So who represents the Id? Also weren’t Freuid’s theories not really credible because there was no way of testing them, such as his Psychosexual theory? Regardless ,this was a well researched and well presented video. Great job!
it is stolen and the quality is sketchy , he doesnt care because hes an asshole . You can even see part of an authors signature poorly cut from the design so its acctually on the shirt . The artists have confirmed they arent receiving anything
I find it interesting that Jake was somewhat a better parent to Finn then he was to his own children. Jake was always leading Finn in the right direction and helping him grow up into the man he is. But he essentially abandoned his own children, he visited them on rare occassion, although later in the show Jake tried to develop a better relationship with his children and even his grandchildren.
Same; I haven't watched the show in a while and my memories are always that Jake would be into bad stuff if it weren't for Finn. I'm still not convinced after this episode. Jake cares sometimes, and other times he didn't even seem to care at all about Finn. Then he also up and abandoned his real kids, so not really like a parental figure. Seemed like Finn made Jake care much more than Jake being the constant voice of morality.
It’s interesting that while Jake is extremely laid back and functions as a father figure to Finn. Jake did the complete opposite with his real kids. Being laid back and letting your child learn in this manner is easier said than done. As a parent you truly want the very best for them, sometimes the best for them is letting go a little bit, unfortunately this goes against our natural behavioral pattern.
Excellent point, but I also like to think that the differences also correlate to their upcomings.Jake is more laid back and let's Finn learn on his own with only dropping wisdom when necessary is because he sees Finn in the middle of maturity. He's already started with the help of his dad, but is not quite there yet. So when Joshua died, he saw it fit to just fill in the necessary gaps for him to mature, while also letting him figure it out on his own. As for his kids, they were just born when he freaked out, they haven't started maturing yet and he has to start from scratch. Eventually when they grow up, you can see he's still trying because they're his kids, but also he's letting them be their own people without him interfering when unnecessary. Of course he gets carried away because he's that kind of dad, but he knows that he only needs to drop in when necessary.
Jake does a great job at parenting Finn. He acts silly during serious situations so Finn doesn't get stressed or worries too much. There's this scene in "Elements" where Finn gets angry at Jake for not taking the situation seriously and reveals that he is doing it for Finn's sake. "Don't you get it? I'm worried, too. I've been trying to distract you from all this, but that doesn't mean I'm happy with the way things are going." The most important thing to him in a difficult situation is to help Finn take it easy. "But you know what I've been thinking? What if we're dead? I didn't say it because I didn't want to worry you. I'm the big brother, so I'm supposed to keep it together." Jake worries a lot. Maybe more than Finn. But as the big brother, he feels like it's his responsability to be calm during stressful situations and support his brother no matter what. Finn is going through a lot of stress and guilt so he chooses to lighten the mood. It's pretty good parenting, even if a bit self-sacrifical.
So he's the more fun, couch potato, stoner version of Jiminy Cricket for the Adventure Time world? Neat! For a good time, ask yourself - What Would Jake Do? Edit: lol just as I finished this comment y'all compared him to Jiminy Cricket and basically said, yeah, he's the chiller, less bossy version. Way to go me. Good video!
Oh I love your Adventure Time characters as pieces of the mind series! Please don't quit it! I really wanna see your views on Finn, PB, Marceline and IK! Please please please don't stop! I miss this show so much :(
Finn and jake are literally hero emotionally and physically especially since wisdom comes with age it makes sense jake has a good bit of knowledge to tell
whatabout that episode where finns trapped by energy stealing gnomes, and jake keeps procrastinating with dancing bugs, joke cracking mermaids, and parties?
That's a sign of Jake letting Fin sort out his own troubles so he can learn from them. He is unintentionally not present but he still spends time with him in the beginning of the episode and then takes a back seat to Fin's adventure as he deals with his own problems.

