“Michael had an obligation to himself, the fans, his teammates, the organization, his family, everybody,” says Tim Grover, Jordan’s longtime personal trainer. “He said, ‘If you’re going to sit down and take three hours out of your day to watch me on TV, I have an obligation to give you my best.’ “

Being the same age as Chris aka Nightwing, I have the same outlook on a lot of things. Though I've seen the video and pics of MJ on the floor on Father's Day, I've never ever heard the sobbing and crying. That shit hit me hard and made me cry, even though I still have my father.
On a brighter note, the soundtrack to this docuseries is fire! I be feeling the old 90s hip hop.

iamdnice1 bruh I literally said the same thing to my homie. I’m 33 so prob 3 years younger than you if your Chris age. But damn, to hear MJ sob like that was sureal. The nostalgic watching is soo crazy. I remember being in 6th grade getting ready for summer that year they beat the Sonics. I legit thought I was goin to the NBA back then.. got dayum good times

@@hightolerance8728 True that. I'll be 36 in October (ouch, FN hurts saying that lol). The only time during the summer I wanted to be in the house was for MJ's finals appearances. It was epic then as it still is now. I've never, ever been on the edge of my seat for a documentary in my life. I was telling Chris that I still have my Champion black Jordan and Rodman jerseys, with the "UNSTOPP-A-BULLS" VHS. Dated myself again lol.

Maybe Mrs Wing would understand what MJ was doing if it's compared to a Army Drill Sargeant instead of a 9-5 office job. A coworker in an office job isn't gonna be mean and yell at you but an Army Drill Sargeant is gonna be mean to toughen you up and that's what MJ did too.

It’s tough love... I don’t think MJ was doing it to install fear. I think it was more so, MJ was like ok if I can get these guys to stand up to me an not back down Then HELL they won’t back down from anyone. If you compete with the best(MJ) an held ya own. Going up against any other form of competition would be a breeze.

Episode 7 was the one. I teared up as MJ got emotional and talked about, "If they don't want to play that way...." Man, it hit me right through the heart. As a competitor, I'm with you, Chris. Shit talking and being hard on your teammates is part of the game of basketball and how it's played. I also understand it's not how to motivate everyone and how someone could see it as bullying, but I believe Jordan shows it comes from a good place and boundless passion for the game.
Damn, what a fantastic series and I wish it was 100 episodes. Buying on bluray the second it gets announced. (Please get announced.) Always love you two chatting and can't wait for the next one, although it'll be bittersweet. I'll stop rambling now. 💖✌

My wife looked directly at me at the end of episode 7 and said " I now understand your mentality" It is where I built my leadership methods. I have had old employees come up to me years later and tell me that they understand why I pushed them so hard. I never managed anyone for the job. I taught them things that they could use in life. It is a very fine line in the moment.

My favorite thing he said was that he wouldn’t ask anyone to do something that he didn’t do himself. The goal is to win and sometimes you have to be the asshole that pushes everyone else to get there. Kobe was the same way, and guess what? It worked. So how can you be upset when doing that got him 6 titles? MJ did what he had to do and during the part where he got emotional, you saw that doing that took a toll on him. He wanted to be looked at as this nice guy, but if he wanted to win he had to take on that persona.

My take on the MJ tyrant at practice is, if you are the leader of the team and your coach is laid back he probably felt he had to motivate the others. Scott Burrell doesn't seem salty at all! As Chris said MJ made him a champion and that will last forever. I feel that MJ needed to count on his team and when you look at the way things went down it worked. Leadership comes in many forms and I agree with Jodie, it's not for everyone. I totally relate to the ref calling soft fouls and giving a hard one just to prove a point.

I've got a question for you : how do you interpret MJ's tears at the end of episode 7 ? If he believes that the end always justifies the means why would he feel emotional about that?
For me he knows his past behaviour was at least questionable but he can't really admit it because that would totally contradict his innerself and the way he has built his success over the years.

Man, this generation is too soft. My early basketball coach in Maputo, Mozambique (Papatxo) would stop the practice or the game just to smack you in the head if you messed up. That was public humiliation but we all understood he wanted us to be stronger, faster, a team. If you went solo when a teammate had a better position he would smack you even if you scored.

