Went to two different garages. One told me the sounds the engine was making was from running it low on oil. The other said sell it ASAP because the motor was junk. So I watched your video and your honda odyssey sounded like mine. So I took it into my Honda dealer. Got the belt and the belt tensioner replaced and it sounds like a new van again. I very much appreciate your videos. Saved me a lot of time and money. Thank you
Great video. My 07 Accord is doing the exact same thing. My mechanic of the last 30 years was thinking my engine is gone. I told him about this and he's going to take the cover off and see what he finds. We shall see. Thanks. UPDATE******* This was exactly what the problem was. Thanks for posting very much. 👍
Thank you for your Video! My friend who is a mechanic told me I needed a new engine because the sound was already a bad engine/valves. I reasearched the issue and found your video. The sound of a bad timing belt tentionair was similar to my 2013 Odyssey. I myself bought the timming belt tentionair kit and had my mechanic/friend replace all parts. When he was working on my car he was still telling me where to look for engines because the work he was doing on replacing the tentionair was not going to work. When all was set and done, my friend told me to start the car. THE SOUND WENT AWAY. MY VAN DID NO LONGER SOUNDED LIKE A MOTORCYCLE. My machanic friend apologized about 100 times for giving me a bad diagnostic. Thank you again for your video THE CAR DOCTOR. YOU SAVE ME A LOT OF MONEY.
I'm going throught the exact same thing now. Found this video. And what this man is saying is exactly what the mechanic who saw my vehicle said. Amazing! Thank you. You've earned my trust.
I purchased a genuine Honda OEM Made in Japan tensioner as a spare for my 2010 Pilot. It's astonishing how many repair facilities will try to upsell the repairs by telling a potential customer their engine is shot when it isn't. Thanks for the great info!
Great posting! I was about to take apart my valve cover chasing what I thought was a valve train problem, then after seeing this, I discovered my blown tensioner. Thank you!
Yep, my wife’s 06 Ody tensioner went bad after a month replacing the timing belt. Glad I kept the original Honda tensioner. I was sweating bullets thinking the engine was shot! This was my first timing belt replacement on a V6. Replaced the tensioner with no further noise or issues 👍
My 2008 Odyssey is doing this and I was for sure it was a rod knocking or a bad valve. I really hope this is the problem and it sounds like exactly like it does in the video so hopefully this is my problem and I don't have to tear my motor apart! Thank you so much for this video you are a saint!
Thank you so much for this detailed video. I had several ppl tell me I'm wrong about it being a tensioner. They all said it was a bad engine bearing and I was screwed. Nearly $200 and nothing I could do. This van is my way out of homelessness... Getting me too and from work and back to a shelter. I wish we had you here in Oklahoma!!!! Thank sir and God bless you.
Great show and tell video. My 06 started to rattle 6 weeks ago and it has driven me nuts. I thought it was my exhaust falling apart. Thanks so much! And now, to save some money.
The first TB job I did on my own 08 Ody I used genuine Honda parts. This was at 100K, and back in 2013. at 185K the Honda replacement tensioner started to make this noise, though nowhere near what your van sounded like. I had to go in about 25K early and do the TB/WP job. I now use the Aisin kit when I do these jobs for other people. The bearings are OE Koyo bearings, the OE water pump is actually made by Aisin, and the Aisin kit belt is a Mitsuboshi, which is what the original Honda belt was. It's pretty much an OE kit for a fraction of the cost. Aisin is the way to go on these cars.
Thanks for the info. I will look into that. Sadly I’m kinda stuck with the parts available here unless I want to wait for shipping. Be good to have one of these kits on the shelf anyway.
Glad to hear you are coping well with the earthquake.I remember one in about 1964 which caused a tidal wave and flood damage in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island. We are on a Fault. Interesting vid on the belt tensioner.
Aloha Tim. My sincere apologies for not getting our prayers to you, the whole family and especially to those in need much sooner. You're all in our deepest and strongest prayers. You've got the whole group (58 people) yelling out prayers for ya.
Thanks bruddah. We came out virtually unscathed. A building 600 feet away from the shop sunk about three feet. Some houses literally caved in. Must have been a wild ride.
This is a great video, Tim, with logical procedure and process. As soon as I heard one of these, the tensioner was my first thought, the sound and tempo is pretty unmistakable, even on different car lines, and number of cylinders, once you have heard it, But I'm not afraid to see what others have found for solutions This is usually caused by being in a hurry to reinstall a good hydraulic tensioner, and compressing it too fast, too much pressure, in the wrong position, or dirt on the tensioner shaft Kudos and God Bless!
Hey Tim, I'm happy that you and your family are safe and we'll. You are in my prayers and thoughts. Thumbs up to you and your video. I truly hope you have a blessed Holiday season.
Tim Glad you and family are all ok. You were the flrst thing I thought of when I heard the news. Logged on and saw your tour of the spilled shelves. Carry on and safe holidays! Mike from NY
Thanks Mike. Maybe I should send out envelopes full of some of these cotter pins and loose nuts laying on the floor as holiday greetings. Kill two birds with one stone. 😀
At 4:12 you almost gave me a heart attack!!!! If those wheel studs grabbed that long-sleeve work shirt, it could wind you up and give you a fatal thrashing. Happens fast, like a lathe accident. Please be careful.
Indeed, I had to do open heart surgery after I located the bad valve with my stethoscope. That’s why I get paid the big bucks...well, if you consider minimum wage big.
