Oh, by the way, I once met Stephen King at the College World Series in Omaha, NE at the old Rosenblatt Stadium. He was in the stands to cheer on Maine, who was in the tournament that year (1991 or so). He graciously shook my hand and acknowledged my existence.
Welcome to our Ka-Tet! This series was truly magical. I remember reading it as a 'younger' person in my 20s. I still have most of them. King is so authentic as a writer that it's almost impossible not to be drawn into the story. I've never felt closer to an author than to King, because you know they've lived it and their feels are genuine. Enjoy the rest of the series.
I’m a big fan of 11/22/63. I find there are a lot of ups and downs in ‘The Dark Tower’ series. ‘The Gunslinger’ is so much better after learning more about the series and the King universe. I really enjoyed the last pages of the series. King gets a bad rep for unsatisfactory endings to his novels. I felt the ending of ‘The Dark Tower’ works on a number of levels. No spoilers, just encouraging you in your journey. Have fun!
So glad to hear your thoughts on Gunslinger. I attempted Dark Tower about 10 years ago, and just couldn’t get into Gunslinger at all so did not read any further. But, now that I’ve matured as a reader I need to try it again.
That sounds like exactly what had happened to me. But you got to read book 2 and then make up your mind. The characters that are introduced in The Drawing of the Three are amazing!
I’ve read the Dark Tower series multiple times. My favorite book in the series is ALWAYS the one I just read. SK put together a true masterpiece with this series. So much fun.
I've not read a lot of Stephen King, but I read Pet Semetary a few years back and found his writing so gripping, it was 'unputdownable'. Not sure if I will get round to Dark Tower anytime soon but I do want to read 11/22/63 - I love a good time travel story, and ranking it next to Children of Time is high praise indeed!
Its awesome that Dark Tower has grabbed you like this! I just finished up Misery and had a great time with. Dark Tower is in my plans at some point in my King journey
Misery is amazing, yet so different from what King did with The Dark Tower. In Misery everything (essentially) happens in one room, whereas with DT it’s a vast story set in multiple universes with varied timelines. Really shows Kings range!
I mean I see this as an absolute win haha. I feel like I am not ready for the dark towers series haha. I need to go through his more popular well known books first.
Yes, definitely a win! And I agree, Dark Tower is probably not the best way to start with Stephen King; maybe Misery or 11/22/63 if you prefer books without supernatural (mostly) elements. Or The Shining, It or Pet Sametary if you enjoy horror stories.
I read The Gunslinger when it came out. I liked it, but being a college student, I didnt have time to read a lot. A couple years ago, I read it again. I still liked it. I started reading the rest of the series and thought it was excellent. It is long, but it is worth reading.
I've only read a couple by him but haven't been blown away yet. Granted, they were some of his less popular works. I plan on reading 11/22/63 sometime soon though. Hopefully that'll kickstart my King reading journey. 👑 Apparently I need to get my older brother to read that, so he'll realize how he wronged me growing up. 😆
I hope you enjoy 11/22/63. It’s got a great premise, fabulous characters, and it’s heart an unlikely love story. By the way, I’m curious what books have you read by King that did not work for you? And yes, every older brother should read the part I was describing. It sure was eye-opening for me. 😂
@@KevinsNovelAdvice I agree, for me both books started out with lots of promise but quickly fizzled. I think Misery is a great place to start if you’re not looking for a horror; at least not a typical horror. And of course 11/22/63 is fabulous, but a much longer read.
I hope when You read it, you’ll have as much fun with it as I am having. Such as fabulously trippy read. Book two in the series really captivated me; King at his best, I could not put it down.
I shre the enjoyment of the series gunslinger yes not very easy to get into but once I was hooked it was like a Netflix series, I just wanted to see the next episode. I never thought id get to the end but I had a great time with itwizard & glass is a great read It's a good ride. Oh and Inverted world is everything they say about it and more Christopher Priest is a master you are in for a real treat
Finished Inverted World! What a captivating read. And, unlike some. I enjoyed the reveal at the end. Oh, and I agree about The Dark Tower, it’s binge time! I’m almost done with book 3 😂
People often say that The Gunslinger isn't that great, but I actually loved it and remember the most. I've stopped reading somewhere in the middle of Wizard and Glass. I had to return it to the library and was sure I will continue, but life happened and it's been only like 18 years since that time. I will eventually go back and finish this series. I liked King as a teen, but I've always been drawn more to his short stories and novellas. He can drag you through places when he gives himself more length to work with. Please share your opinion on the ending of Inverted World. I'm genuinely curious.
You absolutely right about King; Under the Dome dragged for me, so did Fairy Tale. Quite a few others would benefit from “fat trimming”. I can already say Inverted World is an excellent and intriguing read. Let’s see if Priest can bring it to a satisfying ending!

That’s great! If it was 1991 then he would have been probably writing The Waste Lands.

Thank you! I couldn’t agree more with the way you describe King’s power of authenticity. Looking forward to continuing the journey.

That is so exciting to hear! I agree 100% with your comment as each book I’m reading pulls me deeper into the world/story.
Wizard and Glass is my favorite book in the series! It gave me some Westworld vibes. So happy you're loving The Dark Tower series!
That’s great to hear; I’m enjoying Waste Lands and Wizard & Glass is next in line! Thanks

Yes. I’m really enjoying it this time around. This is a great example of how, with certain books, timing is Everything. Thanks!

Thanks! Ya, not sure if you’d enjoy it, but it may be worth a shot.
