I'm always baffled by how popular Mago de Oz is in Spanish-speaking countries, especially considering that folk metal isn't a very popular genre in general. They have RUclips videos with more than 100M views. But Mago is otherwise a niche band everywhere else, unknown by most metalheads from other places.
Their music themes are very anti-religious, and there's an embrace of pagan lore. In LatAm countries, where the majority is hyper religious and ingrained in our entire culture, stuff like this is like finally getting to drink a glass of water after days out in the dessert dehydrated. We would be ostracized by everyone if we attempted that, so it's nice to have representation of that in music. It's a mix of different metal genres mixed in with Celtic sounds, it's definitely casting a wide net. The stories also hit on points of embracing oneself, mother nature, Gaia, climate change, all that. Which is the norm for metalhead bands, so while it's got a few original points, it also fits within many of the cliches of metal that we all know and love. But that's conveyed lyrically. Stuff like Fiesta Pagana sound nice, but if you don't know the words it's just an okay song. There's a reason we love to go wild to this song at parties, and it sounds nice but the message amps you up, and it's fun to dance to. Magi De Oz albums usually all are a fantastic story being told through them thematically and I think many of us really fuck with that. Not knowing Spanish people are missing out on a very big part of the draw, which makes it understandable why it's so niche outside of Spanish speaking areas. The UK, America, Australia all have their own metal scenes with bands that go super hard, that do similar things as Mago but in their own language. And for some reason as a Mexican we don't really have big superstar metal bands. We have Vitrivius, Agora, among others. From other countries we have stuff like Rata Blanca, etc. But none of them have really gotten so gigantic that the rest of the hispanosphere of influence knows all about their music. So we go "Spanish Metal? Hell yeah, you heard of Mago De Oz? Si wey!" It's just one of those things where when a band blows up it really does blow up internationally across the market. Even if the genre itself stays niche as hell.
This is a Spanish band, they had different singers, mainly spanish, but the very first one was bolivian, José Andrea and the bolivian flutes are something you can find on the first albums and concerts. This is definetely one of their mastepieces, represents in that concert the transition between José to Zeta, the girl is Patricia, and that was the start to their top. I would recommend you to check on Illusia and Ira Dei albums too. This is a band you should check quite more deeply to get a propper opinion, so the song was made for José originally, Zeta, Txus (another singer they had) and Patricia gave a different sound (so their voices are very different), keeping the vibe. Right now, Rafa Blas is the main singer. And the pipers are Galician/Asturian, it's a very typical sound from that region of Spain. The main point of this band is how they mix harmonies, with all the variety of spanish and international music styles and poetry in the lyrics. For me, this is a must music band, and sorry, if someone doesn't apreciate what they do, this person needs therapy.

Mägo de Oz is very political and I love them for that. You can feel the passion and I'm glad you had the lyrics while you were reacting. Their music might sound cheerful, but the lyrics talk about power, religion, money and the struggle for the world to become a better place. Also, the "prayer" at the end is more a complaint than a petition, because a fair god would do things differently. That's why it is so brave and powerful, and that's also why many of us know it word by word. Anyway, many thanks for this reaction. Since this song is quite long, not many reactors consider it.
