Finally got to ride this. Opening day this year. Absolutely love this, it's so smooth and fun. Not the kind of coaster that terrifies people. This just makes everyone happy.
I am a middle teacher of science and engineering in Florida. I teach an elective called "Theme Park Engineering". In my research for my class, I found Knoebels. I presented all the construction videos for the Flying Turns in my class. We were so sad to see the problems that this ride had getting open. It was like 7 or 8 years until it was completed. I personally was smitten by everything I saw about this park. I eventually got there, and Knoebels did not disappoint. Free parking, free admission and good food and great rides. I am very proud of the job that they do.
To build something "first time ever" (this case wood instead of steel) always is an acheivement. I know that in case of a bob, the ride pattern is not 100% predictable, as it depends on the total load and the spread of that load. The ride must be designed to withstand the most extreme different cases, from running empty, to running with all seats taken by 120 kg riders, to heavy riders in front and superlight in the back or the other way around.... NOT being on track, makes the design much of a trial and error process ! :-)
I live in Pennsylvania and I go here every year in May & September! Truly an amazing place to go! I love camping, the food, and the amazing rides!!!! It is my family’s tradition and most of all the way everyone treats you! 🎢🎡🎠
There was the original it was at Euclid Beach Park in Cleveland, Ohio. It closed in 1969. Called the Flying Turns.Good to see this awesome type ride being preserved.
This is actually a faithful reproduction of the original, built from scratch between 2006-2013. The reason it took so long is that Knoebels wanted to make sure that everything was perfect and safe.
It's worth noting that Knoebels has NO admission or parking fees. You pay per ride (I think this ride is about $3 per person), the food prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is awesome. Also has one of the best wooden coasters in the world.
Unfortunately I don't see myself traving outside of country borders anytime soon so, this is probably not something I'll ever be able to experience myself even though I could not only afford to do it but would also really want to ride the rides there.
@@SashaMasonVR I get that and its certainly not worth the trip from Germany. But if you happen to be in the Allentown PA area for some reasons its only an hour drive...
@@jlinder9646 Whether it's worth the trip or not is kinda debatable to be honest. My problem is that I just don't feel comfortable at all leaving the country. Not even to switzerland or france, both of which are just a few hours of driving away from me. At least this channel exists so see all the awesome stuff that I won't ever visit myself.
I have been fortunate enough to have ridden two of the original Flying Turns rides, one at Riverview Park in Chicago and the other at Coney Island, both now long gone. This ride perfectly duplicates the original experience.
Coney Island? Unless you went when you were very, very young at the time, I'm thinking you are mistaken. Steeplechase Amusment Park (Coney Island) had a Flying Turns that was taken out of commission in 1939 by a fire. I'm wondering if you are thinking of the Coney Island Bobsled which was somewhat similar?
I’ve gone every year since I was born and I’ve had so many memories coming back every year watching this ride progress and Always asking when it would be up. Once it was up the lines were long so I was not able to get my chance but I eventually got on it was chill and out of this world ride. Knoebels is a great park with good prices and you can bring your dogs
I rode this Flying Turns the day of the huge craft sale. Well worth the wait in line. It's not like any coaster you'll be on anywhere. It's a very smooth ride and won't scare the life out of you. Definitely give it a try if you're not a big fan of the traditional coasters!
Glad your reviewing this I literally live 10 minutes away from knoebels in Danville pa so I’m there all the time in the summer cuz there tickets you can you have forever they don’t expire which is why I go all the time and free admission,I like this coaster the thing is the line is usually really long so it’s not always my favorite my favorite coaster there is the Phoenix! I love the first seat you fly out of it I try to go there before schools open up and on a cloudy day you can ride it nonstop! However the stratosphere I’m terrified on that! Lol! Glad you reviewed this!
One of the most awesome roller coasters. If only I lived in Pennsylvania! Of all of the coasters of its kind left, this is the only wooden bobsled coaster left in the world.
When I was in high school they had one of the original Flying Turns, it went up the hill inside a long tunnel. It only had one lift and the cars were replaced once from more standard ones to sort of deco designed versions. Unfortunately when I was in College in the early 60s the Highlands Amusement Park burned and the ride was gone forever. I think I read it was one of three of the original designs. It was an usual and fun ride but I preferred the Comet Roller Coaster in the same park.
Heck yeah I want to ride! Anything "free" moving like this is a blast, that randomness and g-induced motion (not to mention the question of "will this go out of control?") is exhilarating. :) Also, neat to see the a behind the scenes capture of Robb's on-the-move recording technique! ;)
Yep weight I saw.. I'm 275 tbh and was like well guess I ain't getting on that because if I'm not mistaking 400lbs per ride didn't wanna be the only one on.. oh well. Impulse was a good experience tho 😏😀
Because it was a PITA to build. It took Knoebels TEN YEARS to build this thing because there was no plans left for the originals and trying to build this without plans and get it up to modern safety standards was extremely difficult from an engineering stand point, they literally went through THREE different train designs until they had GCI come in to help design the current ones. The only reason they didnt give up is because this ride was a labor of love, the owner of Knoebels rode the original at Euclid Beach and he really wanted to revive it no matter the cost.
I miss Knoebel's. I'm Pennsylvania born and raised but now live in Florida. Our theme parks here (yes I'm including Disney) can't hold a candle to Pennsy's parks. Dorney/wildwater, Knoebel's, Hershey, Great Adventure, 6 Flags America in MD, and Kennywood.
Agreed... I'm from Jersey and I have been going to Knoebel's every year growing up with family, friends, and scouts and I love it more then Disney World. I joined the Navy and the roughest part of this past summer was not going to Knoebel's for the first time in my life. So much love and enthusiasm for this wonderful park! Love it!
If you look closely, you'll see that the cars have wheels on their sides. As the bobsleigh track narrows back into side-friction roller coaster track, guide rails move in to direct the trains into the correct path and those wheels make that possible.

Not long nor high. But wicked cool. Well worth a trip to this gem in the mountains of PA.
A few of those banked turns after the 2nd lift hill look pretty gnarly!
There was also a flying turns coaster at Euclid Beach park outside Cleveland. Taken down when the park closed.
Took 7.5yrs to build and refine. I think they did a pretty good job on it.
Very cool 😎 This reminds of back in the 80’s they had a ride similar at Opryland before it closed. It wasn’t wooden though but, same concept.
I have rode it. Its in Pennsylvania. I live 30 minutes away from this park.

I want to ride this but hate wooden roller coasters because they're too jerky. Does this one have that issue ?
No I've rode it it's a really smooth ride especially on the bobsled bits
This is the smoothest bobsled Ive ever ridden, and I have ridden both the Mack and Intamin ones.
Just a little jerk at the base of the first lift hill. Other than that, Flying Turns is glass-smooth.
