In Alaska
there was a native tribe that built small colorfull little houses over their graves. The homes were for their souls. They were called Spirit House. Several American Indian tribes built these houses also.

It would rather be buried, with a couple fruit trees over my grave. So my body can nourish the trees. And the fruit is used to feed those in need.

What’s the difference between this structure and a mausoleum? They are both enclosed structure with the only difference is one holds the dead above while this holds the dead below ground.

In Canada many of the first nations people, in particular the Cree built small houses over the graves of their loved ones.

This is a new one for me and I am 73. I grew up in Arkansas and now live in Southern Missouri but I have never even heard of a house/shelter built to cover graves. Very interesting! I’m going with the idea that his first memories were of riding in a wagon pulled by oxen (as was common back then) as his parents traveled looking for a new home. At the end of his life he wanted to go out the same way

That is definitely different. I have saw a video that was filmed in West Virginia where many of the graves had small roof 's over them. In eastern Kentucky I know where 2 graveyards are with tiny houses over graves,some have 7 or 8 graves in them

I have seen the smaller grave shelters. This is the largest I've seen...quite unique I think. Different strokes for different folks,very interesting. So put Pops in his easy chair,I get tired,too. Watching from up in KY 😊 stay well.

It looks like someone added a metal roof, that doesn't look that old. I wonder why he didn't want his grave to get wet. I wonder if he knew that would mean no grass, or that within a few years it would be difficult to have visitors, etc. Did it say anything about who else, family members, was buried inside there?

They are common here in Eastern Ky , they often have chairs for the living to sit in to visit their loved ones , they have roofs over them to keep them dry and there homes for the families

We have a small one built over 2 graves in a cemetery I serve on the board for.
I was told that the family emigrated to SW Missouri, and along the way, the family was trying to cross the flooded Ohio River. They lost some family members to drowning. This couple wanted their graves to be covered by one of these structures so they wouldn't get wet. They were terrified of water.

I live near this and never knew anything about it. There is a cool overgrown plantation cemetery in Hickman county called Graham Cemetery that has a huge statue marker that your audience would probably like to see. Brring a weed eater if u go

As a funerary practice oxen-drawn funeral carts or wagons were used in ancient Egypt, Japan and China. Probably other places too. I’ve never seen a grave house that large.

In eastern Oklahoma one can find individual wooden huts over a gravesite. The local native Americans use this system to cover their loved ones. Over time one will find items placed in or around the grave, much like one will find flowers on top of graves. It is a bit different from what most people are used to but it shows just how much this group of Native Americans loved and cared for the deceased.

I know of A House in Wisconsin where the family ,has a house for the dead,when a family member dies ,they take them to this house ,dress them,set them up ,to the table,as tho they are still alive.for how many days ,I don't know.

I am a Pevahouse from Perry County where Linden is. Notice my spelling, in studying my family there are 4 or 5 spellings of it. I have never heard of a grave house. My brother and I spent a lot of time in the woods and never found one.

If you are heading into Fayetteville TN, coming south on Hwy 431 entering town, there was/is a cementary on the left hand side of the road. Several years ago, about 12-15 years ago, they built a house OVER the cementary. Headstones and all. I don't think they moved the bodies but don't hold me to that. I always found that very strange. Its a small white house and its still there.
