LOL, too funny the Bob Dylan thing! I kind of agree with you! Now seriously, in fact i think his harmonica lines serve his style and purpose pretty well. Actually, the bad thing about him is that for too a long time many thought THAT was playing harmonica, and nothing else. That's why a lot of people thought playing a handfull of sloppy chords and overplaying 4 bent was the thing. Fortunately, times are a-changing ;-)
Liked it a lot. Thanks. A request from my side, do explain/illustrate what is a GOOD Harmonica Player and/or a BAD one. With practical example/s, of course. Hope you seriously think it over.
I learned the hard way that harmonica isn't an easy musical instrument to play well, soaking a harmonica in alcohol or water DOESN'T make it more airtight, a fancier harmonica doesn't necessarily make you a better player and that your amplified sound is only a mere reflection of how you already sound, whether it is good or bad. The most important thing I learned a long time ago is that it is NOT a good idea to soak your harp in water, especially one made with a wood comb. This is why I prefer a plastic comb harmonica like a Special 20, a Lee Oskar Major Diatonic or a Hohner Golden Melody. Anyway, thanks a bunch for this informative video, Liam. I'm a big fan of your work, man. Do you play professionally in a band or is teaching your main source of income?
Great video Liam. Thought I'd touch up on myth #5 a bit from my own experience. When I started off I made the same mistake most make, thinking that a 6 quid harp is enough to get going but soon learnt that you really DO get what you pay for even in the world of harmonicas. After some research I bought the Hohner Special 20 ( actually on the same day I received my cheap "toy harp" ) which is highly recommended as a good all around starter harp and while I agree purely due to its reasonable price and responsiveness, for the life of me I just could not get on with it and found practicing single notes almost impossible with my gob ( that's mouth for all you non British ). One night I ordered a Marine Band in A because I wanted a different key and since they are pretty affordable, more so than the Special 20, I decided to go for it. When it arrived I was amazed how much easier I found it to be to play, so much so that a week later I ordered one in C to use it as my main harp, I do sometimes mess around with the Special 20 but I still find the classic Marine Band to be the harp for me and I can now understand why Mr. Adam Gussow sticks to these harps. So with all that said I guess my contribution to the list of myths would be... Not all mouths were created equal and what might work for most, may not work for you so if you're serious about your harping, expect to possibly go on a bit of a journey to discover which harp works for you. Be it a Hohner, a Suzuki, or a Seydel, it doesn't matter as long as it works for you but do stick to the proper brands I would say.
A myth I have heard is that harmonica playing makes you attractive to others......definitely false in my case LOL! Good post as ever Liam. Many thanks.
I asked for a D harmonica for christmas for £10 I love the sound it makes. I like the low f harmonica aswell. Ps. I can only play 2 songs and a half. Set up a patrion. I would sponsor you. Hi from Ireland Limerick
Thanks for watching and commenting! Hope you get the D harp for Xmas. I'm doing some trad Irish tunes soon so keep an eye out for those :) You can donate (and set up a regular donation via the button at www.learntheharmonica.com/free-lessons if you're able to spare some cash. Cheers! Liam
Have you ever experimented with solder to tune your harmonica? If yes, does it effect bending? Could it make a reed bend further? I'm really courius if it can make "bends" hit a real note.
Hi Ömer Yagci, the bends available depend on the musical 'distance' between the blow and the draw reed in any hole. So if you tune the blow reed down and the draw reed up to make a bigger gap between the notes, you can get a bigger bend between them. I've never used solder though! Cheers. Liam
This really made me laugh Liam, especially the Bob Dylan fact, he makes my ears hurt, absolutely crap and should never be let near our instrument .... oh and apparently the harmonica is just a toy (although according to a documentary I saw some while ago, it originally was developed as a toy in the 19th century) :)
Cool video, Liam. I got a question: I watched some of your garden concerts and it was great. To my ears your harp has sometimes a really unique sound. It almost sounds kind of dirty, if you know what I mean. I hope you're with me, because it's hard to explain. ;) So how do you get that kind of "dirty" sound out of the harmonica? Anyway ... see ya! BEST WISHES Patrik!
Great video buddy, may I make a polite suggestion, when promoting your channel, after saying like and subscribe, might be worth recommending the store in the link below the video, as you may see some extra income

Completely true.
Only if you play at the end of a rainbow 🙂
