  • I've balanced the carbs, changed the plugs and had the carbs cleaned but it still runs like a dog! Any idea other than new carbs (which are outside my budget).

I've got one with over 10,000 hours on it and it does the same thing. Since day one

that is a normal idle for a 3 cylinder engine and the carbs look good on the gauges it could be the co. screws are not set right turn them in all the way (but not to hard or you will ruin the needle holes) and back out to there original settings connect a wire on the mass (somewhere on the crankcase) and check in the dark if the ignition wires are leaking and of course check the valve clearance, any questions just ask greets michael.

very good video I have a 50hp I changed the jets of the carburetors and I consult how much turn you have to get out of the regulation screw so that it works well

Problem not quite fixed but much better now. I had the carbs ultrasonically cleaned (which made no difference), adjusted idle speed to 950rpm (in the video it was slower than that) and I adjusted the mixture (seemed to make very little difference). Engine still misses at tickover, but goes fine (up 5500rpm flat out with 2 people on board) and does not stall when I'm coming along side a harbour wall. Boat is on Rhodes in Greece & only used one month a year so it is not worth buying new carbs.

Hard to tell from the sound in a video, but maybe this helps. My 1999 Honda BF50 (same as yours) started making a knocking noise when it got hot. Long story short, something under the flywheel had come loose, I think it was a magnet, and when hot the parts were bumping. I sounded like a rod knock. Anyway, a new flywheel fixed it.

Yours runs much better than mine lol, my motors dual 50s shake like they have Parkinson's disease. I did a carb rebuild on one and it helped. They never idled good for shit and all the boat mechanics couldn't fix it, so I did it myself. Hondas have an idle jet I was told but I have never seen it or found it in the manual. I think they might be under the dime size covers on the side of each carb.

It has a small miss at idle. Rare on a honda, but on my mazda miata when the spark plug wires started to go bad it would do the same thing. Put new wires in and it would idle perfectly. Did you gap the plugs per spec? How about fresh fuel? Put a can of seafoam in your gas, put it on the water and give it an "Italian" tuneup.

ive had the same motor with the same problem you have. Check under the flywheel. You may find something rubbing under there

I seen another video same noise and poster said it turned out to be fuel pump making the noise, or could be valves need adjust

Did you fix the problem ??

The idle should be much smoother than that. Not sure what 'seafoam' is but I've tried various fuel additives and they made no difference.

Having same problem, synced crabs, cleaned all the pilot channels, set up pilot screws, but it still runs with a tickling. Have no idea what to do next.

It was the standard Honda filter for my engine. Bought it from a Honda dealer in the UK.
