Thank you, thank you, thank you. As an American, it is so great to see some of T and D's pre-1984 routines uploaded; apart from their 1980 Lake Placid Olympics appearance, the opportunity, in real time, wasn't often afforded us by U.S. television. They are simply THE BEST. EVER.
I followed them in the days they were performing. I’m the same age so I remember them well coming from uk as well. They truly were outstanding to watch. Never missed watching them in competition on tv. Great times for skating .
Thank you for this upload. I saw Gene Kelly dance this number and was entirely bewitched. I ran out and bought the music. What a treat to discover Torvill and Dean were inspired by it too. They do it more than justice. Oh I am duly in awe of the hummingbird flicker of their moves. But what I love best is the languid sultry glide of the slower tempo. They always exceed expectations.
Thank you for the beautiful comments! So happy you enjoyed this performance and felt they did such a classic piece of music justice with their choreography. :)
Wow! I’ve heard so much about this exhibition and how it was such a feat of athleticism it may never be repeated but never actually seen it until now. Thanks so much for posting. So lovely to see the amazing atmosphere of the old Queens ice rink
This was also my first time seeing this. What a wonderful presentation!! This was a very long routine and they performed it flawlessly! Is there anything at all these two athletes can't do? Just pure pleasure to watch............ Loved the music
Took me back to my dancing days. This was our show stopper. Just the same for T &D. Incredible pace, fluidity and artistic ability. Champions still even now in their 60s. X 74yr old ex dancer x
I'd have loved to see your version of Slaughter, June! Thank you so much for posting, glad you enjoyed, and I totally agree, T&D still have the magic, and can't wait to see them perform again on Dancing on Ice. All the best xx
@@larhumba4233 it was back in the 50s. We auditioned for a tv talent show. We were very highly praised but not accepted as the content ( air raid concept) was a bit too contentious at the time. Best dancing school in Ramsgate Kent U.K. xxxc
Omigod omigod this is unbelievable. Thank you thank you. This seems to me even more revolutionary than the Bolero. Should be as well known as anything Gene Kelly ever has done.
Happy Birthday Christopher Dean! Legend of Ice Dance with Jayne Torvill :-) Enjoy! Update June 6th, 2020 on Twitter, Mr Dean wrote: "OMG stumbled across this... Oh to be young....epically long. This is like a Pink Floyd track that goes on...and on. Those heady days, inspired by Mr. B (George Balanchine)" ;-)
Thank you for posting. This is a stunning addition to T&D videos. The quality of the components (music, costumes, choreography, skill and precision) is magnificent yet, like Bolero, they made it looked so easy. On top of all that, as mentioned in your summary, they created and performed this one-time routine while in the midst of perfecting scoring record compulsory dances, an unsurpassed OSP and the most recognized FD in ice dancing history. Others have approached, but none have matched or surpassed these two.
Ginger Rogers and Jane, fluid in their movements. Watch the arms of both ladies, outstretched and ready for the next activity. That is the cue to the secret
I don’t know how this got into my feed but I’m glad it did.. I thought I’d seen everything these 2 had ever performed but I have never seen this before., it’s truly exquisite!! Thk u for posting! 🐨👍🏼🇦🇺
Wow! I can't find the words for this routine of Murder on 10th Avenue. Spectacular, Thrilling, pure genius and execution are some of the words that come to mind It has been over 40 years and no skating pairs comes close. Thank you for providing us with the privilege of seeing Torville and Dean again. 10:00
Torvill & Dean. Fantastic! Never tire of watching them perform. In a class by themselves. But about Jayne's brown skates? I thought she might have said, "CAN I HAVE WHITE PLEASE? WHITE IS PRETTIER"! 😃
Oh my, how young but so perfect they were! By the way, did they ever take ballet lessons, or was their expressiveness a natural gift? I've been wondering about it for quite a while. Can anyone tell me?
Thank you for enjoying this special performance! As far as I know they didn't take Ballet lessons until they were well established as ice dancers. And definitely as they began their Professional career, after 1984, Jayne described practising Compulsory Dances daily as their "barre work". They had a natural feel for music and, Chris especially, a flair for Choreography, which is extraordinary as his Father was a Coal miner, but he & his step mother did do Ballroom Dancing. Chris & Jayne had an innate ability to transcend their environment and reach an artistic vision that still astounds today. :)
@@larhumba4233 That's what I thought. It's quite the contrary to the ice skaters' schooling in the Soviet Union and today in Russia. Perhaps that's why T&D have gained an incomparable originality, while all the Soviet and Russian skaters look alike.
@@MsSlucyna Torvill & Dean definitely came from the British style of Ice Dance to begin with, then took it further into ground breaking choreography and developed it much further than had been seen. They revolutionised Ice Dance during their time as World Champions. The British style was always very technically superior in the Compulsory Dances, fast footwork, neat edges and quick turns, in perfect unison, always skating very close together. Whereas the Russian style was more Kilian hold, more separations, dramatic, but then Bolero outdid the Russian couples on the Drama aswell! :-)
@@larhumba4233 Thank you for such an informative explanation. I don't want to sound prejudiced, but having been born and raised under the Soviet occupation I despise anything that could associated with the USSR; perhaps that's why I have always had an impression that Russian-style dancing is too vivid, posh and ostentatious. The British or Canadian one seems much more elegant and sophisticated too me. Thank you one more time.
@@MsSlucyna You're welcome! :) Thank you for the conversation, I enjoyed it. British Ice Dance Coaches like Sue & Roy Bradshaw (who created the Midnight Blues), Carol & Jon Lane and Bernard Ford all went to Canada to coach and develop Ice Dance in that country from the 1970s onwards, so Canadian ice dancers learnt the British style. Whereas Russian coaches went to America.
Oh brilliant! They were such a class act. So this would have been the year before Bolero in Sarajevo? I saw them live a number of years ago on Tyneside on their ‘farewell tour’ (which wasn’t!). They were truly amazing. A real pleasure to have seen this. Thank you.
So glad you enjoyed this rare performance, thank you for posting. Yes, this was right at the start of the Bolero season, in the Autumn of 1983, when we hadn't even seen Bolero yet make it's debut at the British Championships, before European, Olympics & Worlds in 84! Their Ice Adventures Tour was created and rehearsed in Whitely Bay! After that, and a few shows as guests on Stars on Ice in America in 1997 they did actually retire. Chris went to live in Colorado and Jayne in Sussex, both had families, then in 2005 ITV contacted them with a programme idea called Dancing on Ice! Chris now lives in West Yorkshire and next year, their 50th together, really will be their Last Dance! 💞
@@larhumba4233 Yes it was at Whitley Bay I saw them. Used to love Dancing on Ice then when it came back a couple of years after the series ended the format seemed different so I stopped watching. Never been equalled though.
@@iwillsaythisonlyonce After we all complained about the awful changes ITV gradually got the show back more to how it used to be. Give it another try next January when the new series starts. 🥰🤍👍
Check your equipment. My video is excellent quality considering how old it is, and it's a unique "one time only" performance to quote Christopher Dean. Most fans normally say Thank you, and are grateful to see it, not criticise.
