Love that they kept the 5.0 in these and Exploer way after most of the V8s in Fords were the 4.6. Not a Ford guy but they're both great engines.

One of the best SUV’s ever made, the Ranger platform fit these superbly.

@@fernandorocha-dx1wv The Bronco II was junk & any Explorer generation after this has been pure trash. You’re forgetting to mention the Expedition too.

I always thought the trim on the Mercury looked better than the Ford's. When they really separated them in 2002 they really looked awful.

Too bad the Mountaineer could never compete with the Explorer. While Mercury got the Mountaineer, Lincoln got the Navigator a year later because Lincoln mercury dealers wanted SUVs to sell, mercury also got the mariner (glorified ford escape) for the 2004 model year and Lincoln got the aviator (glorified ford explorer) for the 2003 model year.

This generation Explorer started off terrible, my Aunt had a '96 and it spent almost as much time in the dealer as it did in her driveway. But, they really came around in a big way toward 2000, and I've known a few people to have great luck with '99-'01 Explorer and Mountaineer. Personally, I'd love a 2000 Mountaineer Premier with the V8 and AWD.

Justin Stewart it depends on how you maintain it I haven’t had any problems with my 1997 I work on my own and do not go to a mechanic or dealer that’s way too pricey

I am thinking how would look a Mountaineer based on the Ford Explorer from 1991 - 1994. I want to think in the light bar instead of grill from old Mercury cars like the first two generations of the Sable or the Topaz. :"D

I never understood why they thought this was distinguishable enough to sell along side the explorer when it’s the same car

Cadillac did the same thing in 1999 with GREAT success (Escalade) - It wouldn't work today but it definitely did then.

$35k and for $3k more, you could’ve gotten a comparable Tahoe or Suburban at the time.
