  • Hi! I am Barbara Albert, the Co-CEO of 100% Renewables, a consultancy specialising in the development of net-zero strategies.
Welcome back to our ASRS series! Today, we're diving into the step-by-step guide on how to develop effective climate metrics and targets under the Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards.
Step 1: Setting impactful climate targets begins with a clear understanding of your current emissions across all three scopes. Establishing a baseline is crucial because you can’t manage what you don’t measure. For a deeper dive into developing an ASRS-compliant carbon footprint, check out Part 10 of our video series.
Step 2: Choosing the right metrics: Select metrics that align with climate factors affecting your business. Key metrics include:
    • Greenhouse gas emissions: Track emissions across scopes 1, 2, and 3.
    • Energy usage: Monitor efficiency and energy sources.
    • Water and waste management: Measure reduction, recycling, and reuse strategies.
Balance leading and lagging indicators for current and future insights, and distinguish between absolute and intensity metrics.
Step 3: Developing SMART Targets: Effective climate targets are:
    • Specific: Clearly defined objectives.
    • Measurable: Quantifiable progress indicators linked to your metrics.
    • Achievable: Realistic and attainable with interim targets.
    • Relevant: Directly related to your business goals.
    • Time-bound: Include deadlines and a base period.
ASRS mandates disclosing how international climate agreements shape your targets. Though not compulsory, aligning with climate science is considered best practice. Targets should be dynamic, requiring regular review and adjustment.
    Integrating Climate Metrics and Targets:
To ensure metrics and targets are woven into your business strategy, focus on:
    • Governance and oversight: Board oversight for prioritising climate targets.
    • Strategic integration: Incorporating climate risks into your risk management framework.
    • Risk management: Adapting strategies to mitigate climate impacts.
    • Investment decisions: Aligning investments to contribute to climate objectives.
Learn how to weave climate action into every part of your business strategy and achieve meaningful, ASRS-compliant targets.
