Im a professional player... I only play what I enjoy playing. I love my practise and rehearsal. I perform as if Im practising therefore never worry about anxiety or performance issues. There is much fear involved in performing brought on by the mind and all its social conditioning. I do not get caught up in the flattery, authority and nonsense of music, especially in the classical world I recognise their is no such thing as the best in the world..that a subjective issue..someones choice. All these points eliminate fear, anxiety and are based on logic, reason and rationale. Music is foremost a aesthete based on sound therefore..listening. I do not watch performances of guitarists I have never heard before. I close my eyes and listen. listening whilst watching is a distraction. The mind says"oh boy did he do that..oh wow,mmm he sits funny, mmm he used the wrong fingers on that passage etc etc etc." Lastly..if you care what the audience will say or think you will never play to your full potential. It will always be based on another authority ,comparison and never sound like you. Learn a piece properly. Which means you must know it without effort. good luck

I guess as you get more proficient you begin to use less reference points, though by now I assume it means nothing for him now.