I like MJ’s game. Not so much his personality. Guy was a dick and I’m not sure you can convince me otherwise. Sure, you can talk about being tough and all that but you don’t necessarily need to do that. First person that comes to mind is Tim Duncan. Won 5 rings as the leader of his squad. Sure you can talk about Bruce Bowen but Tim still won 2 without Bruce. U can see MJ’s full bitterness in his HOF speech.
Till this day, the guy is still petty as hell as seen with his feud with Barkley. Your friend criticised your role as a GM, that’s what he was supposed to do as an analyst. Plus, it’s not like it wasn’t the truth. It’s almost 10 years too.

It's funny because MJ actually talked about that being called a "tyrant", "People can say 'he really was a tyrant', no that's you because you never won anything", and he's right tbh, the dude has 6 rings and is undefeated in the Finals. Will his mentality work in every work setting? Of course not in a normal office job you'll get reported to HR and fired lol. But in the NBA to win at the highest level and CONTINUE to win at the highest level, you can't argue against MJ's resume. His teammates knew that though, at least the ones we still hear about - outside of Pippen, Steve Kerr is the greatest example. Kerr stood up to MJ told him he's not a pushover and he got MJ's respect. Why do you think MJ pulled him aside in the huddle in '97 finals and told Kerr if the double-team comes he was going to pass the ball to him. MJ trusting someone else to take the last shot?!? Not only that but to trust Steve Kerr?!? It's not a coincidence. MJ knew Kerr was tough and was going to battle with him in the trenches. I also thought MJ showing emotion in the end was so powerful. He's human, all the buzz calling him a bad leader or a bully hurts him like it hurts anyone else - but that's why he said "If you don't want to play that way, don't play that way". He's saying look I'm not saying this is the only way to lead, but this is HOW I LEAD and why I did what I did, don't tell me to change it is WHO I AM...and guess what I SUCCEEDED, not only that so did my teammates. They have rings on their fingers because of him. No one can dispute that.
It also made me look back at MJ's speech at Kobe's memorial service. He said there that one of the things that drew him to Kobe as a big brother was that Kobe wanted to learn everything about the game of basketball, but especially learn MJ's approach to the game of basketball - he wanted embody everything MJ was. Perhaps to MJ, after hearing the media and even his own teammates call him a bully, tyrant, etc... to see someone who embraced him completely as a basketball player like Kobe did was a breath of fresh air and perhaps why he viewed Kobe like family and was ready to give everything he knew to him. MJ finally met someone who understood him. Powerful stuff.
Great stuff Chris and Jodi, enjoy all the content you guys put out! I don't buy basketball shoes until I watch your performance reviews haha

There are 2 things that explain Jordan being that intense
1- he needed to get the team READY for play off level intense competition
2- leadership has a price! Positive motivation alone can't get you 3-peat level champions, you have to make any team experience failure and frustration so they know how to deal and not get demotivated but rather elevate

As an 18 year old, I never got to watch MJ and really understand what made him the GOAT, but man MJ gets me fired up at least a few times every episode. I can only imagine what it would be like to be in a locker room with him. The closest thing I got to seeing MJ was Kobe, and it shocks me how similar they actually are. Young players all over need to watch this series before they can claim anyone else is the “greatest player of all time.”

People complain about how he was with his teammates, they’re all grown ass men if you don’t like it stand up to him. Anyone who has played sports on a high level, trust me there’s ALWAYS someone on your team you hate as a person, fights always happen it’s just what comes with the territory... you either stand up for yourself or crumble like a cookie...and many guys have crumbled.

The one thing I noticed is that Reinsdorf said he was going to honor MJ’s NBA contract while he was in the MLB AA and AAA because he knew he was underpaid. To me that means they could have definitely redo Scottie’s contract. There was never any AA or AAA player getting paid $3mil a season. The Bulls did Scottie wrong. I don’t blame him for some of the things he did. I don’t agree with them but I can see why better now than I did as a kid.

I can understand why Mrs. Wing would feel that way but I think one thing to consider is that sports, at its highest level, is about competition. On a lower level, sending your kids to youth league, playing pick up games at the Y, sure, you could argue it shouldn't really be about that, it's about character building, participation, etc. But at the highest level, which MJ was at, it's about competition. It's a very aggressive nature by definition. It's not participation trophies, it's literally I want to beat you, to dominate you, to prove that I am better than you. Like that's sports at the highest level, straight up.
In Jordan's mind, it was more like a war. And again, you can criticize him and say it's just a game and that's within your right. But to him, it wasn't. And to a lot of us, even though we never got close to that level, we understand that at that level, literally the HIGHEST LEVEL you can get, yeah, it is like a war. And I've heard a lot of military folks mention after watching these episodes that they say Jordan has many excellent qualities in a military leader. There's an old adage: In war, a friend is someone who holds your hand when you're dying. A leader is someone who helps you live. That's why they're tough. That's whey they yell and scream at you. Because it's not about worrying about feelings, it's about making sure you can handle the fire. And again, Jordan treated the game like war. He didn't yell and berate his teammates because he was a bully who enjoyed being malicious towards other people. He did it because he wanted to make sure his teammates would be tough enough, because if they can't handle him yelling at them, then how are they going to handle the pressure of having to come up big in an NBA finals?

