I love this video. The music is equally as good as the content. I sometimes can't remember which shooter is which based on the name alone so this video is a great reference point. I always seem to catch something new when rewatching it.

I like to make good my word. Unfortunately I also have to make "3DS - 3 dimensional space" featuring a 30 year old plastic toy and Gary Stardust, and "The Star Stoldier Story" with every game in the Star Soldier Series. Raizing for Christmas DUDE!!!!
I love ALL Terra Crestas, Raidens, Raystorm, Thunder Forces, Darius, Cotton, some R Type, some Gradius. Then gems I find out on PS1 import (Gekioh Shooting King or Atari Jag (Tempest 2000) or even Wonderswan (Silver Sword Judgement) and Game Gear (GG Aleste), and most shooters on PC Engine/CD I own and love. You really did an excellent job including these guys on Saturn. Unfortunately most I'm dying for like Hyper Duel, Blast Winds, Terra Cresta 3D, any Gold Pack/Collection, are in the 100s and 200s and 300s. Sometimes you can get Radiant Silvergun on 360, Ikaruga on Switch, Battle Garrega/Dangun Feveron on XBox 1 etc etc...good for the die hards like me that wallets are hurting and you'd rather not emulate. You taught me a few today and thats a real treat when I feel like theres little left to learn, very cool!!!

Thanks Darren, this was a long time coming but ended up being more of a serious affair than if Stardust had been gracing the vocals. Not that I didn't try. There's a whole audio track lying unwanted on the floor, gathering (star)dust. Have a great xmas dude! Liked your B&O speakers vid. I've been running a pair of speakers off my super gun recently - even though those bangers have great onboard speakers, nothing quite beats the real thing.

Glad to see you back, especially since I tuned into your channel after you were on the RetroRejects and a little while later 'retired'. But, just like Michael Jordan, you can't keep one of the greats away from the game too long ;) I am a novice in shooters by comparison, but now it's really tempting to get a Sega Saturn... So many on that system and the Turbo as well! I grew up with the SNES and have since been informed it didn't get very many shooters... I still really enjoy UN Squadron but am on the hunt for similar/broader experiences. Cheers!

Yay you're back! Great video - I really need to pick up one of those HSS-0130 Astro panel sticks. I've got a couple of the 0136 Virtua Sticks, but they're not quite the same.

Thanks for turning this into an actual video. Now I can shut up all the Saturn non-believers with just one youtube video. You're a great person, you. I ordered Kingdom Grand Prix this month! Can't wait to eat it up! Hyper Duel, Kyuukyoku Tiger, Cotton and Blast Wind are the only real expensive ones I'll sadly be passing on. I'd rather have Batsugun, Battle Garegga, Radiant Silvergun and all the reasonably expensive ones. ...and I also need to save up for PS2 Ibara still.
Brilliant stuff - you can also point them to the Racketboy web page with most of them on. I didn't use that page for this video though, didn't want to be influenced. You're probably right passing on Hyper Duel and Blast Wind if you want to get the other really expensive ones.

Bizarre. My top 50 for Saturn is similar to your pick minus your lack of love for Metal Black. Hyper Duel has to be near the top for me. Truly is a masterpiece & would be considered one of the first "Remastered" shooters that has two games in one. Saturn Mode for Hyper Duel is truly mind blowing compared to its arcade counterpart. It is an honor to see a fellow shooter collector like myself, sharing the same passion.
Nice vid. Enjoyed that. Got to love those Saturn shooters! Overall I'd have to say I agree with your choices there with one or two minor changes perhaps. Blast Wind is one I don't have and given the price tag and some mixed reviews I've been debating adding it to the collection....given its high placing in your top 50 I'm assuming you'd recommend it??
Which way, do you like the look of Blast Wind? It's a shame it's not proper tate vertical but apart from that it's quite tidy. Gave it a high rating because it kind of feels original and crunchy, like every Technosoft game really. Thanks for watching anyway.
Well your review kinda made my mind up as I value your opinion + I'm a big Technosoft fan which helps. It's one of the last shooters I'm after which is down to a combination of the fact I wasn't totally sold on it and the increasingly steep price..just wasn't completely sure it warranted it however after some deliberation I've decided it's got an old school 'blastey!?' feel to it and I like that in a shooter!
Incredible video! I upgraded my youtube so I could watch it at half speed. I would love to see your opinion, and if it would change with price taken out of the equation. I know this could never happen because: 1, you have put so much work and time into this video, it would be insane to try and do it again. 2, you paid for the games, so even if you tried, it would still color your opinion. Again , thanks for all the time and work you put into this video. It is an invaluable reference for anyone who wants to get into saturn shmups. I honestly don't know how you put a number on each game. I could spend the rest of my life trying to do that.
That's a very interesting concept. In a way, the price factor was only important in boosting a couple of cheaper games which were also good games anyway, into top 20 positions, and relegating the odd good but not brilliant game from a top 20 position into something lower. It wouldn't affect the top 10 anyway, since it's my opinion that the truly great games are all worth the money, albeit a lot in some cases.
+G Ryen Get ready to fatten up your wallet too. Lol. Love the system , but some games are criminally overpriced. Not saying they are not worth it , you just would have to skip paying rent that month.
A japanese saturn with a giant stack of import shooters, doesn't get better. I wish I knew about all of the amazing imports back when the saturn came out. great vid!

