My favorite amp!! I bought it 20 years ago, USD 399, and I am happy as hell wit it. I do not use pedals and just play a strat, only clean and light overdrive tones. Thxs.

You know what made this amp a keeper for me....I unplugged the speaker and connected it to a 2 x 12 extension cabinet. The difference was nothing less than mind blowing. If the tone of this amp frustrates you, try an external cab speaker before getting rid of it. You can thank me later.

      What Ohms did you use?

      @@larryhey3732 I used a Kustom 2 x 12 pretty sure that cab is 8 ohms. What a great cab around 1970 vintage.

What is the difference between this, the "NOS" model, and the Blues Jr III laquered tweed? The specs seem exactly the same, what am I missing?

The Blues Jr III Tweed (aka NOS) has a Jensen CN12 speaker, which has a more vintage/warmer tone. The Black Tolex Blues Jr IV has a Celestion A type speaker, which should have more head room. There are other exclusive versions with Eminence Red White and Blues, Eminence Cannabis Rex, Eminence Swamp Thang or Hot Rod Hempster speakers. Each of them (among others) brings a different tone, basically affecting how highs, mids and lows are pronounced. I’m not sure if there are also differences between the III and IV versions on how the volume and master affect the amp breakup.

Second question: I bought one 01/29/2016, and told the salesman I was seeking a Jazz-like clean tone for rhythm strumming. He showed all the same settings to me for amp and guitar that you teach in this video for clean tone. He also said this amp has Grove tubes. He also recommend not to change one 12AX7 to a 12AT7 for more clean tone head-room (like the George Benson amp), per it may damage the Blues Jr. He said what I could do for more clean tone head room was to can change out the three 12AX7 preamp tubes (leave power tubes alone), which are at a 4-level rating to three 12AX7 preamp tubes, which are same tube, but they are a max 10-level rating giving the amp more clean head room. What do you think?

The 12AT7 won't damage your amp, but it will reduce volume a little (not necessarily what you want to do with a 15W amp). I would definitely try the cleaner rated 12AX7's though.

So the master knob controls the volume, and the volume knob acts more like gain control?

    • @alexleezer7538

The volume is basically saying how hard the tubes should work. The harder the tubes work the louder it is, so basically when he is saying it acts as a gain control, he's saying it is adjusting the volume but the tubes are naturally starting to break up. The master volume basically just only deals with how loud it is. If you set the volume up, it'll work the tubes and make the amp louder, but then you can lower the master to keep about the same tone just at a lower volume. It may sound complicated but it's really simple once you get the hang of it.

Well, it wasn't the blues, but it sure did make me feel bad..

What brand of tubes does it have in it, such as: Grove Tubes or JJ Electronics. If I changed out one the three preamp tubes 12AX7 to a 12AT7 would the volume for clean tone increase from 3? This is what was done in the George Benson Fender amp to give it more head room clean volume 5-6 volume. So, I was wondering if that would work with this amp? If, so which of the 3-preamp tubes do I swap out? I would guess the preamp tube that is closest to the power tubes.

Hey I was at guitar center the other day and I plugged an American Telecaster Deluxe. Fantastic. Is there a way I can connect a headphone jack to it?
