic fashion, that's the perfect number for Bon Iver. Now if only we can a get a million likes ; )
Blimey, this has had me in tears....absolutely gorgeous. I didn't think the track could get any better......aaaaahhh....pure beauty x
7 days after the cancellation of his tour and I still feel like someone ripped my heart out.
7 years since this performance was uploaded and I‘m still not over it but that’s okay with me.

not in the slightest ❤️
Still going strong

So great. 'Austin to Boston' is where I found The Staves...
1:07 song starts
3:38 The Staves
This my excavation and today is Qumran
Everything that happens is from now on
This is pouring rain
This is paralyzed
I keep throwing it down two-hundred at a time
It's hard to find it when you knew it
When your money's gone
And you're drunk as hell
On your back with your racks as the stacks are your load
In the back and the racks and the stacks of your load
In the back with your racks and you're un-stacking your load
Well I've been twisting to the sun and the moon
I needed to replace
The fountain in the front yard is rusted out
All my love was down
In a frozen ground
There's a black crow sitting across from me
His wiry legs are crossed
He is dangling my keys, he even fakes a toss
Whatever could it be
That has brought me to this loss?
On your back with your racks as the stacks are your load
In the back and the racks and the stacks of your load
In the back with your racks and you're un-stacking your load

Your love will be
Safe with me

Hahaha, fair enough!
So captivating. A new adulation for music.
At last, a positive balding role-model.
