I am that guy that loved to learn songs from everywhere and in different languages like, Hindi, Icelandic, Hungarian, Japanese, Chinese, German, and the Sami one happens to be this one, but it was some years ago and I still love it.
We listen on you in school cuz we learn about different people (Samer, native Americans, Aborigines.etc.etc) and that was amazing. Girl you have a amazing voice 😊
I'm part Sami too my great grandparents were immigrants from Finland, but they died long before i was born so i never knew them. I've been trying to learn more about the Sami culture today and their history so i can understand my heritage better.
Usually the Saamis back home would say, you either are a Saami or you're not, theres no being a part Saami. And that is only meant in a very deep , profund way, not in a nasty mean sort of way. :)
i am living in Brussel. i do not understand the lyrics, but this song is beautiful : with a lot of sun and energy. In 2011 i visit north Finland and Norway and i discovered the Sami cultur. respect for the Sami people.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Sami isn't Swedish but Sofia speaks Swedish perfectly, being a Swedish Sami woman from what I understand. Swedish has a lot of bouncyness, maybe it is from there.

I really do like this joik. It is airy and has kind of this feeling of wide open space of Lapland hills. Why I got intersted about this artist was because I saw her performance as a "Nåjd"in TV Film Midnightt sun. Her performance as "Noita" in my language Finnish really did warm up my heart and reminded me of my childhood experiences and some people in my family.

We are many but scattred and divided. The sad thing is that not many of us qualifies into Sametingets criterias of being sons or daughters of Sápmi. It's like we are outcast from politics from both Sverigedemokraterna and the Sametinget. I'm only 1/16 Sápmi but I still think it is a huge part of my heritage and I full out embraces it.

The last line mentions two male ancestors of Irene and Irene herself. It is a so called "yoik" with Irene as the subject. The lyrics is just hinting about the yoik's meaning.

Having some Sami blood myself, I have to admit that previously I did not particularly like the sound of the Sami language. Well, this gal certainly changed that! My daughter commented that it sounds Hawaiian. It's beautiful and inspired. Have a listen and enjoy.

What's in the description are the Sami bits that can be translated with some sense in English

Sofia is Swedish Sami. I am half Norwegian Sami, but sadly I never learned the language. I lived my life in the south of Norway far away from Sapmi. Finnish is a closely related language, but they are not immedialy mutually intelligible.