Great vid, I have the exact same problem, and I’m thinking about doing it myself. So the parts that you replaced were; the cylinder, water pump and the belt? Thanks!
Repairpal is an automotive repair estimate website; they also have an app. The estimates are spot on and It even breaks down the part replacement cost and labor cost. Hope this helps!
My Ridgeline has been rattling now for about a week. Sometimes it's loud and other times you can hardly hear it. Thanks to your video, I now know what it is. Lol my truck has 241k miles. Bought it with 26k miles on her and haven't changed much other than the oil, religiously. I'm going to contact the Honda dealership tomorrow for the parts. After talking to a friend Honda technician, the after market water pumps aren't a perfect match and tend to leak, sometimes. Either way, I'd charge someone, considering it takes about 4 hours, 500bux including tax. Parts not included. I'll ask the dealership what they charge. It'll be comical at the least. Hahahaha
Great video! My 2008 Honda Accord is making the same noise just not as loud “yet” lol. Can you please tell me what exactly you replaced. So I can buy those items.
Great video! I own a 2007 Honda ridgeline that when purchased had 125000 miles. 3.5 liter engine. I changed all those components asap since these are "interference" engines. Don't want to do a complete engine overhaul or replacement! How many miles on that vehicle??
I have a 2009 Pilot and the previous owner changed the TB at 102k in '16 (verified VIN at Honda dealer) and now I'm at 175k and I have this rattle but only when the engine is cold, then it sounds normal after warming up. Im wondering if I should go ahead and have the TB kit changed now or wait until the interval 🤔
First thing, Blessings Tim. Great vid 👍 While watching your video, I notice you had a shim. How crucial is it, and where does it go? The car didn’t have one when removing the parts, and curious to as why it didn’t come in the TB kit. I did the first TB and kit on the vehicle. After starting it for a minute and topping off the radiator and power steering pump, I went to turn on the heater on and the rpm’s dropped really low. Turned it off and notice my rpm’s are lower than it usually is at 1000 rpm’s. Would like to add the shim when I go back in there tomorrow to figure out why it’s dropping.
Dayco had an issue with the manufacturer of the tensioner a few years ago. Had the same issue. Replaced with OEM tensioner. Won’t buy Dayco tensioners anymore.
We are having this like rattling noise in our 2017 Honda Odyssey with 90,000 miles 5 years old bought it brand new off the lot and for some reason the Odyssey makes this rattling sound. It also says check parking sensor system but *knock on wood* never has given us a check engine light when the van rattles and we’ve never had to replace the ocm that I know off the only time the check engine light came on was when our ignition coils went out that was the only time the check engine light came on. Got it replaced van runs fine the parking sensors though don’t we have this light on that says check parking sensor system.
You’re the best buddy. No Hawaii this year but maybe next. I guess we are going to see the Wife’s family this time. Fla. that’s a long way away from Alaska.
another time i had a weird erratic noise like a bad idler bearing might make turned out to be the serpentine belt....the crank pulley had the belt off by two rows and the noise the belt ribs made while going over the misaligned pulley and ribs made the sound.....sounded like someone was erratically shaking a 10mm bolt in a medicine bottle.....realigned the belt and noise was gone.....never would have thought a belt would nake such a noise.
Pretty sure my tensioner actuator is shot. Belt, pump and pulleys were replaced, but not the actuator. Curious if it can be replaced without popping the belt cover. Replacement part pics show a "grenade pin" that looks to keep the piston compressed while installing, so not sure.
@@skeptical5803 A local independent shop charged me $850 to install a timing belt kit which included a water pump, timing belt, guides and the tensioner.
I just had my motor replaced and it's making the same noise, I feel like if I pay 4000 the motor shouldn't be making any noise, I paid 1500 upfront but I haven't given the other 2500 should I tell him to keep it until the noise is completely gone?
I got same issues right now with 2009 pilot. My company auto mechanic said my engine is gone. But looks like I don't have to salvage my pilot after all.
Well I changed the tensioner and belt. That noise went away but I still have a noise that happens when accelerating. Almost sounds like a rod knock. Im really stumped as it just broke 100,

I wouldn't recommend that DIYers lean over a rotating rotor - if it catches your shirt, your not going to have a nice day.

I recommend them every 60k miles here. In very hot or cold climates 60k is normal.

Aisin is all I use anymore. I agree, the dayco stuff is total garbage.
unfortunately aftermarket look alike copies are cheap crap
Would that cause a battery light to turn on inside that dash?
I've seen aftermarket hydraulic tensioner fail at 40k , I will only use Honda parts , those engines bend valves when timing belts fail
Do you have to undo the crank bolt in order to replace the timing belt tensioner?
Or is it just a tensioner 2 bolts swap out then pull the grenade pin 📌 to set tension? Thanks sir
The tensioner can just be replaced. 2 10mm bolts.

But seriously -- glad all is well up there.
Haha, never knew how lucky we were to have a good reason to live in a pigs sty

Any time! Take care.
That oil on the timing cover is way too much even if all the tensioner oil was evenly spread over the cover!
👍👍
My 08 odyssey just started doing this
My check engine is flashing and it does that same noise
Yikes
Mine is making the same noise, only it’s a slightly lower pitch rattle/knock. Could it be the timing belt tensioner? I have a 2011
Did you get it fixed? If yes what was the issue?
Nice good thank you
