@@jamesfrystak I’m not sure. I’ve never done a showreel. Perhaps once I get some better footage of wolves, herring spawn, great gray owls and a few more sea otters 😁
Beautiful shots and some stunning behaviour too. You live in an amazing country. My only concern would be that there is maybe not enough sequence (story) building shown?
This is awesome James. I just stumbled across your channel and I’ll definitely be going through all your videos later. I do have one question about showreels. Would you recommend adding audio to along with the clips, or just music like you have here? I understand how important audio can be to an impactful piece, so I’m curious if it’s necessary for personal work like this?
Great question. I started mixing sound into my reel and found it distracting with all the different animals and fast cuts. Also, I don't have a great stock library of high-quality sound so I choose to leave it out.
The hiring producers I talk to looking for camera talent often tell me they look at showreels with the audio off. I got my first big freelance break (a 12 month Antarctica shoot with BBC) with a 2 minute showreel with no audio on it at all. Not particularly recommending that, but worth noting.
Love you stuff. Question about frame rates that you're shooting. Looks like to be 120 then slow down as well as some 30p slowed to 90%. Did you put this on a 24fps timeline? I'm curious if you could let me know what your go to frame rates are and the timeline choice as well. Thanks so much in advance.
I use a 23.98 timeline. I only shoot 120fps when I'm filming birds in flight. The cameras I use have variable frame rates, and my go-to frame rate all depends on the action. If it is close and tight, I'll shoot 60-96fps, and if it's far and wide, I'll shoot 30-48fps. It really depends on the situation.
Ahh you got the red. Ok makes sense. A friend of mine (Will Nicholls) I think you might know him, suggested trying 30fps then slow it down 10% and putting into a timeline of 24fps. Makes it look dreamy but still real time believable.
Absolutely amazing James! Very inspiring for those of us that want to take that next step! Thank you!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!!
Super inspiring, excellent stuff James!

Absolutely awesome stuff buddy!! 👏👏👏

When are we going to get to see your reel?
Beautiful shots. The rainbow in the whale's plume is just super cool.
Thanks!! 😊

Gorgeous video, don’t understand why you don’t have about 7 million subscribers.
Thanks! And I'll take 7 million.
Superb! Well done!

Thanks for the feedback!! I'm already planning for next year's showreel and I'll give that some thought. Cheers 🍻
I guess it depends on the kind of work you're aiming for. I only know about TV/Documentary where sequences tend to be the main task.
@WildlifeInCloseUp that's my bread and butter.
Stunning footage! Is this all filmed in Canada?
Thank you!! And yes, all of this was shot in Canada.

@WildlifeInCloseUp that's awesome!! What shows have you worked on? Maybe we have been on the same series.

We call it "Taking the edge off," and yes, it gives a dreamy feel to it. @@andyarts8382
What camera are you shooting on?
I’ve got the Sony A7Siii with the sigma 60-60mm
Breathtaking footage 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks! I had a blast shooting it.
