Real, dead bugs really do not miss their wings. Isn't it nice that parts of them still live on? Think of it as a transplant, someone/died so someone else could live on. Wonderful tutorial. Straight to the point and easy to follow. Really enjoyed it!
I'm not a huge fan of the glitter + beads + picture frame corner but I still love this! I think I'd do this with just the wings, wire, liquid clay, gloss, and a hint of mica powder. But this is just *personal preference* and is also based on how I'd want to customize a fairy doll, so please don't hate on this comment.
No, I get it completely. I kinda prefer the simple look as well. Sometimes the glitter wings complement a particularly fancy fairy though. Loved your comment. Thanks.
Thank you kindly, Chelsea. It became a 'must do' when my daughters ran up to me holding the dead cicada and said, "look what we found, can you use it for your fairy stuff?" Yes, most certainly, what a find! Cicadas are amazing creatures.
It's good to hear the instructions are understandable... sometimes I confuse myself thinking too hard about it. I've got to step away from it for awhile, so it's nice to get feedback on that. Thanks bearynice.
Another medium that's easy to work with & requires less materials is UV resin. you just need a cheat uv flashlight for it to cure. Also, you don't have buy transparencies, you can just use wrapping or packaging plastic.
I honestly think it's both neat and gross to use actual cicada wings. I just think bugs are gross. Buy that's a real interesting way to recycle. And I don't understand why people are getting so uppity about it because people wear shark teeth, bug encased in amber or resin, and fossil, shells from sea creature (yes that's apart of the animal), wear and collect fossils, and display dead butterflies literally ALL THE TIME. So don't get on your high horse when it's basically a common place practice that's the norm.
I suppose the problem with it would be the baking step, you'd need a big enough oven. You'd also need a big enough transparency of the wings, which would be difficult to come by. But theoretically, you could do it if you could overcome those obstacles. It'd sure be cool.
hello! I’m planning on making a necklace for my grandma with this tutorial, however i was wondering what type of paper you use to print out the wings if actual insect wings aren’t an option? thank you!
Depending on what kind of printer you have, but I found OHP transparency paper to work with my inkjet printer. I hope your grandma loves her handmade necklace. Thanks for watching!
They are lovely! But i have a question, if i print transparent wings, i would imagine they're printed in acetate, even with the liquid clay all over it, wouldn't it melt when in the oven?
Hi Norangel, great question. I am always pleasantly surprised how many things I can put in the oven with my clay and it works out. This is one of those things... no, it hasn't melted for me yet. Perhaps keep a close eye on your project in the oven at first, but I've never experienced that problem so I do think it'll work well for you.
CertainlyCaroline I'm glad to know it works, I will definitely try it out then!, thank you very much for your answer Caroline, your videos and your answers to other comments have helped me a lot.
Hi Sara, Thanks for your awesome questions. I stored a cicada wing in my craft room for about 6 months, then I used it for a craft where I just brushed some varnish over it, and it's been about a year after adding the varnish, and it still looks great. I'm not an insect collector, and I'm not an expert on the subject by any stretch of the imagination, but I do have that little experience with that little cicada wing. That experience gave me the inspiration to make cicada fairy wings. To answer your second question; yes, you most definitely can bake them with the polymer clay... worked great, and I imagine the baking probably helps to dry them out faster. Thanks again!
+CertainlyCaroline thank you very much for the quick reply!! This makes me want to try that! I love bug catching and it shouldn't be difficult to find a dead winged insect to make a pretty polymer pixie out of ^^
Awesome. I'd love to see how your project comes out. Are you on Instagram or Twitter? I was thinking about coming up with a hashtag so I could see what people make...
+CertainlyCaroline my Instagram is Pokemontrainersara. I've only posted one of my clay creations there so far though, but I'll be sure to post a picture of the pixie if I get around to it! ^^ A hashtag like #lookwhatimadecaroline or something like that would be cute ^^
I've requested to follow you on Instagram. That is cute. We'll go with #LookWhatIMadeCaroline. So if you do get around to making your pixie, throw that hashtag into your post. :)
Those came out beautiful but made me sad to see a dead cicada. I love those so much - especially the sound they make. I know they can't live forever though. Something interesting though is that right after watching this I went outside to feed my dogs and cats their breakfast. In the grass by a stump I spotted a wing. Then I found the two smaller wings and then the other large wing. No bug though and all the wings were scattered. Maybe a bird or snake ate the cicada? We have lots of black birds around constantly and they eat anything/everything. I saved the wings for later use. :) Sad to think a cicada was eaten though. - Heidi
I love cicadas too. I love their sound; I'm listening right now to their music as I'm sculpting outside. What lovely Providence that you should walk outside after watching the wings tutorial to find cicada wings, though I do agree it's sad to think the little guy got eaten. Nature is both cruel and beautiful at the same time, somehow. I suppose if he weren't there for the black bird, the black bird would be one hungry fellow, so it is the way of things. I'm surprised how many perfect wings my kids and I find if we keep an eye out for them. They are so beautiful and mysterious. Thank you for your lovely comment. I hope a lot of people read it and walk away with a little more love for the wonders of the natural world and our place in it.
CertainlyCaroline Thank you for the awesome reply! I know the bird probably wanted a snack. They eat the cat and dog food too. I started putting my dog's food dish in her dog house to hopefully deter the birds. The black birds don't find it but the little brown wren's hop into her doghouse and steal little pieces of food. I love all things in nature and go hiking quite often. I also bring a small trash bag to collect garbage other people leave in the beautiful forest paths I take. I have also been outside lately listening to the cicadas and it is wonderful to fall asleep to at night. :) I think I have a photo of one on my instagram - NettyPreat - and if not I will have to fix that. I have taken some great photos of them lately.
CertainlyCaroline Thank you :) I am working on more fish and going to at least do one with tadpoles. I also have a couple water dragons in progress. I had the idea last night of doing some creepy Halloween ones in jars of slightly tinted resin to be like specimen jars. I am going to reuse some glass food jars from mustard etc. I put the cicada up just now. I can't believe I didn't do it sooner since they are one of my favorite things. That was a really good shot. I love the zoom on my camera. :D
I'll look forward to seeing your work on Instagram, I'll know it's you when I see fish in water and I think it's actually fish in water but then I realize it's not, if that makes any sense. Nice connecting with you. :)
Hi Janine, I use transparency sheets with the wings preprinted on them. I buy mine from a ooak dollmaking supplier but I think just about any transparency sheet would work since the oven just doesn't get hot enough for it to be a problem (though a very thin transparency might be problematic). I'd suggest testing first if you're trying out a new transparency sheet, and just keep an eye on it while testing.
Has anyone ever had experience with real butterfly wings doing this? It sounds macabre, but I have a swallowtail that had to live in my house a couple years back because he decided to come out of his cacoon a full three months early in full winter. I fed him and things but he still died. I'd like to remember him as jewelry.
Hi Elise, How kind of you to care for the little guy when he couldn't care for himself. I didn't happen to find butterfly wings, so I couldn't try them out, but like you, I did wonder about it. I do know people will put a butterfly wing in a cabochon and cover it in resin. If you find a dead moth or something you might want to try out the liquid polymer clay method (from the video) on those wings, since butterfly wings would have similar results. Hope I'm making sense. :)
Oooooo!! This is so amazing!! I would love to try using insect wings in my art, but wether they're dead or alive, I can't stand touching them. I get goose bumps and chills! 😖😖Insects are still beautiful, though. I just have to settle with making art inspired by them
Instant subscribe! Thank you! (Also, anyone else here from The Room of Requirement on Facebook trying to figure out how the heck to make that key mobile?! Help!)
but because I live in germany and i´m only 12 years old I cant´t make this by my self fimo is in germany so expensive and my dad and mom don´t wont to spey so much money for that :( sorry for my bad english ;)
Your English is very impressive. I've got an 11 year old that works around our house when she wants something she can't afford, perhaps that's an idea?
Thanks for watching, Mayara. Just to let you know I didn't kill anything to make art. I used cicada wings found on the forest floor. Hope that makes sense. Stay safe!
Hey girl, my name is Francisco and I "fairy" new to ur channel and I am living so much. The tutorials make excellent sense and I for sure applying this skills to my drag. thank you doll. Sincerely XOXO, Francisco/Franchezka
At least part of the insect becomes immortal , I liked it thanks for sharing .
Thanks for that thought, Kerry. ❤

