You're gonna need an ungodly amount of luxury balls to do so, so at least around 400 contests for a 95% chance, let's say 500, because you want to be safe since it's a full odds gen 3 shiny rayquaza, about 5 mins per contest, x 500 total contests is 2500 minutes, or a little under 2 days of non-stop grinding, if you win every single contest that is. I have a shiny rayquaza in a luxury ball. I used RNG manipulation for it. I had to try a couple of times. For people who don't know, you cannot encounter a shiny pokemon by soft resetting in Emerald. Step 3) Switch into a Shedinja with False Swipes and Protect (to block when Rayquaza uses fly, which is the only move that can affect Shedinja). Step 4) Get the Rayquaza to 1 HP and start throwing balls. There’s a trade off between being able to lower Rayquaza’s health and having to use paralysis instead of sleep. Paralysis only provides half the benefit of sleep, but lowered HP can provide up to 3x the catch rate, so theoretically, this method’s catch rate is 1.5x better at best. It is also better because the yawn method would have one turn without sleep applied after each yawn, whereas paralysis would never go away. The only issue is that I’m not sure how Outrage would act when the Pokemon is immune in gen 3. Since Fairy type doesn’t exist yet, it isn’t a common scenario. It’s possible that Rayquaza would still get confused, which would make this strategy fairly useless. Shedinja may still be a good pick, but without a way to prevent the confusion/self damage, it’s not really better than the snorlaxes. Regardless, Rayquaza would still be a ticking time bomb, since it will start struggling after it runs out of PP, though paralysis would help stall that a bit longer. If it were a newer generation, there are other tools that could help, such as skill swapping Rayquaza the harvest ability and tricking Rayquaza a leppa berry to prevent running out of PP. You could also use a persim berry to prevent confusion and some other method (such as heal block, imprison, or taunt) to prevent healing via rest, though since luxury balls are much easier to obtain in later generations, making the fight last longer is probably more important than increasing catch rate.
I’ve never found a shiny Rayquaza, let alone catch one in a luxury ball. However, I did catch a full hp Rayquaza in a premier ball and then another one in a timer ball when I replayed.
Yes, use a bulky pokemon that learns baton pass and defense curl, baton pass it to a compound eyes speed based butterfree with sleep powder so you can always get the first attack off and never miss putting it to sleep.
I went into the battle with rayquza forgetting to buy any balls. All I had was one premier ball. Guess who owns all their legendary pokemon in premier balls now.
Gen 9 was my first pokemon game, and even tho I had absolutely no idea what they were, I used Luxury Balls to capture all the Beast of Ruin. Or whatever they're called. Aesthetically divine if I may say so
Level 100 smeargle with spore, trick, false swipe and swords dance/flash + leftovers. Get 12 X speeds + 12 X defenses and 12 X attacks if you got flash instead of swords dance. You’re also gonna need like 30 leppa berries lol. Put Rayquaza to sleep on the first turn then spam X items (speeds -> defense -> attack) and keep putting Rayquaza back to sleep when it wakes up. Once you reach max stat buffs, spam flash until Rayquaza is -6 accuracy. Use false swipe to get him to 1hp and spam balls until you catch him or has 1 pp left. Use trick to give him the leftovers and keep throwing balls until you hopefully catch it. I’d recommend around 250 just to be safe.
Maybe they’ll add pokeball swapping to future games or something. They could also add dyeing or other customisations to Pokéballs if players want to colour match them
There is a cloning glitch in Pokémon Emerald get one luxury ball and give it to Pokémon. Do the cloning glitch at Battle Frontier no action reply needed. Trade between two systems if you have to get the luxury ball early.