Baseball fitness has a heavy focus on core and hip strength and of course upper body strength of shoulders back and arms for a powerful elastic like swing and throwing and your endurence more or less just needs to be short bursts rather then extended lengths.. even the heavy weight basketball players have a slim athelete build whereas in baseball you see much more of a beer body shape around the league... especially in guys prime they always tend to have a heavy upper body mass and big hips/thighs... not the lean fit air defining bodies of basketball players.
and you gotta consider MJs playing style which was hard at both ends of the court. not to mention the finesse aspect of basketball... running full tilt, stopping on a dime, and then gracefully shooting compared to baseball being more or less a raw power sport combined with of course elements of speed and extreme hand eye precision etc etc but theres no doubt the fast twitch muscles and just physical strength and condition of baseball and basketball are completely different... a 50min game vs. a 2 1/2-3hr game.

My take away...the media is the devil...that was low of them to insinuate his gambling was related to his father's murder...🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️..and MJ demanded the best of his peers and they were rewarded with championships and their mutual respect as players..that's all they needed who are we to judge ...results speak for themselves. 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆 MJ to me is the definition of a true leader.

The last 2 minutes of Ep VII where MJ spoke about his leadership and challenging teammates when they didn’t want to be challenged...that gave me goosebumps. It embodies EVERYTHING about MJ and what makes him elite. I understand what Mrs. Wing is saying, BUT this isn’t a “normal” job. The collective goal is a championship, you are only as strong as your weakest link. MJ needed to know he could RELY on teammates in the trenches. It’s not like getting monthly finance reports to your manager. This is athletic competition AT ITS HIGHEST LEVEL. It doesn’t get any better...as Kobe said “to make history you have to do historic things”...MJ said he wanted to win at any cost. His approach to the game should surprise NOBODY. He also grew into being this player. He paid his dues so teammates didn’t have to. You want to win? I will get you there...I just ask you play as hard as I do.

Same! It was amazing to see. I got chills! Because it is almost the most vulnerable you might see MJ ever. You can just tell he wanted to be well liked but to be the man and be the best and be a champion, that’s not what he could be like. And it hurt him I think. Ughhhhh loved that moment.

Gotta agree with Chris, there's different types of motivation depending on the field, but trash talk is a part of basketball and that's how it worked in a lot of locker rooms. For example Barkley said that he responded well to a coach yelling at him and played better, but at the same time stated that while he was doing the tough love coaching, he had to know who's like him and who will start to cry. I think it was a way of pushing guys to another level and testing them out to see what they were made of and if they fit. And it seems everybody on the Bulls knew that and was ok with it.
Now it's a totally different story today - we have mental specialists that work with athletes and you raise yourself to another level by confidence gained from skill, skill comes from hard work yada yada yada, your mental coach is guiding you all the time and that is cool, but I don't think it would be enough back then, because the game is played different. Not only there was a lot of trash talk, people tried to kill each other on the floor and today everything is a technical, there's no hard fouls, you'll get thrown out just for looking at somebody. Like Scottie's dunk on Ewing with the shove and stepover? He'd get a technical for that today. MJ knew they'd have some serious battles and tried to prepare his teammates or weed out (for lack of a better word) those who weren't up for it. If they can take it, they're ready for the Knicks or Pacers or whoever. If they take the challenge, they'll work harder to raise their skill. So same result, different ways to go about it, but not because of MJ being a d-bag. It was a different time, that's all.

