  • Today we celebrate the first day of summer, the summer solstice. I'm sharing what my family does to celebrate the changing of the seasons. It is one of the things I’ve started doing to enjoy life more. It has been 3.5 years since my pacemaker surgery and I've started doing the things I always wanted to do, but didn't seem to find the time for. In this video I talk about some of the side effects from getting my pacemaker implanted. These aren’t the problems I’ve had with it, I covered that in this video.

The side effects I’m talking about are the unintended changes in my life after getting the pacemaker.

I'm very glad that you are still doing OK. I had promised in previous replies to keep responding to your posts, so here is yet another one.
I built my own photo/video studio in my home in 2019 and finished it just about the time for COVID-19 to arrive. It is a "Bucket List" item, since I have always wanted my very own studio. Because of COVID-19, I haven't had many wanting their photos taken, since the studio has been finished.
Tomorrow morning, June 21, I'll be going to the park on the other side of town to do a photo shoot. Hopefully, I have not forgotten how to do photo shoots outside, because have done only one in 2020, and it was my grand daughter's wedding last October. Tomorrow I'm going to find out just how good that I still am. I have a folding wagon and will be hauling all of my photo gear in it and setting it up myself, doing about a 2 hour shoot, and then reversing the process to get it all back in the car. Lately, I'm finding that my walking distance between rests is getting shorter and I'm limited to about 150-200' between needed stops now. I recover in just a few minutes and then can repeat the walk for about the same distance again, but my age and condition is affecting me greater now. At 79 I keep telling myself to keep going, but it's getting harder and harder to follow this internal command recently.
Take care, and enjoy your backyard camping trip / celebration. These tend to have special meanings after the first heart problem.

Hi CharleL, Thanks for taking the time to share so much in your comments. I'm glad you were able to get one of your bucket list items done by creating your own photo studio. I hope you can get back to more photo shoots now that the country is turning the corner on COVID. I'm sure you will do fine with the outdoor shoot, it will all come back, like riding a bike. It sounds like you are still doing great at 79, I hope I can still be so active when I get there. Thanks for watching my video about the summer activities. I hope they are good memories for my daughter. Take care, and I hope to hear from you in the future.

Hi Kevin. I’m now 2 weeks post-op from my PM surgery. Had staples removed today (14 total). I’m glad you’re doing well and sounds like you’ve got some good ideas to celebrate summer solstice with family. It’ll be fun childhood memories for your daughter that she’ll alway remember.
I planted close to a hundred Giant Russian Sunflowers last year (2020) to enjoy. The birds and squirrels seemed to enjoy them as well. The deer ate some of the younger sunflower plants but many survived and grew beautiful sunflowers.
My granddaughter raised a smaller sunflower plant and was thrilled to see how it turned out so pretty. I love gardening but due to my bradycardia, I wasn’t able to do anything much. But now that I’ve got my PM, I’m looking forward to setting out a few flowering shrubs/rose bushes once I get completely recovered from my surgery of June 23, 2021. I was doing Hospice Nursing prior to my heart condition worsening.
I enjoy water painting and acrylic painting with my granddaughter. She so much fun to spend time with.
When I was younger in my 20’s we enjoyed taking our son and daughter camping during the summer and sometimes in the fall. They loved it! We did campfires where they’d roast marshmallows over the campfire. Always fun grilling and cooking food outdoors when camping. And boat riding was always fun.
They’re both grown now with their families and stay busy with wok and with the children. My daughter has her son into Karate and she has a garden project going growing veggies. My son has a large yard project going on with landscaping.
I’ll be going for my 3 month device check in October. Have been doing well so far except my heart was constantly throwing PVC’s so my doctor instructed me to get some Slow Magnesium Chloride w/Calcium and take 1 twice a day and that would help with the PVC’s. It has helped a lot.
Have a fun and safe summer. Stay cool and hydrated.

It is good to hear from you, and I’m glad the medication is helping with the PVCs. Do you feel like you have more energy now that you have your device? Thanks for sharing about your camping trips with your kids, sounds like some good memories for all. I hope you can get some more gardening done as you continue to recover. I bet that the area around the pacemaker is still sensitive, but it should get a little better each day. I hope you have a great summer too!

Yes, I feel so much more energetic but taking it one day at a time. My energy level is great, just short intervals but length of energy increases with each passing day! And yes, incision site and surrounding area is really sensitive, especially to clothing. My advice to women getting a PM, be sure to have soft supportive bra that opens in front. The support from the bra will help avoid weight from bust pulling on the incision affected side of surgery. Also wear XXL soft button up tops or a large size to allow for plenty of room. Hope this info will helps other.

Yes, that will be helpful. It is great that you are sharing your own experiences so others reading the comments can benefit. That’s good information, thanks.
