The one where I lived burned down. It was an early Sunday morning and before they were about to open, one of the neon signs in the back had a short circuit. No one died, but two firefighters were injured from heat exhaustion. There was a picture of one of their visors completely bubbled The place is now a TJ Maxx
Before Christmas, I heard a priest start a sermon with, "Once upon a time there was a box of Christmas decorations sitting in McCrory's, which is a step below Caldor, which is a step below Woolworths..."
Great chain, I owned retail stores in San Diego county and bought merchandise from Mcory stores. All mdse was pre priced and easy to stock. They treated my stores like company stores. I really miss those times in the 80's and 90's.
I vaguely remember McCroy’s growing up in the 80’s my mom would take me and my brother there on Saturday mornings. It totally sucked. The store was dimly lit and smelly with wooden floors. It was in this freezing cold old drafty building downtown. We hated it because it only sold clothes and had no toys or candy. I don’t even know how to get there today. This was maybe 1984 or 85.
The one we had here lasted past 1994. And I remember discovering the movie "Oasis of the Zombies" on a vhs tape sold there. The cover art freaked me out a little, lol.
I remember playing Altered Beast there as a kid. We'd buy all those animal books that came with those cool stickers. The one near my house had a cafe in it, and I specifically remember their broccoli and cheese soup was very good. I also remember hearing Alan Parsons Project "Eye in the sky" there as a little kid as my mom pushed me in the buggy. We bought "mad balls" and all sorts of toys there... Thank you for making this video!
Hi there it's me lol. I grew up with McCrory's on Main St. and a half a block up was Newberry's. Both stores had a short order lunch counter and a "basement" level that sold pets and supplies. Neighboring towns had Murphy's and Woolworths.
@@EricCProductions76 So my Main St was Chambersburg, PA. The surrounding towns I mentioned were Shippensburg, Waynesboro and Greencastle PA if that helps in any documentation.
@@EricCProductions76 Nah I already lived the memory of Main St through growing up and my parents & grandparents relating memories. Actually I know more than the average resident. I've explored remnants of tunnels that link many buildings as a kid from my grandfather's house. He ran a violin/string repair shop. Across the street was a big parking lot by the Conococheague Creek and an old water wheel. People don't know that under that parking lot are Indian caves that settlers used as wine cellars. Chambersburg is an odd town with rich history. Look up the Burning of Chambersburg.
Hey I thought of some stores if you haven't done them already... Clover, Two Guys, Kings, Town & Country, D.E. Jones, Camelot Music, Pappy's Pizza, The Red Barn restaurant. Lol my memory remembers so much! Thank you for making these wonderful videos and happy 2022!
Happy 2022 to you too. Thank you for your suggestions. I will look them up and put them on my list. Also, I did Two Guys: ruclips.net/video/tyeiAftO44o/видео.html
I wonder if some wealthy entrepreneurs or current business revised the five and dime store format with candy counters and lunch counters if it wouldn't be successful. Dollar General or Family Dollar could easily try it. Older folks would go out of nostalgia and to younger people it would be a new concept in retail. Clothing fashions sometimes come back so why not retailing?
I don't see how McCrory's fell into such bad times and folded. When today, similar structured chains like Dollar General, Dollar Tree, and Family Dollar are building stores like gangbusters. Dollar General stores are like mushrooms in my area, seemingly popping up overnight in rural out of the way locations. The last McCrory's store I remember being open near my home was back in the mid-80s at the Carolina Mall in Concord, NC. My grandmother was quite fond of shopping there.
Lex, the issue at McCrory Stores, was Meshulam Riklis, the owner. He bought up (takeovers) many small to mid chains, Newberrys, GC Murphy, TG&Y, Silvers, etc. and built a amazing business serving smaller towns and cities, and a low end demographic. Good items, great pricing, located in the right place. He was a genius at leveraging money, even before it became popular. Riklis went thru lots of problems, like suits from other companies, problems with this casino in Vegas, marriage problems with Pia Zadora, etc. He began selling the assets of the companies, transferring money and purchases of LOTS of "gifts' to hospitals, politicians, etc in Israel (where he eventually retired, lived and died in 2019). He literally stole the money from the company, closed it, left the country and then.... died. I will tell you..... when I worked for them for many years, it was a GREAT job. I installed many small shops and businesses in some of our older stores and the company made ENORMOUS profits from them. It was a Win Win for the vendors and McCrory's. I loved the job. But, they planned the destruction of a great company, and let a bunch of mistakes and poor upper mgmt destroy their markets and business. It was AMAZING while it lasted.
@@dialdude LOL, one of the first things I noticed about the McCrory’s store at the mall was the smell of mothballs as soon as you entered the store. For some reason they always kept a large shelf full of them at the entrance. I can also remember the impeccably spotless condition of the aisles. Everything was kept in order and the floors were swept and buffed clean as a whistle. There was none of that feeling like you were in a jungle of clutter and disorganization like you get with a Dollar General. I miss that touch of self pride merchants use to have in their stores.
My god that is what you call a rapid expansion and acquisition no wounder why they went into bankruptcy in 1982. Still though its good to here that not all stores were closed and manage to stay open till 2001. As always great video and if its possible could I suggest those Jupiter stores that you mentioned in the video for a future topic?
My Mom broke water in their diner and the McCrory’s employee said “Lady, you’re not having that baby here!” Lol so this place was special to me ❤
This was my first job, so this video brought back a lot of memories. Thanks.

We also once had a People's Drug that had a lunch counter. It was replaced by White Shield.

I miss McCrory's
The McCrory's I used to go to had the best fried chicken I've ever had, to this day I'm still chasing that taste.
The one we had here lasted past 1994. And I remember discovering the movie "Oasis of the Zombies" on a vhs tape sold there. The cover art freaked me out a little, lol.
My hometown had two McCrory stores.
I remember F.W. Woolworth and their sister store Woolco

Well done and informative! I remember these stores and so sorry they are a thing of the past. One critique though, Dubois is pronounced Dew-Boyz
You are correct. Thanks for pointing that out. Thanks for watching
So basically Target and Walmart put them out of business. Sucks because these older stores had soul. Something Walmart obviously completely lacks.
I would agree with you