But jake is totally aware of his problem and the bad consequences. He just isn't capable of control himself.
I know this is old but the Superego and ID are in constant fight and the who takes the final word is the Ego, which is based on the principles of reality.
Jake is the bro I always wished I had. LMAO I will always remember the scene where Jake admits to the marshmallow scamps that he too used to scam people out of $20 a day with the classic Three Card Monte/Shell Game as he attempts to reform their bad behavior, but when he finds out they make ridiculous money he wanders off in a daze questioning his life choices like "wow, $500 bucks... a day... wow."
Great theory but it comes to a head when you take into consideration the the episode "Furniture and Meat" from a season 6. In it you see Jake go absolutely batshit and start abusing the power of money when he learns that people will do anything for gold and jewels. Jake is driven mad with the power that he wields. So he's not really the moral center of Finn's world. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Jake is also the yellow comet, an active force in the world. He's the Bee along with the Butterlfy. He's the manifestation of social expectation and internal order, kinda like a bee. Goin with the flow and doin his part.
Moar! Moar! I can think of no channel I'd rather get the in-depth analysis Adventure Time so truly merits from more than this one. Please keep this series going!
Please do an episode on Nick's "Avatar: The Last Airbender" (the TV series, not movies). That show is too well-written, a lot of material for ScreenPrism to explore.
I love this analysis and particularly the comments on Jake's 'parenting style'. This is the style I aspire to; It's how I 'parent' those around me. I try not to tell people how to be by telling them what's right and wrong but I urge people to seek out what will make them truly happier. I've found most people are honestly happier when they get along with others and don't diminish them or themselves, so this leads to a moral behavior I consider essentially ideal. I plan on sharing this with my girlfriend since you seem to have found a lot of words for things I've been trying to get at for some time. Thank you so much. : 3
Right??? I'd give props to Hynden Walch for making me hate her after making me love her in Teen Titans, but the writers dont seem to believe that PB is capable of being hated or having questionable morals/decisions.
Idk, I feel like there's been times the episode was pretty clear that some of the things PB does are definitely not good and I'm pretty sure she gets called out on occasion? The problem is that the main characters are her friends, and especially with Finn's initial crush on her, it can be harder to acknowledge when your friend does something kinda messed up. Through the acting and animation, I never really felt like the writers weren't pointing out when PB has done something questionable. Our main characters just aren't the kind to usually go blurting that stuff out. Could also have something to do with Ooo being a little wonky with morality in general too? How much I like PB honestly fluctuates a lot, but either way I find her an interesting character in the same way I do Rick. Rick's a god-awful person but he's interesting.
Words cannot express how much I hate Freud. His theories have been entirely disproven by current psychological research, but using him to interpret literary texts is still a widely accepted technique in the field of literary study today.
1, thank you for connecting psychology with a simple to understand character. I got lucky in middle school to have found a random psychology book that was easy to understand! 2, I aspire to be a CHILLED Super Ego type...Doctor Who like. I've not seen Adventure Time.
I love this channel! Susannah you are so so so incredibly amazing at communicating. I hope that one day you write a book on aesthetic philosophy because I would read the shit out of it!!!
What I’m getting from this is that Jake is basically the 21st century version of Jesus Christ. Like Jake performs miracles, had wise sayings, and is basically morally perfect.
It's often kinda hard to make the bumbling dope the Superego because in many cases a dumb occasionally destructive character suddenly grasping a profound moral compass and shaming OTHERS for goofing generally ruins their innocence. They become more a self absorbed hypocrite who thinks only OTHER people acting up is bad, or acting up in a way that affects THEM. Dog from Catdog and Spongebob Squarepants are good examples of this practice, they dish out the stupidity but can't take it. I think Jake has a better balance of being a laid back idiot and still a 'wise and nurturing in their own passive weird way' sort. Like you said Jake isn't guilt slinging everyone else for acting as wacked out as he is, he's just TRYING to grasp the saner route for them, often in a supportive way rather than a judgemental way. You can buy this sort of character can be an irresponsible air head one minute and giving almost sagely ethical advise the next. I think Winnie the Pooh is another good example of this, the whole laid back 'not totally sure they're right' energy they both have I think plays a lot into it.

