Here's how it went down: Delon told Clement directly that he was right for the part of Ripley during a special meeting with the producers (who were both agast at such a bold statement) even though he was still a virtual unknown and the role had already been cast. Discussion was over after Rene's intelligent and influential wife, Bella, spoke out that Delon was right. He got the part, the movie was a smasher and overnight he became the most seductive man in cinema. (*Sources: Delon tells in a television interview about how he got the part, GQuk magazine, other sources.)

The only problem with the trailer is it kind of gives away a little much information about the twist in plot regarding Alain Delon's character. only because I happened to watch the movie before hand and it was more interesting to figure it out gradually rather than sort of already having an idea of what was about to happen.

See, I usually like classics over modern remakes but the reason I thought this version was lacking was the fact that I did not believe for one second that a Ripley looking like THAT would want to be anyone else, I mean why on earth would he? (I do think Alain could have been perfect for Dickie though...) That and the 1999 Ripley was a much more layered and complex character, played beautifully by Matt Damon as opposed to Delon's more cold, calculated, suave Ripley.

Delon in this role perfectly achieves what is real psychopathy. Apparently some viewers at the time got physically ill after trying to reconcile his appearance with his deeds. The juxtaposition of physical and mental was the core essence of the film's brilliance.

To me it was a sad ending...although Alain was the bad guy from the beginning, I also sensed a troubled soul, something dark and desperate that almost made me sympathize with him, even though everything he did was cruel. In the end, you could see happiness in his eyes - he was finally satisfied with his life. And in the final scene, while resting on a beach, a lady called him. He calmly got up, thinking that he achieved everything he ever wanted... and the rest is history.

I gave this garbage thumb's DOWN. And aside from me being a gay man, I'm in this business.
Without giving too much (of me away), I work in this business, and I saw this, when it was just restored by Mr Scorcese's rerelease of Le Plien De Soleil (Purple Noon). It ENRAPTURED me. It CAPTIVATED me. Why?
I'm NOT 'P.C.' (politically (IN)correct. I care about stories, acting. NOT BULLSHIT.
I'll be brief; one of the major things I DESPISE about (modern American) films, is they literally 'telegraph' as much as possible to the viewer as possible. A film where one can't leave - even for a moment - w/out missing things is not done, anymore.
My mum just saw Call Me By Your Name. (I watched an R rated trailer), and was turned off..
Why? Couldn’t care less about the sexuality. I DO care about how the STORY is PRESENTED. I HATE things being 'telegraphed', i.e., a hand held a bit too long, etc. I WANT TO USE MY BRAIN!
If you want GOOD film watch Le Plien De Soleil. If you want 'cute, American, gay love story', this is for you.
