my dad used to sing me this song after a bath before i went to bed whenever he was home (he was gone a lot) n my sister n i would always jokingly say NOO not that song again! i hope he knows that we didn't mean it n its one of my favorite memories. I love you dad n miss you
I appreciate this cover SO MUCH. I love The Sound of Music but my voice is much more of this style than it is musical theatre/vibrato. I've been searching for a version of this song that was a little more indie and I finally found it! Bloom and grow, forever♥
Edelweiss, Edelweiss Every morning you greet me Small and white clean and bright You look happy to meet me Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow Bloom and grow forever Edelweiss,Edelweiss Bless my homeland forever.
I know this sounds really weird, but I love to name one of my future children Edelweiss. I think it's such a beautiful name but anyone I tell about it thinks it's so strange. But, it had a built in song with it and it's such a beautiful way to show my heritage.
You could always do something slightly different. Adelise maybe. You know the name's origin and meaning. :) People could call her 'lise or Adel for short.
my mother sang me to sleep with this, and i sing my daughter to sleep with it now, love this rendition but when im feeling up to it i use the scale of the original.
My wife sings this song for my 2 year old son to fall asleep to. I play this on my phone for him When I'm putting him to bed since I can't sing like my wife.
could you sing the winner takes it all acoustic cover please please. I listened to all the existing ones and none of them (incl. the original by abba) really catches the essence.
I thought the song was not actually a Austrian folk song, that it was written for "The Sound of Music", did people in Austria adopt it after the movie came out?
She isn't trying to make it depressing, she is just doing it in a rendition that speaks most to her... I think it is beautiful. Life is also very hectic and crazy, so lets just enjoy the peacefulness, non depressing, characteristics of this song :)
@Miranda9VM this is probably the most heartbreaking comment on here; i'm austrian-born as well, working & living in the US for a couple of years now; our family histories are full of stories like your grandfather's, we're connected to our country for life, no matter how far we're away. i first watched "the sound of music" over here, because nobody back home knows it, & at this song i just burst out in tears; I know exactly what your grandpa felt. I hope you're doing well, God bless
That top comment sounds wonderful, however, Edelweiss isn't an Austrian folk song. It's a false myth that it is. Edelweiss is actually a song written and composed in 1959 for The Sound of Music. Unless your grandfather started singing the song after the production of the Sound of Music, I don't see how this could be true.
@Thefadingrain My hair goes like that if I wash it, put a tiny bit of mousse in, wrap it up and then sleep like that. In the morning I shake the twists out and then using my fingers which I've run under the tap, I 'shake' the hair and slightly dampen it. Looks great if it's mussed up a little. Just experiment - everybody's hair is different and I often wish mine was poker-straight, but then friends wish they had waves. (^ ^)
I'm nine on mum's phone. My mum would pick songs for here kids. This was my sister's who sadly past away before I got to see here. Now she's in heaven with everybody else.
Yes, I know. After WWII My grandfather went travelling around Europe a lot, he heard the song when the film came out in 1959 and always sang it. Mostly, because it reminded him of Austria, and he missed Austria, his home. When he grew much older he sung it to his granddaughter, aka...me :') He never returned to Austria...
My grandfather used to sing this song to me a lot, & since I’m part Austrian it meant a lot to him. During WWII he shot a Nazi who demanded he fight for Hitler, & was sent to a concentration camp. He said that when he grew up in the Austrian mountains, they were beautiful, with fields of edelweiss’s right outside his door, & as long as he sang the song he always remembered home. He said that if I ever felt sad or lost , i should just sing this song...and think of home too. But he recently died
This song is probably the most beautiful evocation of the love for one's home ground I have ever heard. My heart goes out to every person who cannot claim some part of this wonderful world as his true home.
Same here. when I was little, we used to go and visit my great-uncle Adolf in Argentina. He loved this song, but said that things in the war just did not go right and all he had was his memories of the boyhood in the Austrian Alps because for some reason he could never go back...
In my opinion, this is the closest and best adaption of this song. Edelweiss always has and always will have a special place in my heart. I can't explain it, but it evokes such emotion in me.
I have always loved this song. My mom would always sing this song to me when i was sad but instead of edelwiess, she would sing avalwiess. She would tell me to remember this song if i ever got sad and lonely. Now i sing it to my baby girl and tell her the same thing but i sing ellawiess.
Absolutely amazing! Your voice is just perfect and this style you sing it with suits you in every single way! I hope you go far in life and pursue music. :)
Her voice is the sound equivalent of either a) running your hands under soft sink water or b) things with rounded corners

Una de las canciones mas hermosas que he escuchado

This song is so peaceful and calm. I love it. I picture a mother singing this to her small child. :)
Perfect rendition - just spectacular
such a beautiful voice
Her voice is so hauntingly beautiful
I know this sounds really weird, but I love to name one of my future children Edelweiss. I think it's such a beautiful name but anyone I tell about it thinks it's so strange. But, it had a built in song with it and it's such a beautiful way to show my heritage.

