Federal Judge Restricts Idaho Wolf Trapping Over Grizzly Bears

  • Well,....I was afraid this was going to happen. Federal Idaho Judge Candy Dale shortened Idaho's Wolf trapping season by 4 months. The Anti-trapping folks used Grizzly Bears as an excuse.....feeble as it is, it worked. Not good news, but it could have been worse, Federal Judge Don Molloy limited Montana's wolf trapping season to just 1 1/2 months, Idaho trappers will still have 3 months....all in the toughest weather conditions of the year....
    Anyway....here's the scoop.....

Once again the government is dictating what a private land owner what they can and cannot do on their property !
    That begs the question ...
Do we really own anything or are we really free if the government can restrict, confiscate, jail or fine you

The State of Texas has just demonstrated that the Federal government has no jurisdiction over the will of the people in Texas. Texas is now securing it's own border. Those wolves were shoved down the throats of the Western States via paid off politicians through lobbyists.

Good morning Gary. I totally agree that Judges who do not reside in the state should not have the power to make decisions about what the state is actually facing. Sorry to hear that this has happened to you also. In my area in Montana we went from the 90 day trapping season to 45 days with the same argument from the antis. And our quota went from 82 to 52 in our region . Mont. FWP has appealed the decision , but no ruling yet, not sure what our season will look like for 2024 -2025.
Once the Grizzly is delisted that argument should be lame. We all have to get better at trapping in snow and freezing conditions , but the freeze thaw conditions make if difficult.

I can live with this, but I'm afraid it's just the start. They found something that worked, they won't stop now. This Summer, I'll put trail cameras out everywhere I can and try to find out where they will be. Get the snowmobile out and running as best as I can, and hope things all fall into place. • @MuskratOutdoors
      @MuskratOutdoors  5 месяцев назад +1

Did you watch this video and listen? That is what I said. Predator control when needed, is a must, no matter what time of the year. We should have the option of taking care of problems when they happen but real trappers trap for prime pelts. We trap for prime pelts, predator control, and animal number management. Traps are a tool, nothing more.
This is going to make things harder, but I'm OK with it.
Hunting is still an option, but much less affective. On a good day, a hunter can hunt maybe 12 hours, traps hunt 24 hours....each trap in each spot. A hunter can't be in a dozen places at once.

As to Indian tribes against wolf management, I think plenty of their ancestors killed wolves when they got too numerous and were killing off a lot of elk, deer, and the bison. If there was a year where bison weren't moving about as much or weather didn't allow going great distances to find them, they would fall back on the elk and deer for meat, can't do that if there are too many wolves. Also Caitlin's( I think that's the artist) painting of the Indians in wolf skins stalking bison, as depicted before they had horses, kinda tells you something too. In the eastern woodlands there were far fewer bison than the plains, and they def would have been culling wolves. To say that wolves have had no predators on this land is false. The native people were the predators. The alpha predators ALWAYS go after the competition in nature. Think of hyenas and lions, it's not a rivalry, it's survival. Coyotes kill foxes, wolves kill coyotes.

He told me that there are ten grizzlies collared here but an additional hundred or more that are not collared in the area. The area consists of the top of the Panhandle, east into northwest Montana and north into British Columbia. I also know the most active wolf trapper in this area and have never heard of him trapping a grizzly by mistake. Rulings by federal judges make you wonder how they even graduated law school? Whoa, I’ve made into a Muskrat Outdoors video! I’m officially part of the channel’s canon now!
Jokes aside, I’ve been thinking about this a lot, in combination with what you said in your response to my comment and in this video here.
Conservation groups have been pushing a lot of this stuff in the West lately. Don’t get me wrong, conservation is deeply important to me. But you have to ask the question of when conservation is turning into almost an extirpation of other wildlife when the animal they’re trying to conserve is having a negative effect on other wildlife populations, and thus the local environment.
What’s more, there is no grizzly populations near Salmon, the closet being either the Bitterroot Recovery Zone (which has no actual population) or Yellowstone. Just because maybe every few years a lone grizzly walks through that wolf trappers and ranchers have to suffer? I can understand up in Boundary County, where their permanent population is +\- 40. But in Lemhi County where the permanent population is… 0? Total hogwash. This isn’t about Grizzly Bears, we all know it. Sights had been set on Idaho to get rid of wolf trapping and hunting for years now. They finally got their “justification” to curbing it, to some extent.
I haven’t been here my entire life, but I take your word for it (along with many old timer hunters here) that elk populations just aren’t what they used to be. When you go into the mountains in your videos, you don’t see a lot of elk. Or if you do, the numbers are small. I feel like you see deer even less.
I’d be really interested to see the deer and elk populations now and thirty years ago to see the difference reintroduction has had on their populations.
The key in conservation is balancing populations of all critters in a ecosystem, not unleashing the reintroduction floodgates with tons of critters without allowing the ecosystem to naturally adjust overtime from it to find that balance. We don’t seem to have hit that balance.
But what do I know? I’m just a RUclips anon, not some wildlife biologist.

You are 100% Right! Thank you again for telling me about this. I heard it from you first. That's the part that makes me the most upset...management. Too many, expand the season, too few shrink the season. Wolves included. I wasn't for putting them here, but now that we have them, I like having a few around. The Extremes on either side really need to quit squabbling , meet in the middle and actually manage the wildlife.....all of the wildlife! Deer, elk, moose, wolves and even hunter numbers. This playground stuff needs to stop. It's not good for any of the wildlife, or the people.

They haven’t cut back on the logging which destroys the habitat but it’s easy to go after the trapper as the general public doesn’t like trapping. When you add wolves into the mix, the general public goes crazy over any type of wolf kill regardless. It’s a fine line we trappers have to play with. It seems to me that first of all 200 bears for Idaho doesn't sound like they are endangered, threatened maybe but not endangered. Secondly, a solution might be to break up the area into zones & manage by zones. Different seasons for different zones with some areas being less affected that others. That's what is done in this neck of the woods. Hope this helps. My advice is have a few Jack Daniels & ponder it.
