  • In the late 17th century, Billingsley Point was home to the last known settlement of Patuxent and Mattaponi people -- and the last known Native American settlement in the Jug Bay region. During the Maryland Historical Trust's 50th annual archaeology field session, a crew of citizen archeologists excavated a portion of the field in the hopes of finding physical traces of this important historical site, labeled on a colonial map from 1670 as "Wighkawamecq."