"People Aren't good or bad; they just make good or bad decisions"
"I choose......sandwich!"
The best decision
Jake is the best fictional character I've had the pleasure of seeing.
Hey, thanks. But I ain't fictional. Who's gonna make them superduperlicious sandwiches if I'm fictional?
@@jackthefrog80085 WOAH ITS JAKE WASSUP

“Your constant harassment of the female gender makes me sick.”
This one line always makes me laugh.
He described a sea of nice guys.
Huh... That was extremely interesting and well thought out. I looked at the title and thought it would be a stretch, but it fits perfectly.
Same; I haven't watched the show in a while and my memories are always that Jake would be into bad stuff if it weren't for Finn. I'm still not convinced after this episode. Danm this show is smart
John Gardner he didn't abandoned his kids they grew up fast and they didn't need him anymore
A stretch. Hahaaaa...
I literally think about how unbothered Jake would be whenever I get heated about anything

Great intelligent narrative coupled with weird, but meaningful animation!
Jake is my favourite character lol, thanks for the amazing video!
Jake's my favorite character to hence my pfp.
jake the dog has helped my mind find peace so so so many times.
Jake is the ultimate foreshadow tool , whenever he says something it comes true like finn and wild huntress
Beautiful episode!! Keep doing what you doing 😄
5:46 Jake's Batman impression. You're welcome.

DO NOT DO TIER 15. Don’t do it in the missionary position, don’t do it standing up, just... don’t do it, okay?
Great video! Excellent editing, insightful as they come, and funny to boot!
Jake is my favorite character. Awesome video guys!!
The Take does it again! … pull me out of a tremendous depression lol 😂

don't take everything as a sign of jake being a moral guide, the thing's more flexible than that, there's more themes explored in the show
or that time he encourages Finn to make Flame princess fight Ice king that
causes Finn's break up with FP
I know this is old but the Superego and ID are in constant fight and the who takes the final word is the Ego, which is based on the principles of reality.
"I choose sandwich!" 😂 (Really great video btw)
Jake is Finn’s brother but acts as an uncle (dad but not quite)
Jake is the bro I always wished I had. are you going to continue this series? this video was so good!!
This video changed my life
It's a shame that a magical, shape-shifting dog, who is voiced by Bender, is a better parent than most parents today.
Please make a marceline one, since the series ended, WE NEED MORE ADVENTURE TIME
Parenting goals
I need a Jake in my life.
2 years and I still waiting for the rest of the series
Please do an episode on Nick's "Avatar: The Last Airbender" (the TV series, not movies). That show is too well-written, a lot of material for ScreenPrism to explore.
Im 22 and still watching this
I guess i still need to define good and bad 😂😂
We could all use a Jake the Dog in our day to day
This is a great video
I wish The Take would continue these videos

I dont get how anyone can like Princess Bubblegum. She's basically the kid version of Rick but without any redeeming qualities whatsoever.
Osvaldo Castanon oooh that'd be an interesting vid. Why is Princess Bubblegum such a Rick?
Could be an interesting video, I guess. But I just cannot express my hatred for PB enough.
Yeah I hate her too. And you had to work hard to get me to hate Starfire
Right??? I'd give props to Hynden Walch for making me hate her after making me love her in Teen Titans, but the writers dont seem to believe that PB is capable of being hated or having questionable morals/decisions.

Can you guys continue this series? It’s been a long time and since Adventure time has ended you guys can now get the “full picture “.
Before notification! Great video girls!
Please make a video about Dr. Ford from Westworld.

Ice king:do you know what ice king means
YASSS YOU DID IT.
At least tv can give me good parental figures
im so glad other people see the freudian/jungian themes present throughout this series. Gosh i wish i had someone to talk to about this lol.
This is really good
I love this channel! Susannah you are so so so incredibly amazing at communicating. I hope that one day you write a book on aesthetic philosophy because I would read the shit out of it!!!
Thank you, this is like the cheapest therapy session 😂
I miss when this channel did essays on cartoon characters
Gracias
I really love this video
I liked this video, and liked it as well!
Bender is GREAT.
Going to start watching the show.
Very good analysis
He's basically God himself
Lovely video, as usual
Interesting interpretation.
What I’m getting from this is that Jake is basically the 21st century version of Jesus Christ. Like Jake performs miracles, had wise sayings, and is basically morally perfect.
Like one is only slightly more fictional than the other
Even then, he had to learn what's right and what's wrong to get to where he is today. Remember, Jake used to be a thief of sorts.
Somebody just told me I sound exactly like jake and I’m here trying to see if my voice is the same. Idk
I want the next installment so badly I'm having heart palpitations pls hurry
MORE MORE MORE
And yet the author has said Jake is the bro who gives bad advice. Heh
You guys are fun

when are you doing another video
Pour one out for the finale.
Will you make more of these? I'm excited to hear about Lemongrab next.
This has no playlist?
Kinda sad you didn't get yo cover the other ones
what happened to the rest of this series