Baseball shape = stand in a field or stand by a base or sit on the bench. Hell, you can have someone else run for you in baseball. One of the biggest names ever in that sport smoked a cigar while playing and had a gut.
Basketball shape: running, upper body, stamina, ability to take a hit once and a while, shoulders, etc.
Baseball players out layin around doin flutter kicks while basketball players lift and go run around and shoot

Had exactly the same conversation about episode 7 with my wife yesterday. About MJ beeing tough on his teammates - she doesn’t get it eather. :-)
Being from Croatia, the focus of our conversation was Pippen-Kukoc relationship wich escalated in those final seconds of the Game 3 against the Knicks. Being in my late teens at the time, and without all the internet news, I remember how much I disliked Scotty, and how he was portraied as a villain towards Kukoc in Croatian press. Only years latter I found out about his poor contract with the Bulls, but only now, after watching the show, I understand the size of the unfairness that Jerry and Jerry did to him. I’m not saying it was OK to make Tony the center point of his problems with the management, but I do understand how underappreciated he must have felt at that time.

I agree with Jody...I think it's old school mentality. Yes, tough love but that is not the only way you can make a winning mentality. Look at martial arts where you are zen and deadly or motorsports with pinpoint precision and focus.

I love love love this series. Coming at the perfect time too. I have one nitpick though. The jumping around for me is not an effective way to tell the story. It seems like they're so eager to show the unseen '98 footage that they're forgetting to keep everything flowing first. I feel like they should've completed the story of baseball and MJ's return before jumping back to '98. It's not a big deal though and art is about to outshine the artist

Crybabies will always complain about people being “too hard” on them. Like Jordan said “That’s you because you never won anything”. Jordan wasn’t that hard on the people who actually came close to his work ethic, if you don’t wanna be yelled at, then you gotta get in the same level.

Ending of Episode 7 I started tearing up when he was. So much passion. These two episodes had SO much content. Only thing it's missing for the people that weren't as big into the Bulls is the new people, trades, and people gone from the team during this time. Wife asked why BJ was somewhere else, why they got rid of Grant, etc.

A tyrant, not a nice captain, too intense❓MJ did say the new guys (Kerr, Luc, etc) rode in high like they already champions when they weren't even battle-tested, or proven. Understandably, MJ pushed to better them both physically & mentally, & when they didn't want to be challenged. MJ got them out of their comfort-zone, just as one could say the Bad Boy Detroit Pistons, in part, did to MJ himself. Didn't need to push Rodman, as MJ said...he already knew what Rodman (former Piston) was capable of.
Pressure was heavily weighted on MJ too. Consider if they loss, MJ'd be taking all the blame, not Luc Longley, Kerr, Scott Burrell or Jud Buechler! I suppose MJ wanted them to feel & share the pressure. Need to break some eggs to make an omelet. When given lemons, make lemonade. It all comes down to your mindset & how champs respond. MJ tested them to get the favorable response. Tough love got them out of their comfort-zone to become Champions, not just once but multiple.

By the way, my girl thinks the same way. She just keeps on saying how he’s “a jerk” and “a bully” and “asshole”. I don’t know if it’s a gender thing like Jody said, I think it’s a competitive thing. If you’ve been in serious competition, especially in basketball, it’s just different. And you get it. Ifnyounhavent, you don’t.

Bro you and I must be right around the same age. During the second 3peat I was the only kid in the neighborhood with a basketball hoop. I remember my friends and I pulling my parents old black and white tv onto the front porch, watching the bulls play the jazz, hooping on commercials, rockin our Jordan’s, trying to act like we were him. Waking the neighbors up yelling at the tv and getting geeked over Jordan. Those were the days!

My 7th and 8th grade Basketball was a father figure to me. My dad was around however he couldnt make my games sometimes (because he was a girls basketball coach). So my Coach was always their for me but he pushed me . However the coach my freshman year was the worst. First of all I run 5. He told me I to loose weight and called me a fat ass. I was 6'3 240, he was 5'9 330. He made that season a nightmare so I understand being tough but their is a line.

I'm sorry Mrs Wing, I'm usually on your side but being constructive and helpful in practice works best for new players. These guys being pushed hard by MJ are not new to the game at all, they're supposed to be the best of the best. It's not just a guy thing, it's a high level team sport thing. I believe MJ said it himself in a past episode, "If you can't handle the pressure now, you won't be able to handle the playoffs"
All business on the court whether in practice or the big game. I think this is the unwavering mentality that brought the team their astounding success.

That comment about turning nobodies into a three-peat defeats the Bronsexual argument : “nobody can carry a team like LeBron” aka 2018 finals and that year with the Cav’s when they made finals. Like why do they think LeBron has done things that MJ hasn’t XD