Feel like I've cooked up a good curry which will keep in the fridge for a few weeks, and can then compost the garden. Basically this will keep me going until the next challenge, which I think Craig has laid down - the top 20 shooters of all time.
Really dig this, I know nothing about Saturn shooters. My fav shooter is progear on cps2, just adore the style and theme of it although it's quite an easy one to beat
a few surprise placings but nothing as controversial as the previous top 50 list, nothing for everyone to get their knickers in a twist over again ;) glad to see the vid finally made it.........would there be any possibility of a top 20 shoot em up list from across all the systems including arcade ? to see who would be crowned king of kings :)
You've certainly been busy this year C, getting all those shooters including the wonderful Harmful Park, which I have yet to make a video on. Your suggestion is spot on. A top twenty across all systems including arcade - you're on! Stardust will do that one too, as I won't be making it in such a serious way as this one, which I have been planning for years. Glad I didn't put anything too controversial in there, wouldn't want to get any abuse from fanboys would I?!

Whats up Matt!! I've watched this like 3 or 4 times. lol. Couple random questions for you dude. Are most if not all your games shooting games? Do you play platformers , rpgs etc? You said a couple years ago you don't buy modern consoles, you pretty much stick to retro, which is cool in my book. I LOVE me my shooting games, been playing a lot of Darius Gaiden ( very underated game) on OG Saturn and loving it, but I do like to change up genres. Anyway just a random question . Peace.
+lightsouthaha hey there buddy. Yes I have heard of the new Darius and while its great to have a new game in the series, I just am not a big fan of the graphics. I LOVE me some sprites and IMO Darius Gaiden is one of the best looking 2d games. Also the fact that the new Darius is digital only throws a wrench in it too. Im a child of the 80s , so I don't know what I'll do when gaming becomes all digital. As far as futurematt not responding, I don't take any of that personal. It is nice when someone answers your question of course but I've learned to take everything with a grain of salt as they say. Its the internet afterall. Peace.
+lightsouthaha Thanks for the info, but Darius Gaiden uses all 2d sprites and it play strictly on a 2d plane. You may be referring to G Darius which does use 3d polygons. Also some games use both like Radiant Silvergun, but as far as Gaiden goes, it uses big , chunky, beautiful sprites. I myself never grew up playing anything pc. Ive always been a console guy, but I see your point. Many times its way cheaper playing on Steam than it is tracking down a console shmup. Prices of retro games keep going up. Is the bubble ever gonna burst? Anyway have yourself a good day.
+lightsouthaha I have never played a Toaplan shooter before. I do wanna eventually get Batsugun in do time. You know when you have adult responsibilities , family and things like wanting to be a home owner in 2-3 years gaming sometimes has to take a back seat my friend. Plus I got a shit ton of backlog games. STGS and non-STGS. Man, I got games that will last me the next 5 years. lol. Theres just too much I want to play that the only way I'll ever catch up is when I'm retired with nothing to do, but playing my video games on my rocking chair. Peace.
Unfortunately, Gekirindan has issues with the gameplay compared to the original arcade (i.e. the space colony in the first stage doesn't rotate completely)...
Soukyugurentai is an okay game. I wouldn't put it as number #1 but it does have it's charm for crisp graphics, game play, strategy and music. My only problem is that the game is too short.

Holy smokes do some of these games get expensive! I am very happy to have picked up a Saturn though, and have been getting into all kinds of games on it, including shooters. I LOVE the shmup genre, but even with all that's available on the Saturn, I felt a little void with there being no R-Type on the platform. Just seems like somethings missing! Wouldn't something like R-Type Leo fit right in on the Saturn? Great list btw, although I felt the Salamander Deluxe Pack could have been a bit higher. Then again, I am a bit biased and grew up on Life Force and Gradius type shooters from Konami ;)
+Decibel FX Thanks for watching this. You're right; Leo would have worked perfectly. Irem put out a few games on the Saturn but only through X'ing, so I guess they couldn't afford or be given the license to put out R Type, maybe Sony had got an exclusive or something.
I featured Fantasy Zone somewhere in the 30s but you're right I completely forgot about those other ones (and there's a couple of totally obscure ones like Arcade Gears Vol 1 Chariot and Konami MSX Collection). Is Sega Ages Fantasy Zone different?
futurematt5 Oops my mistake! Sorry, you did mention Fantasy Zone which was part of the Sega Ages label released in Japan along other Sega classics like After Burner II, Galaxy Force II, OutRun, Power Drift, Space Harrier, etc.
Great video, very well put together. I'll have to look a few of these up. Although Im not at shooters I do love the classic 10 min time waster games and these are perfect for that.
the top 5 that I own tho I love layer section #1, #2 tiger 2 plus, #3 blast wind, #4 xmultiply, #5 donpachi. I only do import as that's the best way and only way to get your hands on many great arcade titles at the time. I just got cotton boomerang not that much difference than 2 imo but I need hyper duel sengoku blade and night striker s not many more to finish my whole Saturn collection of imports.

