I agree with you, Sara. The fact is that I can get wildly caught up in all the pre-writing work so it's worth mentioning that technically "only writing is writing" and if you don't write you never get anywhere. However, the quality of writing I produce vastly improves when I have outline/plotted/pre-drafted. All that "work" that he says isn't writing, is still productive/creative AND important to enhancing the quality of your work. So I'd say, yes, only writing is writing but WRITING isn't all that matters when creating a story. Getting to know your characters, practicing the voice, brainstorming, plotting, thinking about structure, or a story's multi-layered plot (external, internal, emotional), and on, and on. All that impacts the story too.
I liked his quote about fighting for your time to write, but I would take the word 'fight' out of such a mantra. If it works for you great, but our brains are very literal and appreciate details. To say you fight for something will invite more situations requiring you to fight for your time. I'd rather say that I 'make' or 'have and abundance of' time and finish it with 'because I prioritize the things that I am passionate about.' One of the main reasons I like your content so much is that you do focus on positivity and health as key aspects to creativity. It resonates, and embracing that attitude makes the daily grind an enjoyable journey. I kinda feel like this guy is a out of balance and focuses on a lot of negative things as motivators for reaching a goal. I've gotten more inspiration from Matt Foley, motivational speaker (that reference dates me). One thing he said I completely agree with. You ask 10 experts how to do something and you will get 11 different answers. Great video Sarah, and I hope you have a creative and productive week!
Personality-wise, I'm not a fan of his but I find that I do a lot of similar things as him. I edit as I write. Each day, I go back and read through, I don't always rewrite, but I always make one or two changes. It's way easier for me mentally to do it this way because the one time I wrote without much self-edit, I got overwhelmed by editing the whole thing at once, so much so I haven't looked at the story for months because it's too overwhelming.
Same. Re-reading what I wrote the day before gets me in the right mental space and editing what I catch then helps me have a little bit less to edit later. I have also writen zero drafts and the idea of having to fix that utter mess is far more paralizing than something I have been chipping away at. lol
I am also a rewriter. But have a different workflow:
I quickly read my work of the previous session to know where I was. I accept it's not perfect. Then I do my session for new content.
When I end my session of new content I rewrite my previous session to add cohesion and e.g. put some small hint or clue in it for plot or develop a character a little.
This keeps me flowing on new content while keeping the story in check
Thank you for sharing your take on these wonderful courses. It adds a dimension to what I ( and I am sure others) have gleamed from hearing our most successful colleagues discuss.
I find going editing what you have previously written a great thing to do if I am feeling stuck. I agree with the running start analogy. It makes it easy to pick up the thread and get back in the flow. I find my desperation from the fact that a great story has taken over my brain and insist that I write it.
Really enjoyed this video, thanks for sharing!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good morning, Sara and I hope you had a great weekend. Have a lovely day and happy writing. ❤
Thank you! You too!
@@SaraLubratt Thak you! ❤
this was awesome. I tend to not react well to tough love type of coaching but i hear what he is saying. Although I do believe for an endeavor like this, there are many ways of approaching it. Thank you for this video, it was really helpful.
Thanks for watching!
Thank youf or your review, very interesting to see the perspective of Harlan Coben's on writing.
:)
I wasnt familiar with his work before. Not finnished the video but he comes off very agressive and a bit arrogant. Not sure I could sit through his whole course tbh.
Edit OMG just got to the part where he gets mad at himself and berates himself. No wonder he's so angry. This is cyclical. That man needs a hug.
Thanks for summing it up for us! Don't think this Masterclass is for me at the moment. My writing vibes are way too different from his LOL!
When it comes to finding an agent or write query letters, I highly recommend to you the Interview that Ellen Brock did on her channel with Literary Agent Lucinda Halpern!!!! She even talked about encouraging writers to use visuals in their query letters :D
Sending you much love and creative vibes
Thanks for the suggestion!!
Hi. My edito from Random House was lovely. Your editor is with you for all the edits and entire process. It us a relationship.
I like that :)
Hey Sara, love these long form videos and to hear your perspective. Keep up the great work!
As a side note; do you have a Patreon or place where we can support you elsewhere?
I have a ko-fi :)
thanks for the free masterclass sess 😮😅😎
on second thought...5:50 to 6:00 mark 😮
😅
Sarah, can you make a video comparing how rough your first draft of DE was in comparison to where it is now? I’m having trouble just getting my book drafted because I’m thinking ahead too much
I've thought about doing that! Maybe when I'm done with draft 6 (aka hopefully soon :) )
Hahaah damn it Sarah, like I’m not a writer, I’d call myself more of a general creative (painting mainly) but then I come back to your channel and now I want to write that damn novel again hahaha. It’s annoying. I won’t do it. But it says a lot about how inspiring you are! Maybe… maybe flash fiction or a short story would satisfy the urge. 🥴
❤️❤️❤️
I’m not so sure he was saying that self loathing is necessary. It felt more felt like he was saying you need a motivator, some way to keep you reminded of that fire. Something that’s going to act as an engine to get you to keep going. For him it’s the self loathing. Which is unhealthy but that keeps him there. For others it’s something else, but I think the point is that you have to have something that is bulletproof, in terms of keeping you honest, keeping you in that space, remembering WHY you’re doing this.
Like whenever I get way too in my head, and I get even the inkling of a thought the says “maybe you shouldn’t be doing this,” I start to feel viscerally uncomfortable. And I remember that the reason is because I need this more than almost anything. So I keep going. There is nothing more important than to finish my story. It’s my lifeblood. It’s my purpose (insofar as there is one). I have no choice, and so whenever something is keeping me from it, it is MISERY HOURS.
Skill is the product of hard work and countless repetition
extraordinary people do ordinary things for an extarordinary period of time
🙌
100% agree that self-loathing is not the answer. My jaw literally dropped lol
Same lol
👍🚴♂️❤️
:)
I don't believe this advice applies to someone trying to construct a fantasy world that is supposed to produce 10+ books. Despite this, I appreciate the straightforward advice. It is somewhat refreshing and helps me feel a sense of desperation. I acknowledge results, not belief.
That's because it's a masterclass on writing thrillers?
That was implied. @@stikfamaster2

I almost forgot about you!
Lol I'm working on committing to videos once a week instead of trying and failing to post twice
@@SaraLubratt lol, I moreso wasn't here for a while. I didn't know you started posting less.
If I listen to him, I would lost any interest in writing, my favorite hobby. "Only word count is important! It is a work!" Not for me. It is fun and hobby for me.
❤️❤️❤️
I obviously can't speak to his character in real life. Maybe he's a really nice guy. But this is giving me "gym-bro influencer" vibes. Like those guys who will lowkey shame you if you're not willing to get up at 4am to go to the gym every day because you're not "dedicated" enough
I agree with you, Sara. (Not a huge fan of hiking, but I would like to live close to a ski resort during the winter if I could get a second home, though!) 🩵❄️🏂
Question Sara, why have you rejected self publishing?
I haven’t. I just want to traditionally publish DE, I have other stories that I think self publishing would fit better
The mountains are a wonderful place to be!!
