You're completely correct. I think the biggest reason for that is this was directed by Studio Shaft and Shinbo and that director is well known for pulling these types of visuals out of nowhere you can also see it with their utterly bizzare directing on the comedy series Pani Poni Dash (as well as Bakemonogatari). This show and that one have harsh colors, and bizzare psychological imagery and weird 3d wireframe art
Five years ago, after watching the Xebec adaptation of the manga Mahou Sensei Negima! and feeling slightly underwhelmed by it aside from the final episodes which gripped my heart and never let go unlike any other media I'd seen at the time, I watched Shaft's loose adaptation (if you can even call it that) of the same series. Which we can just call it season 2 since its entirely its own thing, I think. I'm not 100 percent clear on that but it doesn't really matter right now. When I tried to think of why I loved this anime so much, I wondered what it was. Was it the characters? Was it the gags? Was it the story itself? I mean, those are all integral parts of Negima...but they aren't what stood out to me. It was the first Shaft series that I had ever watched, but what does that really mean? Five years later I revisit one of the best OPs I've ever watched and heard after learning that this was directed by none other than the director of Bakemonogatari and Kizumonogatari, Tatsuya Oishi. And it is when I realize that I fell in love with this show because his visual style was like no other I had seen at the time. The use of colors, digital filtering and editing, the fluid movements of the characters even as still frame images...this OP had it all. Oishi's visual vocabulary is such that he can bring animation beyond its limits, by incorporating multiple types of media and aesthetics into a visual narrative. He can create entire worlds where the boundaries between reality and fantasy are blurred. And the backdrop of the greytone sky and color palettes, the walls and clusters of desks both existing to make the characters blend into their surroundings but also pop out...and the movements of the camera bringing us closer yet farther to the characters every time we pan toward and away from them. Some of these characters were only recognizable by number, but the way the camera would look down on them imprinted their numbers in my mind forever. I'm not particularly good at sakuga talk or getting into the technical nitty gritty of things, but I'm just saying what I feel. This OP is truly fantastic, and one of the many reasons I absolutely adore Shaft as both a production company, and an institution of artists.
+Zotesoap Negima?! Is the anime adaption of Negima Neo, a spin off directed by Akamatsu and another random dude, not an adaptation of the original Negima.
... And this is the incomplete broadcast version. The complete version (without some of the girls spelling out "Mambo") is the one they used in the DVD/Blu-ray release.
I checked all episodes and the only place I found it is in the ending of the last episode. but theres a problem, the credits in this video and in the ending of the last episode are different. but this specific version of the opening with credits like these is in none of the episodes my theory is that this is the opening in the TV version of some episodes, but then they changed it for the blu rays, and now this version is only in the ending of the last episode (which is very annoying, cause the credits in the last episode are incredibly distracting, since they block the visuals)

The song fits the tone of Negima, but the visuals look like they belong in a psychological anime series.

@@trixiewitchiecoconutThanks. Always wondering why it had bakemonogatari vibe

to this day I love this OP but watching this version of the anime after reading the series I hate what they did to the characters.

Negima!? was directed by Akiyuki Shinbou and Shin Oonuma, not Tatsuya Oishi
