let's be real and clarify what happened, it's cuz he had been playing the puck in midair so the opponent player in fact did pull on him, but if that wasn't the case that shirt pull was obvious and I'd think he wanted the call, avoiding guilty conscious is indeed commendable but it's not like he just threw a penalty away for no reason cuz he's a saint of character.

I remember Wayne Gretzky once successfully arguing against an icing call against his team, and the commentators noted that only Gretzky could do that.
So I guess the moral of the story is that even before breaking Gretzky's goal scoring record, Ovechkin has already achieved Gretzky levels of respect.

It's called not wanting easy calls, when you don't need them. Do this show, and refs are more likely to believe you in the future. Use that to your advantage, when you need penalties against the other team. It's an old tactic, not utilized by many young players. Also, we don't need hockey to turn into, football/soccer.

This is y hockey is the best sport in the world!!! Not only is it the fastest and most exciting sport but the majority of the players r classy stand up dudes that show incredible sportsmanship all the time! Any time a player is interviewed you'll NEVER hear em say "I" it's always "we"!! And if a guy gets hurt the guys from both teams show him respect! And occasionally, like in this video, they'll tell the ref that the opposition doesn't deserve a penalty cuz what happened wasn't their opponents fault! These guys r pros that respect the game so much! They wanna play fair and try to beat their opponents when they r at their best!

It shows a great respect for the game and at the same time, as a referee next time you see Ovechkin get down and not getting up immediately you know he's not faking and the other dude deserves a penalty

True class act and shining example. Really dislike what seems to be more (younger) players falling too easily to get a penalty, leave that to soccer players.

What an absolute legend.... listen, I'm from Pittsburgh and will always kinda hate Ovi and the Caps, just because of the rivalry, but he's such a beast and uniquely talented scorer. How lucky are we to have gotten both he and Sid at the same time?

I love Ovie!!! He always looks so happy to be on the ice. Maybe that's why he's still scoring at a phenomenal rate at his age, his sheer enjoyment of being around the game.

He was easy to hate in the beginning, but things like this tell the bigger story.

First thing before I say this is Ovi is a class act and an all time great, I'm just saying just in general, for any player, it's a little easier to be classy in a preseason game if your roster spot is guaranteed and the result dosen't really matter.
