Thanks to you both for providing this generous content. Do you have a link for that right-angle light Tom uses when cutting at the bench? 🙏

Very nice. You made it look fairly easy, but I suspect it would be more of a challenge for this novice. But I enjoy watching and learning.

With all due respect to your skills as a tablesaw user, I must say that cutting DT with a tenon saw, a marking knife, a marking gauge and a bevel gauge is so simple, straightforward and requires absolutely no single-use type tools, not to mention a several thousand dollar table saw? I do this all by hand and by eye, no complicated jigs used or needed!

Having been in this business almost 40 yrs I can say with confidence I can do this by hand too as you say ( I used to win lunch a lot with my speed and accuracy). The problem is I cannot make a living at it even as quick as I am. Most modern clients also have different expectations when it comes to joinery- so the joints I cut when I was a 4th yr apprentice and seemed perfect to all who saw them are not appreciated as much these days by people with money, and those are the people I cater to. With respect, I would be a rich man if I had a dollar for every hobbyist who told me how good they were over the years. It's a different world.

@@kingofcastlechaos With all due respect is there a difference between a hobbyist and a devotee? I taught handtool woodworking for 15 years at the Woodwright’s Schhool in Pittsboro, NC. I still teach in my own workshop and at folk/craft schools in the SE. Two of my most popular workshops were Beginning and Advanced Dovetails. I have had literally hundreds of students take these workshops. Everything was by hand and by eye, and I can say with all assurance that students quite often came in assuming the degree of skill and attention was beyond their limits, but came out amazed at the straightforwardness of the process. Having said all of this, it totally resonates with me that as a professional, you need to meet your customers expectations in order to have a business and you need to have throughput! Thanks for the conversation!