This song is beautiful. rodgers and hammerstein really were geniuses.

Love her voice, so sweet, is like be falling like a leaf in a soft wind
Beautiful! Very sad that this was Hammerstein's last song before he passed from cancer.
Wow this is stunning

The Man in the High Castle brought me here.
Same with me. Wanted to hear it before I went to sleep
Very nice!
my mother sang me to sleep with this, and i sing my daughter to sleep with it now, love this rendition but when im feeling up to it i use the scale of the original.

could you sing the winner takes it all acoustic cover please please. I listened to all the existing ones and none of them (incl. the original by abba) really catches the essence.
so sad that "edelweiss" is the only german word in this song.
however, I love it.
This is one of the most beautiful renditions I have heard.
ooooooooh :)
I thought the song was not actually a Austrian folk song, that it was written for "The Sound of Music", did people in Austria adopt it after the movie came out?
This brings tears to my eyes my mom used to sing this to me when I was a baby. I remember every word to it by heart
She isn't trying to make it depressing, she is just doing it in a rendition that speaks most to her... I think it is beautiful. Life is also very hectic and crazy, so lets just enjoy the peacefulness, non depressing, characteristics of this song :)
Love your voice...Awesome job!! ;)
I know that it is a flower, but it is a german name.. I am german:D I should know that ... edel=noble ; weiss(-ß) = white
My mother used to sing this to me and my sister before we went to bed. My sister's gone now..beautiful memories tho :,}

I just pop in now and then to hear her sing this.........sigh.
Man I can't help but associate "Edelweiss" with the game Valkyria Chronicles where the hero drives a tank bearing the name. Pretty screwed up.
Where do I buy this? Didn't see it on iTunes
@SteveX1991 I know exactly what you mean. I can't help but get emotional when I hear it and I have no idea why.
this song is absolutely beautiful! definitely a classic favorite!
@Thefadingrain Wrap abit of hair around two fingers to make a loop then press it with a straightner :)
mükemmel.. edelweiss is a flower that is explainin why the earth is a wonderful place i think..
I always think of this song at the silliest times of the day...

my mom sang this to me as a baby to get me to sleep:)
@wtfpoptart my dad used to sing me to sleep with this song as well :)
This song is a show tune created in 1959 for The Sound of Music.
@ShanaaDiinosaurr cool fuckin story, bro
This is amazing, I have been singing this tune for years but never knew what it was. Found this cover and I am enchanted
Made me cry...

I can't stop pressing the replay button. Smh.
Beautiful rendition.
I don't like it when people do this "..."
she's so pretty.. and her voice is the loveliest voice I've ever heard. Im so jealous.. :(
Here is wonderful rendition of Edelweiss made in Austria. "Sigrid & Marina - Edelweiss (The Sound of Music) 2011" on youtube
that is so touching :) thank you for sharing
I have never had a song lyrically punch me in the heart like this cover has.
maybe the song itself just made him reminiscent? its not necessary that the grandfather sang it wile growing up
In my opinion, this is the closest and best adaption of this song. Edelweiss always has and always will have a special place in my heart. I can't explain it, but it evokes such emotion in me.
Does anyone know where I can buy this rendition of the song?
I have always loved this song. My mom would always sing this song to me when i was sad but instead of edelwiess, she would sing avalwiess. She would tell me to remember this song if i ever got sad and lonely. Now i sing it to my baby girl and tell her the same thing but i sing ellawiess.
my 12 y old daughter is about to sing this solo in a concert :)
She has a beautiful voice it's just the way she chose to sing this song that has got me confused.
HER HAIR is amazing.
i want to know how to style
it that way, but i can't figure it out.
GAHH.
Absolutely amazing! Your voice is just perfect and this style you sing it with suits you in every single way! I hope you go far in life and pursue music. :)