Suokyugurentai at number 1, nice..not many people acknowledge that game despite it being brilliant, that's a refreshing change from the predictable radiant Silvergun always taking top spot.
BTW here's one of my favorite shooters, unique in everyway...yet it never made it onto ANY console ANYWHERE as far as I know...I've played it on my 10k plus game Xbox monster emulator....Boogie Wings. Check it out, has that silly rag time early 1920s music to it with that humor and style, and an eco fighters/X Multiply type little extra grapple bomb mechanic, you can run as the guy w a pistol when you ship blows up and PLENTY of unique pick me ups and huge unique interactive levels. Check out BOOGIE WINGS!!! Why isn't there any port :( So many bad arcade games got something, this deserves some love!
Metal Black's sound is rated 6 ? I don't think you played this game. No offense but if one thing was amazing in Metal Black is the OST, it's quite known actually.

Yay you're back! Great video - I really need to pick up one of those HSS-0130 Astro panel sticks. I've got a couple of the 0136 Virtua Sticks, but they're not quite the same.

Hyper Duel, Kyuukyoku Tiger, Cotton and Blast Wind are the only real expensive ones I'll sadly be passing on. I'd rather have Batsugun, Battle Garegga, Radiant Silvergun and all the reasonably expensive ones. ...and I also need to save up for PS2 Ibara still.
Brilliant stuff - you can also point them to the Racketboy web page with most of them on. I didn't use that page for this video though, didn't want to be influenced. You're probably right passing on Hyper Duel and Blast Wind if you want to get the other really expensive ones.

Bizarre. My top 50 for Saturn is similar to your pick minus your lack of love for Metal Black. Hyper Duel has to be near the top for me. Truly is a masterpiece & would be considered one of the first "Remastered" shooters that has two games in one. Saturn Mode for Hyper Duel is truly mind blowing compared to its arcade counterpart. It is an honor to see a fellow shooter collector like myself, sharing the same passion.

Nice vid. Enjoyed that. Got to love those Saturn shooters! Overall I'd have to say I agree with your choices there with one or two minor changes perhaps.
Blast Wind is one I don't have and given the price tag and some mixed reviews I've been debating adding it to the collection....given its high placing in your top 50 I'm assuming you'd recommend it??

Which way, do you like the look of Blast Wind? It's a shame it's not proper tate vertical but apart from that it's quite tidy. Gave it a high rating because it kind of feels original and crunchy, like every Technosoft game really. Thanks for watching anyway.
Well your review kinda made my mind up as I value your opinion + I'm a big Technosoft fan which helps. It's one of the last shooters I'm after which is down to a combination of the fact I wasn't totally sold on it and the increasingly steep price..just wasn't completely sure it warranted it however after some deliberation I've decided it's got an old school 'blastey!?' feel to it and I like that in a shooter!
Incredible video! I upgraded my youtube so I could watch it at half speed. I would love to see your opinion, and if it would change with price taken out of the equation. I know this could never happen because: 1, you have put so much work and time into this video, it would be insane to try and do it again. 2, you paid for the games, so even if you tried, it would still color your opinion. Again , thanks for all the time and work you put into this video. It is an invaluable reference for anyone who wants to get into saturn shmups. I honestly don't know how you put a number on each game. I could spend the rest of my life trying to do that.
That's a very interesting concept. In a way, the price factor was only important in boosting a couple of cheaper games which were also good games anyway, into top 20 positions, and relegating the odd good but not brilliant game from a top 20 position into something lower. It wouldn't affect the top 10 anyway, since it's my opinion that the truly great games are all worth the money, albeit a lot in some cases.

Thanks Dal, really please you enjoyed it, wouldn't have wanted to put something up sub-par after all this time. Feel like I've cooked up a good curry which will keep in the fridge for a few weeks, and can then compost the garden. Basically this will keep me going until the next challenge, which I think Craig has laid down - the top 20 shooters of all time.
Really dig this, I know nothing about Saturn shooters. My fav shooter is progear on cps2, just adore the style and theme of it although it's quite an easy one to beat

You've certainly been busy this year C, getting all those shooters including the wonderful Harmful Park, which I have yet to make a video on. Your suggestion is spot on. A top twenty across all systems including arcade - you're on! Stardust will do that one too, as I won't be making it in such a serious way as this one, which I have been planning for years. Glad I didn't put anything too controversial in there, wouldn't want to get any abuse from fanboys would I?!