Trick leppa berry grumpig on with leftovers, substitute, protect, Rest to PP stall rayquaza down so that leppa berry only works on Rayquaza’s own rest and because its asleep you can try and catch it. Bulky ghost types like dusclops can also do this decently well
The only thing that I could think of that might be more effective would be to have a few bug Pokemon with sleep Spore, stun Spore, and other similar moves/ abilities. Yawn is dangerous in many cases because the longer the fight goes on especially when they have more than one turn to use moves the more likely it is to either KO itself through confusion or run out of PP. Either way Yawn also does not have the same length of sleep time as other moves. These were things unique to Ruby/Sapphire/emerald. Though not not completely unique to all series.
Id use one slot for a trick user to slip leftovers or shellbell into raquazas pocket. Minimize chance of knocking himself out, then just unload balls while he sleeps

You could also use a persim berry to prevent confusion and some other method (such as heal block, imprison, or taunt) to prevent healing via rest, though since luxury balls are much easier to obtain in later generations, making the fight last longer is probably more important than increasing catch rate.
Ah yes the full team of tanky snorlax......The unga Bunga team XD
I’ve never found a shiny Rayquaza, let alone catch one in a luxury ball. However, I did catch a full hp Rayquaza in a premier ball and then another one in a timer ball when I replayed.
Bro I’ve never noticed the similarities between shiny rayquaza and the lux ball
He isn’t scared of the odds,
The odds are scared of him💀
Im super glad my younger self’s brain noticed the color match on the luxury ball and Shiny Rayquaza when they found a shiny in Ultra Moon.
That is so bizarre. I remember having a lot of Luxury balls in gen 3, I didn’t realize how rare they were.
Last night, I caught a miraidon in a luxury ball
When I was younger I would only use the pokeball because I thought it was a big flex to have caught all Pokemon in a basic ball, I still do this
Dynamax adventures: hold my beer 🍺
I always thought once they're our pokemon and have some friendship built up, we should be able to switch out their pokeball
I miss the contests I was literally thinking about them the other day. They 100% need to bring them back
In pokemon black v2, I caught a Zekrom in a Luxury ball, first ball, and he wasn't even asleep
Never thought I'd see the day when pokemon challenges became "can you CATCH a POKEMON in a POKEBALL??"
a pokeball with such a scarce supply is pretty much a challenge on its own. i believe the dive ball in the gen 4 games have similair problems
@Strashky I used Dive on Lugia in HG. Not fun to transfer so much forward.
Guess who owns all their legendary pokemon in premier balls now.
my most memorable momet in life was catching a reshiram first turn with a timer ball
One day I decided, "wouldn't it be funny if I just captured it with a regular ball first turn" and... it did....
For some reason ever since Gen 7, I would get a shiny Rayquaza in each game.
It's one of those weird reoccurring shinys that everybody has.
Back in gen 3, I captured Rayquaza in full health with a pokeball after it used rest lol
One of impossibly satisfying pokemon experience ngl
I got one back in the past. I remember that I replayed the game about 20 times to grind luxury balls not knowing you can get them at contests.
Never forget the umbreon with sand attack
Crazy? I was crazy once. They locked me in a room. A rubber room. A rubber room with rats. And rats make me CRAZY!
Me with level 100 blaziken: dont test my patience Rayquaza
As someone who catches every shiny (especially legendaries) in a premier ball, I relate to this feeling.
Ethan the kinda guy to say “bad morning” when he’s in a foul mood
I caught Kyurem with Luxury Ball
I think I saw a Rayquaza working at a gas station in NY once...
Cares about choosing Pokéballs based on color coordination? You have a new follower, my good sir.
Glad to see I’m not the only one! If you liked this short I actually did a full length video on this subject over on my main channel
Me with an ancient pokeball:ah shit
To be a shiny Ray in a Luxury Ball is like living in a house that looks like you.
I remember in Emerald, I wasn’t about to use a master ball on Latias. I wasn’t really worried about catching it either and I threw a regular poke ball just for the heck of it. Caught. I felt like we were meant to be so I moved her all the way up to black version along my adventures. Idk what happened to that copy of the game but I’ll never forget you Latias!
Shiny rayquaza x luxary ball might be the best flex combo ever
