  • Crummock Water | A Lake District Walk around Crummock Water beneath Grasmoor Mountain
Crummock Water, a serene expanse of deep, clear water, nestles amidst the majestic peaks of the Lake District. Its elongated form, a mirror reflecting the heavens with startling clarity, stretches for nearly three miles, its depths concealing secrets as profound as the mountains that watch over it.
The lake is a sister to Buttermere, a bond forged in geological time when a single expanse of water was cleaved asunder by the inexorable march of glaciers. Yet, Crummock Water possesses a distinct character, a quieter, more introspective demeanor. Its shores, a patchwork of green fields and rugged fellside, offer a sanctuary for those seeking solace in nature's grandeur.
To the west, Mellbreak, a formidable presence, dominates the skyline. Its steep slopes, scarred by ancient glacial action, plummet dramatically into the lake, creating a landscape of raw, elemental beauty. The fell's summit, a rocky crown, rewards the determined hiker with a panorama that stretches across the entire Lake District, a vista that can leave even the most seasoned traveler breathless.
Scale Force, a waterfall of breathtaking power, cascades down the western flank of Mellbreak. Its waters, a relentless torrent, carve a path through the fellside, creating a spectacle of nature's might. The sound of its thunderous descent echoes across the lake, a constant reminder of the raw energy that shapes this landscape.
The eastern shore of Crummock Water presents a gentler face. Here, the fells are less imposing, their slopes clothed in a softer mantle of vegetation. Rannerdale Knotts, a rounded hill, rises from the lakeside, its summit offering a more intimate perspective of the surrounding peaks. The path that circumnavigates the lake is a haven for walkers, a route that invites contemplation as much as exertion.
Beneath the water's surface, a world of mystery awaits. The lake's depths are home to a variety of aquatic life, from the elusive pike to the more common perch. Anglers, drawn by the promise of a trophy catch, ply the lake's waters, their presence a fleeting disturbance in the otherwise tranquil scene.
The surrounding area is a tapestry of contrasting landscapes. To the north, the high fells of Skiddaw and Blencathra loom large, their rugged forms a testament to the region's geological history. To the south, the gentler slopes of Loweswater and the western fells offer a more accessible introduction to the Lake District.
Crummock Water is more than just a body of water; it is a heart, pumping life into a landscape of extraordinary beauty. It is a place where the spirit can find solace, where the mind can wander freely, and where the soul can connect with something deeper than itself.
Visitors to the area are often drawn to the charming villages that dot the landscape. Buttermere, with its picturesque stone cottages and welcoming inns, is a popular base for exploring the lake district. Keswick, a larger town, offers a wider range of amenities, including shops, restaurants, and a vibrant cultural scene. Cockermouth, the birthplace of William Wordsworth, is steeped in history and offers a glimpse into the literary heritage of the region.
Whether you seek adventure, tranquility, or simply a deeper appreciation for the natural world, Crummock Water and its surroundings offer a unique and unforgettable experience.

Thank you for promoting our beautiful part of the lake district. The western side of it. People think about the lake district as Windermere, Grasmere, Ambelside and Keswick but come away from them places and you'll find this. Peace and Quiet and just as beautiful.
    Thanks Neil.
From Malcolm and Sheila from Workington only 15 miles away from Crummock and 9 miles from Cockermouth.

It's nice to look at, but I prefer the historical towns and villages tours, like seeing all the little gift shops and castles and museums and of course the seaside towns.

      Me too!
I’ve done nearly 1000 of those though so fancied something new for a change
After all trying new things is how we find our new favourite things!

Will you be able to show Wast Water and Tarn Hows, or Watenleth Tarn? Enjoyed the walk along Crummock Water. I don't remember that lake at all, so it was good to see. Thanks for sharing.
