I loved listening to this but found the questions painful. Starting with a request for questions but resulting in five minute comment. I wish people would ask genuine questions not take that as an opportunity to show how clever they are personally. Great talk though.
Irak invasion and all external invasions of other countries and also the fight against diversity killed post modernism but from the ashes a new realism will revive, we need it to contend all those "purisms" in Europe and America, still we are diverse humans different and need to be recognized as that
Reality is death, pain, suffering. Without the miseries of life - reality would probably disappear into banality. Post modernity gained prominence in a banal period of history. Like the lines of Harry Lime in the Third Man - that went something like - 'in 500 years of war and feuding the Italians gave us Michael Angelo, Leonardo and the renaissance - whereas 5 centuries of peace and harmony in Switzerland - gave us the cuckoo clock' Not that the banality of the cuckoo clock is without its charms - however, in the face of the horrors of the early 21st century, post modernity is found wanting - tantamount to fiddling while Rome burns .
I think he said "can't" but it sounded as "can", given his italian accent. I speak portuguese and have noticed this kind of thing in my english speaking accent also.
@@huehuecoyotl2 no no, he indeed said Thomist... The joke is about the fact that Thomas Aquinus is one of the main Christian thinkers, while marxist thought is atheist by definition, so in theory it is the negation of thomism... then in Italy there is a whole bunch of people who manage to declare themselves both Marxists and Papists at the same time, hence the joke
That idiotic comment about string theory not leading to a single prediction. String theory has many predictions. It actually predicts everything we see in reality. But because string theory also predicts thing that go beyond what we can even know by empiricism, it is unclear exactly how correct string theory is. That's all. It's not the mathematical physics that's the problem, it's experiment.
since I don't understand anything of what you wrote ("Narrative fiction-non-fusion, nor fission, fusion of the ''presence of the thinker' and duty of pedant erudite motion narrowing Philosophy.") I simply assume that you are either not a competent speaker of english or a postmodernist.
I dont care what he is even talking about (i do), but I could just listen to his voice forever and ever as it is so soothing.
Requiescat in pace Umberto grazie!
Molto grazie, Eco !
this presentations shows how long a man must go in order to call for common sense in today's thought.
An American 'idea' reproduced 'on a French license' is so funny and yet so close to the truth it makes my head spin.
I love this man. He is my hero. What a great video. Reality is what kicks you in the ass. Umberto Eco is our new God. Amem.
No. Do not have gods, have logic, have science, and most of all: THINK.

Isn't that Hilary Putnam he's saying hi to at the beginning???
Putnam is also asking a question at the end!

philosophy is just for fun ;)
Better still ....the French gave us the guillotine and post modernism with the latter being responsible for far more deaths than the former.
Did he confuse Finnegans Wake with Madame Bovary?
I think so.

Sounds even older!

I believe he said "atomist", not Thomist.
