Eric Gales is a generational talent. His command of his instrument and his combination of raw technical prowess and soulfulness is almost unbelievable. I'm very impressed with your ability to pick up on small details in his playing on first watch. Not easy to do at all.
@@TimothyLafrenierecheck him out when he was a teen on the original Arsenio Hall show with his own band. Brother was his bassist. A a trio band and he sat in with the house band. He’s been around about 30? Yrs or so. Plus, his other brother Little Jimmy King another lefty all the brothers are, named after Albert king. He was his godfather passed at 27? Eric has persisted through a lot and never really got the accolades he deserves. Neither has Chris Duarte, Mato Nanji from Indigenous, Jonny Lang etc.
Eric Gales was quite literally made to create and play music. Much like legendary bassist Victor Wooten, his older brother taught him at an early age. So much so that Eric plays left-handed with a true right-handed guitar upside down even tho Eric himself is actually right-handed. Eric’s brother is left-handed and Eric said he never even knew he was playing “left-handed” because that’s just how he learned from the beginning. Victor Wooten has a great Tedtalk about music being a language and how he was a kid learning to speak with his voice as well as his instrument. It’s like the music was engrained into his vocabulary. He can pull out any note or phrase he wants at any given time. Much like a person can seamlessly express their thoughts with words, the best musicians can do the same with their music. It comes out naturally and in an instant.
*Meditation* is one of my favs of Cory's. The way it steadily builds intensity over a relatively simple progression does end up being meditative and almost spiritual. I've gotten emotional on more than one occasion listening to it. Not least when I saw him live back in November.
Gales is unreal….absolutely out of this world, un-understably good. Saw him in December and going to see him in Nashville Feb 28 again……it’s just hard to make sense of his talent
Dig this (first off thanks man you're amazing!) I saw Eric Gales headline the Mississippi Valley Bluesfest a couple years ago. He was vigorously fast pacing in a circle like kids playing ring-a-round the rosie, and he kept building his solo up so much (I mean 1,000% goosebump energy here) that the only thing he could possibly do to release the songs energy was to violently punch the open guitar strings while screaming as loud as he could..."AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" for what felt like eternity and I immediately started weeping like I've never wept before. My body couldn't handle the release of the energy and it was the only natural reaction. This was 4 minutes into the concert. From all my live shows nobody executed tension and release like the E Street Band but they take a distant back seat to our brother Eric. Thanks again and keep going Michael!!!!! Bret
Whhhhhaaaaaaat on Earth did I just watch!?!?! 🤯. I have tickets to Gales April 9th... this here video has made me VERY VERY EXCITED!!! Great response Palmisano!! a very enjoyable episode. Holy Shit.. I was cheering out loud!!! 🎸🎸🎸🎸
Yeah, I've tried to figure out Eric by watching him. The backwards/upside down thing screws me up too. I love his chord inversions as well. He does a lot of chords on the bass strings. His hands are so huge that he has totally figured out his own style. He is truly an inspiration. I always enjoy your videos Michael.
Saw him 3 times at Byron Blues, including the massive guitar break with Beth Hart's Rather Go Blind. His chords are so delicious and then he takes you on a roller-coaster ride all round the fret-board. And so funky. Was wondering what I would do after Prince. Wonder no more,
WOWOW What Blows me away is how much Feeling is in that!! Usually when people just speed across the fret board its mostly technique, speed, and showoff manship ! With him, no sir, all feeling too. WOW! Love it!! Never felt somone attack the fret board with that kind of speed while keeping all the emotion and feeling!
I love that you’re doing this video! I was at the Raleigh show and couldn’t get the modal changes in real time. I was in awe for 2.5 hours straight. Love your stuff.
Eric Gales is from another planet. I can't tell here but, whenever I've seen him, he plays COMPLETELY inverted. The strings are going from high to low. I can't even begin to wrap my head around that. And I remember his first album, way back when he dressed like Jimi Hendrix and all.
Yup! Gales plays a true right-handed guitar upside down. He learned at a very young age from his older brother who was actually left-handed while Eric is not. Eric never knew he was playing upside down and left-handed until much later once his style was already engrained into his muscle memory No harm no foul lol Plus I’m sure he can get different sounds and chord shapes that are not possible for right-handed players, along with his giant hands
To me, Gales is always more of a Hendrix-type of feel player. But he also has that Johnson-Bonamassa quintuplets thing going on! Man, that is sooooooo cooool !! Love it so much. Also, thank you so much, Michael, for promoting such a great guitar moment. Always inspiring and enjoyable to watch your videos.
I’m sure you’ve already seen it but Gales and Bonamassa played together before and have some videos of their guitar duels here on RUclips. Eric definitely has more of an experimental and raw styles to go with his playing while Bonamassa is super clean and technical. It’s great to see both guys bouncing ideas off each other in real time as they take turns improvising
He’s been around for decades so it’s rightly deserved. He should be even bigger but people these days ignore talent over marketability more times than not
Yes Jake he is also known for covering Hendrix and Blue Oyster Cult and often does one or more at his live gigs. He also has amazing signature amps and guitars worth checking out . Great rig rundown too
Loved this, Michael. I found out about Eric through an article in Guitar World back in '92, I believe it was. His Picture of a Thousand Faces album was out. I picked it up, and have been a fan ever since. I had the incredible good fortune to see him in a little bar in Burlington, NC not to far from my home. He was home in Greensboro off the road that weekend and picked up a gig at this bar. I stood 3 feet in front of him and watched him play all night. It was a religious experience. He's super versed in the school of Hendrix, then he'll hit you with some Vernon Reid type shred, then to really mess your head up, he'll throw in some jazz chords and licks too. But it all meshes together effortlessly in a way that is totally his style. I think the thing that struck me the most about his playing was his economy of motion. It looks like he is barely moving his fingers. It makes you wonder where all that sound is coming from. And then after the show, I met him and his wife LaDonna. She was selling his latest CD. He signed it for me and took a photo. They are the sweetest people. I'll tell you, if you ever get a chance to see Eric in a small club, do not hesitate! I'll remember that night for the rest of my days!
First time i've ever heard of Cory Wong, but im a massive fan of Gales. I had the honor of seeing him with Beth Hart several years back. It was like a religious experience.

