  • Last year I posted a video analzying Lea Michele's performance of "Don't Rain On My Parade" from Glee. In my recent NYC trip, I saw her play the role of Fanny Brice live onstage... and she really was that amazing! Here's why!
Check out my video analyzing Lea's performance on "Glee":

I’m so happy that she’s getting the recognition she deserves. It breaks my heart that she couldn’t be nominated for the Tony.

Lea Michele was SO GOOD in Funny Girl that it defies nature. She is so talented...I cannot wait for her next star turn. Perfect pitch....timbre...acting.....timing.... just perfect! BTW, the show has earned $100 MILLION dollars so far! Unreal.

I loved Lea Michele in the Fanny Brice role. I wish I could see it again. I also wish there would be more pro shots of these amazing performances ❤️

I also LOVED Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat! And I yes the mustache is supposed to fall off. Lea just acts the hell out of it and makes it so believable lol

Lea was amazing. She made me laugh and cry at the same time. Thank you for every dance step, lights, chords of the orchestra, makeup and above all costumes. Thanks for the amazing stage. Funny Girl in AUGUST WILSON THEATRE forever!

I agree. She’s incredible. Saw in last Sept when it was 2 hours and 50 mins. When I saw her again last week, it’s down to 2.5 hours. The pace has really picked up and she’s totally embodying that character.

Thank you so much for this review! I saw her performance in October and again in February, and it was just magical! She was amazing, and I was totally captivated the whole show: Lea, Ramin, Tovah, and Jared are all just brilliant! It’s a shame that this was not the cast from the very beginning.

I wish they would have recorded it for a streaming service like Hamilton on Disney+. I was fortunate enough to see it and Lea Michele was incredible. I'm sad she can't get a Tony for it.

This was awesome! Good to see you. YES! Leah is a POWERHOUSE! One has to be able to carry a show in that role and I like it she wanted that role so, SO, very much! 🎶 ❤

The mustache falling off is part of the schtick. She's brilliant in the role - she just brings you into her world and that all there is to that.

I saw the show in January and Lea was spectacular. On Glee, it always seemed like she was emulating Streisand. Now she is making the role and the songs he own. It was a performance I will always remember - right up there with Hugh Jackman in The Boy From Oz. It was thrilling to see Lea play the role she was born to play. She could even belt and ugly cry at the same time. The mustache was a bit but she sells it so well everyone believes it.

Beanie didn't even get a Tony nomination to begin with. LEA saved Funny Girl thankfully. I remember watching that Funny Girl Concert in 2002 with big stars like Sutton Foster and Julia Murney who are terrific, yet, no one was even close to the level of perfection of LEA. BTW, her NY accent was terrific, I know she is from NY/NJ originally, but she also even got the accent right, which she doesn't have when she talk normally.

I enjoyed this review. Re: the rumors of Lea being a terror on the set of Glee I am somewhat amused because "Rachel" always wanted to be like Barbra. I am currently reading a biography of Barbra who was a bigger terror than Lea could ever have been. A genius intuitive and driven performer, as well as awesomely talented. It sounds like Lea may be a perfectionist, too. I think she is singing better. She sounded a bit shrill sometimes when reaching for very high notes in Glee and I didn't notice that in the videos from this show .

i looked in google, youtube, yahoo, facebook, instagram, twitter, wikipedia, imdb. chris colfer, naya rivera, jenna uschowitz have NO full concert performances. they have only performed in limited time spans, and on tv with editing & production help.

