The famous sub-chief of Shinsengumi called the “devil” is Hijikata Toshizō. He has a really cool and strong image, right? But did you know that there is actually a surprising side to him of being quite narcissistic? As depicted in anime and manga, the real-life Hijikata was also handsome and very popular among the geiko in Kyoto. But the problem is that he gathered the love letters he received from the ladies, and sent them to his hometown to show them off. That’s not it. Hijikata’s hobby was writing poetry, so he even included some poems along with the letters. "Should I forget my oath to fight for this country, all because of the girls." He actually had a fiancé waiting for his return in his hometown, and I don’t even want to imagine what she felt when she read these letters and poems. He deliberately compiled a booklet of his other poems (and left it for future generations to read). Pleasant surprise to see Hakuouki Hijikata in this video. I know some of his poems made it into the musical adaptations of the series, and his bad haiku skills are usually treated as a source of comedy, but on the other hand, we're still aware of his poetry 150 years later, right?

I think the main reason why he send his fiancé those love letters is to show that he is not playing around with the other girls in Kyoto. Depend on the state of the love letters that he send, he might send them unopened to show he has no interest in Kyoto girls and let his fiancé sort them out just in case some of them are actually important letters mistaken as love letters. Those poems that he send together with the love letters, bad as they were, are probably meant to reassure her.

I've only seen Hijikata Toshizō in two animes-Gintama and Bucchigire-and both of them were the furthest thing from a narcissist. Hijikata Toshiro from Gintama was a mayonnaise lover whose popularity was stained and coloured with mayonnaise,whereas the Hijikata Toshizō from bucchigire was an assassin who was recruited into playing the role of a 替え玉(kaedama, substitute) for the original one that'd died during the storyline. I think it's nice that people don't adapt everything about someone when they base their characters off of them.