Whats up Matt!! I've watched this like 3 or 4 times. lol. Couple random questions for you dude. Are most if not all your games shooting games? Do you play platformers , rpgs etc? You said a couple years ago you don't buy modern consoles, you pretty much stick to retro, which is cool in my book. I LOVE me my shooting games, been playing a lot of Darius Gaiden ( very underated game) on OG Saturn and loving it, but I do like to change up genres. Anyway just a random question . Peace.
+lightsouthaha hey there buddy. Yes I have heard of the new Darius and while its great to have a new game in the series, I just am not a big fan of the graphics. I LOVE me some sprites and IMO Darius Gaiden is one of the best looking 2d games. Also the fact that the new Darius is digital only throws a wrench in it too. Im a child of the 80s , so I don't know what I'll do when gaming becomes all digital. As far as futurematt not responding, I don't take any of that personal. It is nice when someone answers your question of course but I've learned to take everything with a grain of salt as they say. Its the internet afterall. Peace.
+lightsouthaha Thanks for the info, but Darius Gaiden uses all 2d sprites and it play strictly on a 2d plane. You may be referring to G Darius which does use 3d polygons. Also some games use both like Radiant Silvergun, but as far as Gaiden goes, it uses big , chunky, beautiful sprites. I myself never grew up playing anything pc. Ive always been a console guy, but I see your point. Many times its way cheaper playing on Steam than it is tracking down a console shmup. Prices of retro games keep going up. Is the bubble ever gonna burst? Anyway have yourself a good day.

You know when you have adult responsibilities , family and things like wanting to be a home owner in 2-3 years gaming sometimes has to take a back seat my friend. Plus I got a shit ton of backlog games. STGS and non-STGS. Man, I got games that will last me the next 5 years. lol. Theres just too much I want to play that the only way I'll ever catch up is when I'm retired with nothing to do, but playing my video games on my rocking chair. Peace.

Soukyugurentai is an okay game. I wouldn't put it as number #1 but it does have it's charm for crisp graphics, game play, strategy and music. My only problem is that the game is too short.

Holy smokes do some of these games get expensive! I am very happy to have picked up a Saturn though, and have been getting into all kinds of games on it, including shooters. I LOVE the shmup genre, but even with all that's available on the Saturn, I felt a little void with there being no R-Type on the platform. Just seems like somethings missing! Wouldn't something like R-Type Leo fit right in on the Saturn?
Great list btw, although I felt the Salamander Deluxe Pack could have been a bit higher. Then again, I am a bit biased and grew up on Life Force and Gradius type shooters from Konami ;)
+Decibel FX Thanks for watching this. You're right; Leo would have worked perfectly. Irem put out a few games on the Saturn but only through X'ing, so I guess they couldn't afford or be given the license to put out R Type, maybe Sony had got an exclusive or something.
Amazing list! The only ones I can think that you didn't include were Capcom Generations 1: 1942, 1943, 1943 Kai and Sega Ages: Fantasy Zone
I featured Fantasy Zone somewhere in the 30s but you're right I completely forgot about those other ones (and there's a couple of totally obscure ones like Arcade Gears Vol 1 Chariot and Konami MSX Collection). Is Sega Ages Fantasy Zone different?
futurematt5 Oops my mistake! Sorry, you did mention Fantasy Zone which was part of the Sega Ages label released in Japan along other Sega classics like After Burner II, Galaxy Force II, OutRun, Power Drift, Space Harrier, etc.

the top 5 that I own tho I love layer section #1, #2 tiger 2 plus, #3 blast wind, #4 xmultiply, #5 donpachi. I only do import as that's the best way and only way to get your hands on many great arcade titles at the time. I just got cotton boomerang not that much difference than 2 imo but I need hyper duel sengoku blade and night striker s not many more to finish my whole Saturn collection of imports.

Suokyugurentai at number 1, nice..not many people acknowledge that game despite it being brilliant, that's a refreshing change from the predictable radiant Silvergun always taking top spot.
BTW here's one of my favorite shooters, unique in everyway...yet it never made it onto ANY console ANYWHERE as far as I know...I've played it on my 10k plus game Xbox monster emulator....Boogie Wings. Check it out, has that silly rag time early 1920s music to it with that humor and style, and an eco fighters/X Multiply type little extra grapple bomb mechanic, you can run as the guy w a pistol when you ship blows up and PLENTY of unique pick me ups and huge unique interactive levels. Check out BOOGIE WINGS!!! Why isn't there any port :( So many bad arcade games got something, this deserves some love!