Thank you for this honest review. I've been getting pretty tired of all those negative videos criticizing her past behavior & ignoring her growth.
It got pretty sad when you saw videos or insta posts of her FG cast members talking positively about her present behavior, getting so very little views but then those videos just harping about past behavior & ignoring impartiality & just adding their own personal feelings about her, getting so many views & comments encouraging all the hate.
Mind you that these creators I talked about also had made videos about truly despicable people in the past & nowhere did their personal feeling get in the way until their own Lea vids because they relie on that troll viewership.
That mustache bit that she did where it keeps falling off in Rat-tat-tat is actually scripted. There's a vid here on YT that was recorded on her 2nd month performance & she does that bit; where she hands the mustache to the conductor & then demands for the conductor to hand over their baton.
She actually helped bring in so many changes to her direction on stage; standing on the piano and being more hyper manic in ITGS, singing I'd rather be blue, getting dragged across the stage in His Love Makes me Beautiful, the mustache scene in RAT-TAT-TAT & some others I can't remember at the moment.
There was a review from a RUclipsr that said that Lea actually makes you believe the age progression of Fanny throughout the musical (i.e. young fame hungry fanny, slightly older successful Fanny & then the more mature wife/mother Fanny), and that's just the caliber of performance that she delivers.
People sometimes don't realize that the book for FG is really a mess & the only reason that it became so successful was because they had based the music around Barbra's voice & charisma and though some people, mostly Lea's detractors will argue about her past, her vocal technique (something she's only criticized about but yet Jeremy Jordan or Ramin Karimloo haven't gotten the same criticism since they also rely on that same squeaky technique) or that Julie is better they can't hate on her performances.
I haven't been able to head out to watch her live yet, but I already have my ticket for September 2nd so I can be witness to this historic performance.

Thanks for this, Mateo. I really loved Beanie in his role (and I know I am in the minority.) I'd be hesitant to revisit the show, and luke-warm on Lea Michele in the role. But this video makes me want to rethink my impressions. I'll be in New York soon and maybe I'll take your advice.

1: The exception to the Tony rule was Pearl Bailey, who replaced Carol Channing in "Hello, Dolly." She got a special Tony Award. ruclips.net/video/d4eS0x16v1k/видео.html
2: The mustache is supposed to fall off. It fell off opening night.
3: I saw it opening night. The audience was electric with Jonathan Groff, Harvey Fierstein, Zachary Quinto, etc. It was high drama; would she succeed in her dream role? She got 6 standing ovations - one after every big number. And the cheers at the end were deafening.
4: I still think the show itself has problems, but you go to hear the big songs.
5: The set design looks like it has a missile silo in the center. Very unwieldy.
6: Lea isn't Barbra. While her comedy is fine, Streisand is a much better natural comic.
7: Streisand still "owns" the role. There are a few parts the original performers own: Robert Preston "Music Man." Rex Harrison "My Fair Lady." Carol Channing "Hello Dolly." Patti Lupone "Evita." Lea is fantastic, but the role was created for Barbra and tailored to her unique talents. No one else will ever be quite as good.

Regarding her navigating being vocally tired (maybe). Younger actors need to lear to pace themselves. You always give what you *can* give and on any given night, that amount will be different. We are performers, not robots. An interview was given - I won't mention names - and the person being interviewed could have couched their take on giving a performance a bit more tactfully. You might be under the weather but still give a thrilling performance or you might save some of yourself because the show is three hours long and if you give everything in the first ten minutes, you'll have nothing left to give when the curtain falls.

I saw the Julie Benko performance instead of Lea Michele... and I was absolutely blown away. The "enraptured" feeling, as you put it, stayed with me consistently throughout both acts. She was just fabulous every which way.

With all the mess surrounding Beanie Feldstein and the Tonys, Ramin Karimloo as Nicky was robbed of a nomination. IMO, of course.

The show's a classic. Someone decided to jack the volume to maximum. I did not pay B'way prices to hear Queen or Led Zeppelin. And there never is any need for the singers to compete with the accompaniment. Musicals are easily the greatest proof that lyrics are the point of music. No lyrics, no story. The orchestra needs to tone it down by at least 50%..If I could get my $ back, I'd have gotten a refund for that reason and that reason only.

The mustache is falling off all the time now. It was an accident in Sept and people loved it. Now it’s part of the routine.
