I'm new to knowing about Sufjan's music and life, both artistically and personally. But I gotta say I heard this song for the 1st time tonight and I've had streams of warm tears flowing down my cheeks as I listened and contemplated the lyrics, colorful progressions & whispery tone of his voice. Finally, my eyes cleared up, but now after listening to "Mystery of Love' and "Visions of Gideon" concurrently I'm...well...here I go again...trying not to sob...though I'm 60 & live alone (with my tomcat, Noubie...typical...where is he when I need him!?)
"I will bow down (Dido’s lament)" If you don't know what Dido's Lament is, it's an opera aria from the opera "Dido and Aneus," also titled "When I am Laid in Earth." Jessye Norman's rendition of it is truly moving, and it makes this particular song beautiful an an entirely level of sadness.

I can't stop listening to the LP.. oh how I try but it just continues to draw me back in. One of the best albums I've heard in a long time. The ambient, floating sounds that ends tracks, 1,2,4,8 and 11 is a wonderful, relevant thread in the fabric of these beautiful songs.

This is the only song on the album that I really don't understand :(.. Can someone explain this one to me? Amazing album, never heard of this guy before but now I see that this was worth the shot..
My favourite album of 2015 so far. Only marginally better than Father John Misty's I Love You, Honeybear. But that's saying something, since they're both near-perfect albums.
Personally, I think there are plenty of artist who's albums are competing with this one including Kendrick Lamar, Björk, Courtney Barnett, Jamie xx, J Tillman, Vince Staples, Kamasi Washington, Young Fathers, Blur, Florence and the Machine, Death Grips, and FKA Twigs.

Carrie and Lowell
Such a long time ago
Like a dead horse
Meadowlark drive your arrow
Season of hope (after the flood)
Valentine, spurn my sorrow
Head on the floorboards (covered in blood)
Drunk as a horsefly
Climb on the mattress pad
Twist my arm
Under the pear tree
Shadows and light conspiring
Covered bridge, I scream
Cottage Grove shade invite me
I will bow down (Dido's lament)
Lord of the ancient waters
From the backyard (as far as she went)
Carrie surprised me
Erebus on my back
My lucky charm
Carried by stones
Fairyland all around us
Like a dead horse
Sign of your children's fever
Carrie, come home (Thorazine's friend)
Holding your hands with opal
Like a dead horse (shall we ascend)
Flight of the mayfly
Ephemera on my back
She breaks my arm