He is a fantastic bass player as well. Thank you Michael for such a great experience each time I tune in. You allways just go for it!!

Gales is amazing!! Someone needs to do an in-depth video of his picking style!! Very unorthodox, besides being a true lefty, Eric uses a pick between his thumb and forefinger, and also picks with his additional fingers with his picking hand.

Eric Gales mixes phrases and licks from Eric Johnson, Carlos Santana and bends from Bonamassa styles plus his own style, and then: you really cannot teach how he plays
He plays guitar backwards and upside down. I figure it would require mirrors and a projection screen just to view him playing in a conventional manner. Add to that the fact that he's basically the blues version of Steve Vai, so any chance of playing like him, fughetaboutit! LOL
If you cover The Dooo’s latest double guitar video, his solo at 9:32 absolutely shreds in a weird way like I’m not sure why it’s so great. You could capitalize on his huge audience if you make a video on it!

New to the channel! Love your content! Are you planning on a react/breakdown of "Jason Richardson - Tendinitis" if you haven't done so? Just wondering! Keep up the amazing work!
I thought he meant "Meditation" by Jobim...not so much lol
Sonny Thompson holding down the low end !
Isn’t he using the hexa tonic scale?
Michael, just flip your guitar upside-down, and backwards and you'll have-it...👋😏👍
Thing I love mostly about your vids are your chops at the start. You're a monster player .
Does anyone else evoke emotions like Eric gales does? And don’t feel bad Michael, I play upside down lefty and still can’t learn him by watching lol
Eric has great tone cutting through on this video.
Eric Gales is never boring. Ever.
Oh yeah thank you again Michael
You met the stage end boss
Eric Gales mixes phrases and licks from Eric Johnson, Carlos Santana and bends from Bonamassa styles plus his own style, and then: you really cannot teach how he plays
Took a couple decades to realize there was an Eric Gale and an Eric Gales
and both Erics are bad bad men.
Was there. Can confirm.
At 11:20, MP loses his mind
Can’t not hear Snarky Puppy when the band comes in.. 🤔
I think the teacher meant to say bends of Albert King instead of Albert Collins …
What else can you say but pure in the zone electricity
He plays guitar backwards and upside down. I figure it would require mirrors and a projection screen just to view him playing in a conventional manner. Add to that the fact that he's basically the blues version of Steve Vai, so any chance of playing like him, fughetaboutit! LOL
Totally. Such a mindbender.
If you cover The Dooo’s latest double guitar video, his solo at 9:32 absolutely shreds in a weird way like I’m not sure why it’s so great. You could capitalize on his huge audience if you make a video on it!