YOU DID YOUR WINGS VIDEO!! 👏👍💚 Love it!! So clever to do with real insect wings. Great job Caroline. They are stunning.

These fairy wings are amazing! The wings are so Beautiful and your instructions make it so easy to understand! Love watching your videos. TFS

Dogbutt honestly I agree with you but sharks loose there teeth almost every other month. Then they grow back. It's a shark thing
I like the one you made totally vs the ones started from real wings . Thank you for sharing and inspiring me
Where do get the transp6ercy from?
your videos are very magical I like the entire theme of it keep up the great work!
I really appreciate the encouragement, MintiUnicorn. Thanks for watching! :)
How amazingly creative and beautiful! Loved it!
Thank you, and thank you some more. So glad you like it! ;)
Hello how're you doing today hope you and your family are safe due to the covid 19 pandemic?
Do you think it would be possible to make these "people-sized"?
I suppose the problem with it would be the baking step, you'd need a big enough oven. You'd also need a big enough transparency of the wings, which would be difficult to come by. But theoretically, you could do it if you could overcome those obstacles. It'd sure be cool.
this is the first video of yours I have seen and I think I'm in love. this is right up my alley.
I'm thrilled you liked it, Carrie. (I go by Carrie as well). :)
Awesome sauce!

Love your sense of humor lol

Very nice!
I have a whole box of cicadia wings. Now I can use them. But I never backed clay etc. I am a newbie.

How to get the paper wing version insteed of real ones??? 🙈🙈🙈

We like your video from Karla Zayla

I don’t judge you for *FINDING* a bug THEN using the wings, but I don’t have the guts to do this...
we don't have to kill to make art... think about it

Hai tolto delle parti ad un insetto morto...allora si possono prendere anche dei peli di gatto se lo trovi morto per strada poverino ? !
thats really weird
FYI people sell ear rings made from DEAD BIRDS FEET!!!! Just sayin...
Non si fa! Rispetto per gli animali...tutti! Non è bello quello che fai! No no
Ho trovato le ali. Ho rispetto per gli insetti. Non ho ucciso un insetto. Grazie
